Are you tired of being limited by your mobility issue?

Have you been looking for a robust, full-featured mobility aid to help you shatter those limitations and put them behind you once and for all?

If you answered yes to either of those questions, you’re going to love the products by Action Trackchair.

In fact, in our recent roundup review, two of the three products they offer won first and second place in the tracked wheelchair category.

In the sections that follow, we’ll show you exactly why these machines are a cut above and fill you in on the very few weaknesses and limitations they have.  Even if you ultimately decide these aren’t the machines you’ve been looking for, we think you’ll be impressed.  Let’s take a closer look at what Action Trackchair has to offer!

About the Action Trackchair Company

The Action Trackchair was first developed in 2008 by Tim Swenson, a motorsports shop business owner for 30 years. He wanted to create a chair for his paraplegic son that will allow him to enjoy outdoor activities like hunting, hiking, fishing, going to the beach, and much more.

Today, the Action Trackchair is patented for its design and functionality. It’s manufactured in their facility in Marshall, Minnesota, and is available in over 60 locations in the US and international dealers in Europe, Australia, Canada, and Japan.

Some of the authorized dealers you can find online are Carlson Mobility, Offroad Trackchair, TSS Equipment, All Out Access, and Midwest Trackchair. They offer the same Action Trackchairs, so it’s best to choose the dealer nearest you so you can get full service for your chair.

Note that there are a few other variants, but these are all minor variations on the theme and not separate models in the strictest sense of the term.  If you’re interested in buying one, it’s well worth diving in and seeing if one of the minor variants is a better fit.

For example, the Action Trackchair NT and Action Trackstander NR variants have a narrow total width of 29.5” so you can take it almost anywhere. But at the root, they are essentially the same as the three “main” models listed here.

Now, let’s take a closer look at these chairs.

Action Trackchairs In More Detail

Action Trackchair ST

Recommended for: Anyone who can afford it, except those who want the standing function, in which case, the Trackstander, or the Falcon variant are the ones you want.

This could rightly be considered the company’s baseline model.  It’s got slightly more configuration options than the Trackstander, but of course, the Trackstander can do a magic trick that the Trackchair cannot.

Here are the stats that define the model:

  • Seat Width:  Available in 16”, 18”, 20”, 22”, or 24” configurations
  • Seat to Floor Height: 23”
  • Total Chair Weight: 400 pounds
  • Max Supported Weight: 400 pounds
  • Max Supported Weight: 400 pounds
  • Ground clearance: 3.”
  • Turning Radius: 0”
  • Max Range: 10 miles
  • Seat Tilt (forward and backward) – max of twenty degrees in either direction.
Action Trackchair ST
Action Trackchair ST

The classic Trackchair distinguishes itself from the standing variants in two ways.  It offers more seat width options and has a broader tilt range.

A couple of things to note here:

  • First, the Trackchair’s top speed (and indeed, the top speed of the entire Action Trackchair lineup) is underwhelming.
  • Second, the maximum range isn’t all that impressive either.

While there’s nothing to be done about the top speed, you can work around the range issue by packing in a few solar panels with you when you take the chair on the road or into the wilds.  Even better, the model boasts an impressive amount of storage space, and you can also buy racks and other goodies as extras, which we’ll talk about a bit later on.

Those are about the only weak points in the model’s design.  You might think that the relatively low clearance would be an issue, and it is on non-tracked chairs, for sure.  Tracked chairs though, don’t have to worry as much about it.  They can chew through pretty much any terrain you put them on.

Recommended for: Anyone who has a mobility issue and wants standing functionality will love this chair, again, if you can afford it.

Check Latest Price

The Trackstander is functionally similar to the classic Trackchair, but due to engineering constraints, it’s not available in quite as many seat width options.  You’ll find that the stats closely mirror the Trackchair:

  • Seat Width:  Available in 18 or 20” configurations
  • Seat Depth: Available in 16” or 20” configurations
  • Seat to Floor Height: 23”
  • Fully adjustable knee supports
  • Total Chair Weight: 400 pounds
  • Max Supported Weight: 400 pounds
  • Top Speed – 3MPH
  • Ground Clearance: 3.”
  • Turning Radius: 0”
  • Max Range: 10 miles
  • Seat Tilt (forward and backward) – max of 5 degrees forward, and twenty degrees backward.

Rather than rehashing the notes on the stats that are similar, let’s focus on the differences.  There aren’t many, and with one exception, they’re subtle, but all are important.

First, note the presence of adjustable knee pads.  Second, the Trackstander gives up some tilt functionality.  It’s only capable of tilting five degrees forward, versus the twenty-degree forward tilt of the classic Trackchair.

The significant change though is the standing feature, and this is the reason that a potential buyer will opt for this model over its cheaper cousin.

There aren’t many chairs on the market today, tracked or otherwise, that offer standing functionality.  While not everyone will want or need this particular function, those who do are willing to pay a premium for it.

