Unfortunately, the phrase “high weight capacity” is too vague to be helpful. Given that most furniture on the market today supports around 300 pounds, we arbitrarily decided that even to be considered for inclusion here, the furniture in question needed to support at least 400 pounds of user weight.

Naturally, the more weight a given piece of furniture supports, the better, but 400 pounds was our minimum standard.

Beyond that, we were looking for comprehensive furniture sets that provided buyers with an all-in-one solution for outdoor entertaining. We think that most people looking for a set of furniture probably don’t have much right now and are not interested in trying to cobble something together piecemeal.

We were also looking for quality furniture offered at a reasonable price. The value proposition matters!

These things gave us a roadmap—a means to evaluate our finalists logically, which ultimately revealed our top pick.

Of course, we readily admit that any analysis like this is subject to subjectivity. You may look at the same information and reach a different conclusion. We understand that, so we wanted to provide full details on all the products selected for the final cut.

Our top pick is offered by RST Brands, which isn’t exactly an industry Titan but is a well-respected company that takes customer service seriously. This is a great set, but it does come with one significant potential drawback, which we’ll get to in a moment.

The first thing to say about this Deco set is that it’s huge. It comprises eight pieces, including an outdoor sofa in two sections, a pair of club chairs, a pair of Ottomans, a small side table, and a coffee table—everything you need to start entertaining in your outdoor spaces. We want to note that RST Brands’ Deco Collection also offers a six-piece set.

Before we say more than that, let’s take a moment to review each piece by the numbers:

These are fantastic numbers across the board. They all work exceptionally well together. The seat height is superb, comfortably inside the big and tall range, which typically starts at 18” and goes to 22” or higher.

The seat width is excellent. Even if you are close to the chair’s maximum supported weight limit, you should have no trouble fitting comfortably in the seat. The rest of the numbers paint every piece in the set as designed for bigger, taller, and heavier users.

The side table is a bit small, but it’s still big enough to be useful. The coffee table is quite good, though we’d love to get the company to add a small storage shelf under the tabletop.

The furniture sports a tubed aluminum frame, powder-coated to help it withstand the elements, and wrapped in rattan-stained shades of grey, giving it a complex, appealing look. Even better, if you want a set, you can order the cushions in a modest selection of neutral and bold colors.

This is fantastic, as it gives you a surprising number of options for establishing your outdoor aesthetic, and that’s what this set is all about. Unless you have tons of space, this is a set of furniture you buy if you don’t yet have any and are looking to meet most, if not all, of your outdoor furniture needs in one shot.

On the comfort front, RST sticks to the basics, using conventional block foam padding with hardy, weather-resistant, quick-drying material stretched over it.

There’s nothing wrong with using block foam as padding. It is the industry standard used as padding in most furniture sold today, and even better, it’s present in generous amounts here.

Many outdoor furniture sets are designed as occasional seating. They’re fine for sitting for a couple of hours at a stretch. Still, a lot of the furniture made for outdoor use isn’t optimized for lounging for extended periods. This set is. You could spend an entire afternoon in comfort and style on this set.

Another thing we like about the set is that it includes throw pillows in whatever accent color you select. We love the extras and attention to detail here.

Earlier, we mentioned one major problem with this set, which we must mention before we close out this mini-review: It’s expensive. Seriously expensive. It will give you a bit of sticker shock, and its hefty price tag may put it out of the reach of some prospective buyers.

Still, this is a case of getting what you pay for. It’s top-quality furniture that will provide you with years of reliable service if you properly maintain it.

The only other minor complaint we have is that it’s rattan. If you like rattan, that won’t be an issue for you at all. It’s not our first choice as outdoor furniture materials go, but despite that fact, this set won us over. Still, if you’re not a fan, that fact, combined with the hefty price tag, may make it a deal-breaker for you.

Our second-place winner in our roundup review of the best high-weight capacity patio sets is a close cousin to our top pick, consisting of only six pieces of furniture rather than the eight offered by our overall winner. This Cannes set includes a loveseat, a pair of club chairs, an Ottoman, a small side table, and a coffee table. The loveseat isn’t as big as the full-sized sofa offered by the larger set, but that’s not a bad thing, especially if you’re a little cramped for space.

As we did with this set’s big brother, before we go further, let’s take a moment to do a quick stats review and look at each piece by the numbers:

This set shares many similarities with our top pick, including that these numbers are good across the board. The seat height is identical to that offered by the eight-piece set. The width is sufficient; even if you weigh something close to the chair’s maximum supported weight limit, you won’t have trouble fitting comfortably into the seat.

The loveseat is understandably smaller than the sofa and supports slightly less weight. Even so, if you’re on the heavy side, it’s robust enough to sit comfortably and have someone else sit beside you with little to no difficulty.

