We’ve scoured the internet to find the best recliners for sleeping on the market today. During our search, we realized that it was impractical to consider all recliners in a single category, so we divided them into two groups: lift chairs and recliners, which include manual, powered, and recliner-rockers.
We identified a short list of the best loungers in each class and evaluated them against each other, ultimately declaring two winners. We’ll tell you all about the winning chairs just below, and if you disagree with our top picks, we’ll provide full details on all of our finalists. Before we do that, let’s start by taking a high-level look at the chairs that made our short list in each category.
Because there are more standard recliners on the market today than lift chairs, we ended up with a list of regular recliners and another list of lift chair finalists. Before we proceed, let’s introduce them.
Best Recliners for Sleeping in 2025
Best Lift Recliner Chairs for Sleeping
Do you suffer from a mobility issue that makes it exceedingly difficult to get into and out of bed? Are you recovering from a recent surgery? Do you have a medical condition like sleep apnea? Are you a new or expectant mother?
These are just a few reasons why sleeping in your bed might be impractical, if not impossible. Whatever your reasons for wanting a sleeper recliner, this roundup review was written with you in mind.
But before we discuss the details of our top picks and selection criteria, we should explain why we divided this roundup into two lists: lift recliners and Non-Lift Recliners.
Lift vs Non-Lift Sleeper
While both recliners offer excellent sleeper options, they generally target two different market segments.
Lift chairs tend to be much more highly sought after by people who suffer from some type of mobility issue, where the lift mechanism provides a bit of mechanical assistance that helps get the user back on his or her feet again after spending time in the chair.
People with mobility issues may find it extremely difficult or problematic to get into and out of bed, prompting them to seek a chair that provides both a reliable lift function and a good sleeping platform.
Non-lifting recliners, by contrast, are appealing to a much broader cross-section of the market. Some users will be interested in a recliner that pulls double duty as a sleeper simply because they want a big, comfy chair to nap and hang out in.
New or expectant mothers might want a rocking recliner for the nursery. Sleep apnea sufferers might be very interested in a sleeper recliner but do not need a chair with a lift function, and so on.
Answering the lift/no-lift question is the first, most fundamental question. After that, it comes down to a few very specific features.
Selection Criteria
Zeroing in on the best recliners for sleeping was no easy task, but as we dove into the depths of the research, some common threads began emerging. In our view, here are the key elements of a great sleeper recliner:
These were the key factors we zeroed in on when evaluating our finalists. Different people will place different levels of importance on these factors, which is why, by the time you reach the end of this roundup review, your top pick may differ from ours.
That’s okay; that’s exactly why we published details about our overall winners and the chairs on our list of finalists!

Our Verdict:
This chair is amazing. Provided the weight limit isn’t an issue for you, we highly recommend it.
|
Our Verdict:
Although the Catnapper Owens is a slightly better chair, this one is accessible to a broader swath of the market. Highly recommended.
|
Our Verdict:
An excellent alternative to the Osborne if that model doesn’t work for you for some reason. Highly recommended.
|

- Infinite recline positions available. Comfort system comparable to the Osborn, featuring a mix of poly fiberfill, high-density block foam, and support springs. Wider than your typical recliner. Arrives at your door fully assembled. Supports a generous amount of user weight.
- No Wall Hugging Technology. Does not lay flat.
Our Pick: Catnapper Owens Power Lay Flat Recliner
Catnapper is one of the most well-respected brands in the American furniture industry today, so it’s no surprise that it won top honors here. The Owens Lay Flat recliner is a masterpiece of design and a great-looking chair to boot, but it’s not without limitations.
Chair Specifications
Before we get into the specifics, let’s start with the basic statistics that define the model:
As you can see, this is a sizeable piece of furniture. It doesn’t incorporate Wall Hugger technology into its design, so you’ll need a lot of space to use it, which could be problematic if you have a smaller home or apartment.
These stats also highlight the chair’s one significant shortcoming. It only supports a modest amount of user weight so that it won’t be useful for a significant minority of the market.