If you’ve got a severe mobility issue, you may have thought you’d never have the pleasure of standing up again.  The possibility may have been relegated to the back of your mind as an unrealized, unattainable dream.

Red Variants of Action Trackstander ST

The Trackstander can make that dream a reality, and it’s hard to put a price tag on that.

Action Trackstander Falcon

Action Trackstander Falcon
4.6

Recommended for: Wounded warriors or anyone who has a mobility issue and wants standing functionality. This is the company’s most expensive model.

Check Latest Price

The Trackstander Falcon is quite similar to the classic Trackstander wheelchair and has identical stats, but there are two critical differences.

First and foremost is the fact that it’s FDA-approved.  It’s hard to understate just how important that is because it has implications where insurance coverage is concerned.  If you’re going to get your insurance to help pay for the chair, then the model you’re considering needs to be FDA-approved.

Second, it’s the only tracked chair we know of that can move while in its standing configuration.  Not everyone will want or need this particular functionality, but if you do, then this is absolutely the model you want.

If you’re planning on footing the bill for the chair yourself, and you don’t need to move while in the standing position, save yourself a ton of money and get the classic Trackstander chair.

Adjustment Options

Action Trackchair products aren’t enormously adjustable, but they do have the basics covered.

The footrest is adjustable, and thanks to the seat tilt function (which is essentially a bi-directional recline feature), there are enough options that most users will be able to tweak the settings sufficiently to find their comfort sweet spot.

In addition to that, both armrests swivel up and down independently, which makes it easier to transfer into and out of the chair.

Comfort

The seat itself is well padded and quite comfortable, and in the next section, you’ll see that you can order a custom contoured seat, which will make your chair even more comfortable.  While you wouldn’t want to spend the whole night in the Action Track chair, a short nap is certainly not out of the question if you treat yourself to the headrest upgrade (see next section).

Extras Galore

One thing that the Action Trackchair does an amazing job at is offering a wide range of extras and customization options for their products.  This is something you almost never see even in established companies, which sometimes struggle to offer and properly support their main products.  They just don’t have the staff or resources to offer much in the way of extras.

Action Trackchair, however, takes an entirely different approach. You’ll be blown away by the extras on offer here. In fact, they offer a more robust set of extras than many national and global brands we’ve seen

Action Trackchair: Falcon Snow Plow
Action Trackchair: Falcon Led HeadLight
Action Trackchair: Falcon Tool Holder

Note that any of these add-ons can be applied to any of the chairs the company makes, giving you an unbelievable number of options to make your mobility aid truly unique and optimized for exactly how you plan to use it.

Here’s what you have to choose from:

  • A snow plow (note: this requires that you get the front wheel kit)
  • Utility box and brackets
  • Rear utility rack
  • Front wheel kit
  • Rifle rest
  • Upgrade to four-point harness
  • Goal post joystick upgrade
  • 20-amp battery charger upgrade
  • Attendant controls
  • Flip-up footrest
  • Transfer/Backpack Handle
  • Oxygen tank holder
  • 9” seatbelt extension
  • 4” offset/extension plate
  • Cup holder
  • Cover with carrying bag
  • Headrest
  • Tool holder
  • Zinc primer coat
  • Custom contoured seating upgrade
  • Toggle switch box
  • Fishing rod holder
  • Armrest bags with pockets
  • Lateral side supports
  • Lateral leg supports
  • Specialized Trackchair/Trackstander Lift/Carrier
  • LED Headlight
  • Hi/Low gun rack
  • Umbrella holder
  • Rear utility rack
  • Utility tray (with brackets)
  • Type I or Type II tracks
  • And a gun scabbard

Some of these upgrades are about what you would expect, but some of them are truly next level.  A tracked wheelchair with a snow plow?  Come on!  You just can’t get that anywhere else.

If you want to use your chair primarily for leisure activities, you can do that.  If you’re an outdoorsman and want to roll off the trail and venture into the country’s wild, untamed places, you can do that, too.  If you’re looking for a machine you can use to do productive work, the Action Trackchair has you covered.

Action Trackchair: Falcon Type I or Type II Tracks
Action Trackchair: Falcon Gun Scabbard
Action Trackchair: Falcon Oxygen Tank Holder

Best of all, you don’t have to stop at just one “set” of extras, which would limit how you can use the chair.  Buy a few to get you started, and then add more as the mood strikes, or as funds become available.  Whichever of the Trackchairs you buy, it can grow with you as your needs and desires change over time.

As impressive as that collection of extras is, that’s not the end of the matter.  Action Trackchair also gives you a surprising number of color options, both of the machine itself, and of the seat.  Here are your options on those two fronts:

Seat Color Options

  • Black
  • Camo
  • Digital Camo
  • Contoured black camo
  • Contoured black digital camo
  • Contoured all black

Paint Color Options

  • Black with red splash
  • Black with white splash
  • Digital Camo
  • Desert Tan
  • Glossy black
  • Hot lime green
  • Hot lime green with white splash
  • Neon pink
  • Camo
  • Orange

  • Red with white splash
  • Super blue

  • Yellow
  • Patriot blue

Not A Portable Machine

No track chair in existence can claim to be portable, and the products offered by Action Trackchair are no exception.