The loss of one color option isn’t the end of the world. Still, it does reduce the flexibility of the set in terms of blending it in with your existing outdoor décor scheme or in defining one if you don’t yet have any outdoor furniture and are using this set to jumpstart your collection.

Note, too, that there’s enough furniture here that unless you’ve got tons of outdoor space to work with, you could easily use this as an all-in-one solution. It contains all the basics to start entertaining on your deck, porch, or patio from the moment you get it all together.

That, of course, brings us to the matter of assembly. Here, we find more similarities between our top pick and this set. Each piece of furniture is packed in its box, and each piece comes partially assembled, which speeds the process along considerably.

Also, there’s no expert assembly option here. If you buy this set, you’ll have to put it together yourself, preferably with the help of a friend.

Since each piece is packaged separately, we recommend opening one box at a time, finishing it inside, and moving on to the next box. That way, you don’t risk getting pieces from different furniture components mixed up, which will complicate the process needlessly and frustrate your efforts.

Expect to spend the better half of an afternoon preparing everything for first use. That’s not because of low production quality or unclear instructions; it’s simply that there’s quite a lot of furniture to contend with, so it will take time.

Like our top two picks in our roundup review of the best high-weight capacity patio furniture sets, this set is offered by a medium-sized, well-respected company with a reputation for quality products and good customer service and support. If you’re interested in acquiring this set, you can buy with confidence, knowing that if there’s a problem, you’ll be well taken care of.

Before we say more, let’s continue as we have been by looking at the core stats of each piece in the set, which includes a pair of loveseats, four Ottomans, and a round coffee table. Here are the basics of each piece:

These are generally good numbers, but we were disappointed at how low to the ground this set is. Considering that the big and tall seat height range starts at 18” and goes up from there, this set misses that mark by a significant margin. In our view, this set is the best value on the market today. Tangkula is a great company, and they’re practically giving this set away. There’s an important difference between this set of furniture and the ones we’ve discussed thus far.

Where the sets we’ve talked about so far are designed for general outdoor entertaining, this is strictly a small dining set. As such, it’s somewhat less versatile than the others. Even so, it represents a tremendous value for the money and is worth taking a closer look at. Let’s start by examining the core stats by the numbers:

There are a few things to note here. First and foremost, this set is substantially smaller than the others we’ve looked at. Even if you’re a little short on space, you shouldn’t have any particular difficulty finding a permanent home for it.

Second, the seat dimensions are pretty solid. 18” is right on the edge of the big and tall range. The seats are wide and deep enough that even if you’re near the top end of the chair’s maximum supported weight, you won’t have a problem fitting comfortably into it.

The table is certainly large enough to enjoy a meal at, but it’s not large enough for four people to eat and keep all the food served on it. You’ll either need to invest in a side table or keep the food you’re serving indoors. Everybody will go inside to fill their plates and bring them outside.

Moving beyond the story that the numbers alone tell, this is rattan furniture, and not everybody is a fan of that material. If you’re not, then this probably isn’t the set you’re looking for. We’re not huge fans of rattan furniture, but this set won us over. It’s good-looking, well-built furniture, big enough to be useful and small enough to fit just about anywhere. We like that very much.

The other sets we’ve discussed in our roundup review of the best outdoor furniture sets for heavy weights have sported generous padding, making them ideal for lounging for extended periods. That’s decidedly not the case here.

This furniture is much more modestly padded. It’s fine for sitting for short periods, but this is not the kind of furniture you want to spend the better part of a day lounging in.

This is occasional seating. As long as it’s used as such, you’ll be quite happy with it. Just don’t buy it thinking that you’re getting lounging furniture. You’re not.

Note, too, that there are no color options here. You get a set of black rattan furniture with cream-colored seat pads. That’s fine. The colors are neutral, which makes it easy for this set to blend in seamlessly with any other outdoor furniture you may have. If this is the first outdoor furniture you invest in, adding other components later is easy.

The tabletop is the real talking point here. It’s white-tempered glass, and it’s gorgeous. It looks like it’s covered in frost, making it an instant conversation starter.

As with most of the furniture sold today, if you order a set of this, it will arrive at your door in a large box and unassembled. The good news is that Tangkula is an excellent company, and the production quality of its products is exceptional.

Highwood 5-Piece Hamilton Outdoor Dining Set

Highwood rounds out our list of the best patio furniture sets for heavyweights. You’re already familiar with the Highwood brand if you’ve read some of our other outdoor furniture roundup reviews. They’re still not what we’d describe as an industry Titan, but they are larger and better-known than the other brands we’ve talked about thus far.

Highwood’s furniture tends to be more expensive than average, but it offers exceptional quality products. Its products, including this set, are backed by an impressive 12-year warranty.

Like the Tangkula set we just talked about, this furniture set is a bit more narrowly targeted than our top picks as it’s dining furniture. If you plan on having a lot of picnics on your porch, deck, or patio and are looking for something different from the standard picnic table, this is an excellent option.

Let’s start by doing a quick stats review and looking at each piece by the numbers:

These are excellent numbers, and note that the chairs offered here have a higher supported weight limit than any other chair in this review. Sure, the loveseats and sofas provide more support, but no other chair in this review can match the ones offered here.

We also love that you can order your set at your height. If you select the higher table, the chairs you get with it are also correspondingly higher.

Moving beyond what the numbers alone can tell us, note that the chairs offered with this set are Adirondack style. That’s significant because most Adirondack chairs sit very low to the ground, making them unsuitable for many potential buyers, especially those with mobility issues. Since they sit so low, they can be difficult to get into and out of.

These chairs are the exception to that rule. They give you the best of both worlds. Adirondack styling, but high enough that everybody can use and enjoy them. We love that!

The only real potential problem with the numbers above is the fact that the seat width is a bit on the modest side. If you weigh anywhere close to the chair’s 500-pound weight limit, you’ll want to take a quick measurement to be sure you’ll be able to fit comfortably into one of these.

It’s also worth mentioning that this set is proudly made in the USA. Unlike every other set we’ve discussed, it doesn’t use rattan. This furniture is made of an eco-friendly composite material that stands up exceptionally well to the elements without fading or chipping.

Ovios dominates the bottom half, while RST dominates the top half, and their six-piece rattan furniture set is a very good value for the money. You get a lot of furniture for a song, so if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to jumpstart your outdoor furniture collection, this is a great way to do it.

These are categorically good numbers that all work very well in tandem and paint a picture of a custom-made furniture set for bigger, taller, and heavier people.

The coffee table is an especially good addition here. Not only is the tabletop Polywood an incredibly durable composite material that looks great and will undoubtedly outlast the rest of the furniture, but the table also comes with a handy storage shelf beneath it, which adds considerably to its versatility.

Unlike our top picks, which use tubed aluminum, this set boasts a galvanized steel base wrapped in rattan. Unfortunately, Ovios doesn’t offer any color options for this set. The rattan is stained an attractive grey color that closely resembles the color used on the sets offered by RST, and the padding is a medium blue polyester filament-based fabric that is weather-resistant and quick-drying.

If you like blue, you’re lucky. This set should be on our shortlist of options to consider, as it’s only a fraction of the cost of the set offered by RST and offers nearly as much furniture as our top pick.

Comfort-wise, Ovios uses block foam padding, just like our higher-ranked options. The seat and seatback pads are nearly but not quite four inches thick, so they provide a comfortable seating experience even if you spend several hours at a stretch lounging in the chair.

Unfortunately, the quality of every component on this furniture is somewhat lower than what you’ll find on our top picks. It’s not a glaring difference, but it will be telling over time. This furniture looks great. It will serve you well if you use it as occasional seating and keep up with the maintenance. But, it will show its age more quickly than the expensive furniture.

That’s a pretty standard trade-off. You get about the same amount of furniture, but the padding will start breaking down more quickly, and the finish on the rattan will start peeling and cracking after a couple of years of exposure to the elements.

Ovios does try to help you protect your investment, though, offering a free furniture cover big enough to cover the entire set when it’s not in use. They also offer throw pillows to add color and flair to the sofa, but they aren’t particularly well-padded. They’ll work in a pinch, but you’ll probably be happier with accent pillows you select yourself.

The packing and assembly process reveals the real gotcha and the biggest difference between this set and the more expensive ones. Unlike the more expensive sets, if you buy one of these, it will arrive at your door in two giant boxes.

Six pieces of furniture, two boxes. If there’s a silver lining, the pieces that make up each component are wrapped individually. As long as you don’t unwrap everything all at once, you’ll be able to keep everything organized and not get your pieces mixed up.

While that won’t get you unless you take everything out simultaneously, the production quality will trip you up in places. It’s good and certainly a cut above what you typically see in furniture imported from China, but it’s not world-class, so you’ll inevitably run into a few situations where the pieces don’t fit together quite as they should.

In addition, the assembly instructions are decent but sometimes a bit cryptic, further complicating the issue.

Put all that together, and you’re faced with a pretty daunting assembly process that will tie up a significant portion of your day. It’s not insurmountable, but it will be a challenge. The good news is that once it’s done, it’s done, and as long as you take the time to cover it when it’s not in use and don’t use it heavily, it will serve you pretty well.

We like this set very much but don’t quite love it. Even so, for the right user and as long as you’re mindful of its limitations, it offers much value for the money and is a great, relatively inexpensive way to jumpstart your outdoor furniture collection. It gives you all the furniture you need to start entertaining in the outdoor spaces on your property. We recommend it.