The company has an answer for that, however.  In the section on extras, one of the things we mentioned was a specialized lift/carrier.

While it’s certainly true that you could buy or use a pull-behind trailer you’ve already got, the one offered by the manufacturer is specifically designed to match the dimensions of your Trackchair and is ideally suited to carrying the load.  Note that you can also buy an all-weather cover for your Trackchair to help protect it from the elements while in transport and any time it’s not in use.

Action Trackchair: Falcon Carrier

If you don’t want to buy the specialized lift, your other options for moving your chair from one place to another include:

  • A full-sized van with a ramp
  • A pickup truck with a ramp
  • And in some cases, a standard lift may work.  Here though, you’ll want to take careful measurements to be sure the lift you select will fit your machine.

Easy to Drive and Fun to Use

The control system on all three Trackchair models is well designed and intuitive.  You’ll master the basic functionality of your chair in a matter of minutes but be advised:  If you’ve never used a tracked wheelchair before, it will take some getting used to.

Action Trackchair: Falcon Joystic

Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to traverse even the most challenging terrains with ease, but we’d recommend starting slow.  Begin by practicing on flat, open ground, preferably an open field and not in your backyard.

Tracked chairs, after all, are a bit like miniature tanks.  If you lose control or forget how to turn when you’re first starting out, you’ll wind up flattening your lawn furniture, knocking things over, and causing general destruction.

That period will be short-lived, but it’s something to be mindful of.

Pros & Cons of the Action Trackchair

By any reckoning, even the base models of the Action Trackchair are exceptional machines.  When you factor in the impressive collection of extras you can add to customize and personalize your machine, it’s hard not to fall in love with the entire line.

An Image of Action Trackchair Reviews: Brand Logo

The only real weakness in the line other than price is the fact that all three chairs have a positively anemic top speed (just 3 MPH).  If you’re in a hurry to get somewhere, these aren’t the chairs for you.

Where price is concerned, that’s no great surprise.  You’re going to pay a premium for this kind of quality, longevity, durability, and flexibility.

The only other potential issue we’d bring to your attention is related to price but in a slightly different manner.  Given the cost of the base models, we would love to have seen at least a few of the “extras” included at no charge.

We can see the other side too, though.  There’s no need to pay for functionality you don’t need, so allowing customers to pick and choose exactly which options and extras they want has its advantages.  Given that, this point may not be a negative in your eyes at all.

Final Thoughts on Action Track Chair Reviews

It’s quite a feat for a single company to capture both the #1 and #2 spots in a given product category, but Action Trackchair has managed to do exactly that.  These are fantastic products, and we highly recommend the entire line, but with a few provisos:

  • There’s no practical way that these machines could be used indoors.  You’ll need to have the funds available to buy both a Trackchair and something for indoor use.
  • Transport will be something of a challenge, so you’ll also need to invest in appropriate infrastructure to get your chair wherever you want to go.  These costs are, of course, in addition to the already hefty price tag of the device itself.
  • Potential buyers should spend some time thinking about exactly how they plan to use the machine before committing to the purchase.

That last point is particularly important because there’s little point in paying for capability you don’t need.  Why spend thousands of dollars on a machine like these if you’re only planning to use a fraction of its capability?  In that case, you’d be much better off by spending less and getting a machine designed for casual or moderate use.

Ultimately then, it comes down to two things:  Resources and planned use.  If you’ve got the money, and plan on using the chair to something close to its full potential, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better product on the market today.

We have 2 , one a stander and the other one not. We put them in to many situations and usages outdoors. Fishing, hunting and target shooting for quads and paras. One issue is clearance. Could that be increased by 4-6 inches?

    1. Chair Institute says:

Hi Kenneth and thank you for writing in!

It’s a great question and it’s always awesome to get a
comment like this from someone who is using the chair on a regular basis and in the field. Your insights
      are invaluable!

While there’s a lot of room for modification when you’re placing your order for one of these, to our
knowledge, providing more ground clearance isn’t something the company does, but you’re absolutely
correct that the low clearance is something of a design limitation.

We encourage you to contact Action Trackchair with your question and see what they have to say.

If you’re looking for some assistance with raising your two-track chairs now, post-purchase, we did find
someone with the expertise to help with that: Lance Greathouse.

Lance runs a non-profit called “Wheelchair Labs” whose mission is to refurbish donated wheelchairs and
give them to people who can’t afford them. He’s an engineer, and when he’s not doing that, he’s busy
customizing wheelchairs in all sorts of ways.

He’s even made a wheelchair from the seat of a fighter plane and managed to mount a flame thrower
on a different chair – if anybody could give you some insights on how to increase the clearance on your
current chairs, Lance is the guy.