Ovios 4 Piece Rattan Patio Set

This set is the little brother to the Ovios six-piece rattan furniture set we discussed. While it doesn’t pack as much value as the company’s larger set, it still has much to offer and includes a loveseat, a pair of matching chairs, and a coffee table. Let’s start by doing as we’ve done in the past and taking a look at the numbers that define each piece:

As with the numbers defining Ovios’ larger set, these are good numbers. Even if you’re near the top end of the chair’s maximum supported weight limit, you won’t have any problems fitting comfortably into the chair.

The loveseat doesn’t support as much total weight as the sofa offered by Ovios’ six-piece set, but this is hardly a surprise. The coffee table offered here is identical to the excellent coffee table offered in the larger set.

The padding is identical, too, but since this set doesn’t include matching Ottomans, we didn’t rate it quite as high for comfort.

While the six-piece set does not offer color options, you have two options here. You can pick either grey rattan with blue cushions or brown rattan with beige cushions. Although the brown and beige cushions are more challenging to keep clean, we prefer that option. But here, the right answer is whichever works best for you!

Another similarity between this set and its big brother is the assembly process, which suffers from the same challenges buyers of the larger set will face. The process won’t take as long since there are two fewer pieces of furniture. Be warned that given the challenges you’re likely to face putting the set together, it will still take up a big chunk of your afternoon.

While the furniture offered in this set differs slightly, each piece suffers from the same basic weaknesses we discussed when discussing the six-piece set. It’s good furniture, but it’s made from relatively lower-quality components that will show their age sooner than the more expensive options we’ve discussed thus far.

Again, Ovios does take steps to help you protect your investment. They offer a free furniture cover that is big enough to cover the entire set and two free-throw pillows to liven up the loveseat.

Here’s the thing with this set, though: Since it’s just four pieces, it isn’t quite big enough to be considered an all-in-one outdoor entertaining solution. It’s a good start, but you’ll probably want to add additional pieces later unless you plan to entertain just a handful of guests. Even so, it’s better than average, and it’s well-priced. We provisionally recommend it.

Best Choice Products 4 Piece Patio Furniture Set

Most of the products we’ve discussed to this point are rattan. Highwood’s offering was a marked departure, made of eco-friendly composite material, and this offering by Best Products is yet another departure from what has become the norm in this roundup review. This set is made of hardwood—acacia, specifically—and gorgeous.

Best Products is a tiny brand that most people have never heard of. They import their products from China for resale here. The good thing is that Chinese labor costs are incredibly low, and the company passes the savings onto you.

On the other hand, the production quality of products from China is somewhat lower than those made in the West, so there’s a definite trade-off at work here. It’s a good trade-off for most people, especially those on a budget, giving you more furniture for the money spent.

In the case of the four-piece set offered here, the production quality is a cut above what you typically see from imported furniture, which makes it well worth a look. The set includes two loveseats, a corner piece to tie them together, and a coffee table. We’ll do as we’ve been doing and start by taking a closer look at each piece in the set by the numbers:

Most of these numbers are good. We love the maximum supported weight limit and note that the L-shaped sofa comprises three of the four pieces, giving it a total supported weight of 1650 pounds. This is a sturdy piece of furniture!

The only potential weak spot in the numbers is the seat height, which is quite low at just 14.5.” If you’re taller, this set may not be a good fit for you, especially if you suffer from some mobility issues.

On the other hand, while getting in and out of the sofa can be a bit of a challenge, you’ll find it quite comfortable once you’re seated.

The acacia wood is stained a deep, rich brown, and the sofa sports plenty of block foam padding to provide comfort. As we’ve mentioned, block foam padding is the industry standard, so there’s nothing wrong with it. Also, since each piece in the set was designed to support 550 pounds of user weight, there’s quite a lot of it, which makes this an excellent piece for lounging for extended periods.

The cushions are covered with a durable, weather-resistant polyester filament-based fabric that’s quick-drying and stands up well to the elements. The only potential issue is that there are no color options here.

They’re cream-colored, and they look great, but remember, this furniture was designed for use on your porch, deck, or patio; the one thing you’ll find plenty of outside is dirt, which means that keeping those pretty cream-colored seat pads clean is going to be a constant battle.

Unfortunately, the seat pad covers aren’t machine washable either, so you’ll have to clean them by hand with a damp cloth and a mild detergent to keep them looking new. Also, unlike Ovios, Best Products doesn’t offer a furniture cover you can place over the set when it’s not in use. That’s certainly not the end of the world, but it is something to bear in mind.

One thing we haven’t talked about to this point is the coffee table that’s included in the set. It’s attractive and functional but has a very basic design. There’s no storage shelf under the tabletop, but solid acacia wood is big enough to be genuinely useful.

It probably won’t come as a great surprise that if you buy this set, it will arrive at your door unassembled, so you’ll have some work to do before you can start enjoying it.