Power Recline Function
Having said that, you might be wondering how and why this chair managed to snag top honors. That comes down to the fact that this chair is an absolute masterpiece in every other respect. As a power recliner, it gives you unlimited recline angles.
Adjustable Headrest
That’s not uncommon for power recliners, but the Owens take things one step further. The headrest is independently adjustable and offers an unlimited number of adjustment options. That’s huge, and it’s the only chair we’ve seen on the market today that offers that feature. We love it, and we think you will, too!
Lay Flat
Even better, the Owens lays flat when fully reclined, making it a perfect sleeper.
No Memory Function
The only thing we wish is that, especially given the ability to adjust the chair itself and the headrest to infinite positions, we wish the company had included a memory function allowing you to save your favorite settings and recall them again with one-touch convenience.
That feature exists on a few massage chairs, so we know it’s within the realm of possibility and, in our view, would be a great addition to a future model upgrade.
Comfort System
In terms of comfort, the Owens doesn’t disappoint either. It offers a fairly advanced comfort system comprised of high-density block foam and poly fiberfill, supported by an array of individually wrapped, gel-infused comfort coils, just like you see on some models of high-quality mattresses sold today.
It’s not quite as comfortable as memory foam, but it comes pretty close, and it provides a wonderful level of comfort, whether you’re lounging or sleeping in a chair.
Lumbar Support
On top of that, when sitting up, you’ll get the advantage of the chair’s well-implemented lumbar support! While ergonomic features are quite common in the world of office furniture, there aren’t many recliners that offer them. We were thrilled to see the Catnapper Owens break from the pack in this regard!
Extras
Although this chair doesn’t come with a side storage pocket, it does feature a handy USB port so you can keep your favorite device fully charged while you’re spending time in the chair.
Easy Assembly
As with most chairs in this category, it doesn’t arrive at your door fully assembled, but the process is quick and easy. If you’d rather not be bothered, White Glove service is available, making getting the chair ready for first use hassle-free.
Our Verdict
In other words, the Catnapper Owens does just about everything, including several surprise features that add tremendous value to the chair. If you weigh 250 pounds or less, this chair should be the standard by which all your other options are measured. It’s one of the best premium sleeper recliners on the market today. It is highly recommended.
Runner-Up: Simmons Osborn Rocker and Recliner
Recommended For: Anyone weighing 400 pounds or less, who has enough space for it.
Simmons is the oldest furniture company on our list of finalists. Although they didn’t claim top honors in this category, they secured the #2 and #3 slots, which is no small feat! Let’s start our review of the Simmons Osborn by closely examining the stats that define the model.
Chair Specifications
As you can see, this is a mammoth chair capable of supporting a generous amount of user weight. While we love the size, the simple truth is that it might be too big for some homes.
Wall Hugging
If you’re short on space, this chair will be a non-starter. That said, it incorporates wall-hugging technology into its design, so you’ll only need about 6” of space between the back of the chair and whatever wall you put it near.
Power vs Manual Configuration
Assuming space isn’t an issue, the Osborn rocker would make a fantastic addition to any home. First and foremost, its powerful, quiet motor lets it pull double duty as both a rocker and a power recliner with unlimited recline positions.
Note that you can, if you prefer, order a manual variant of the Osborn. If you do, you’ll lose out on some of the flexibility. You’ll get a standard three-position recliner instead of infinite recline positions.
No Lay Flat Position
Also, note that the Osborn doesn’t lay completely flat, whichever variant you choose. That’s not necessarily a deal-breaker because if you have trouble getting a decent night’s sleep in your bed, the odds are that you won’t want to lay perfectly flat in your recliner anyway. Even if that’s not the case, this chair lays close enough to flat that you’ll get a good night’s sleep.
Wide Seat
Take another look at those basic stats. The seat width is incredible—it’s almost as wide as a loveseat! It’s so wide that you’re not likely to be able to comfortably use both armrests simultaneously. The tradeoff is that the extra room will make the experience much more comfortable when you recline back to sleep.
Comfort
Where comfort is concerned, the Osborn features a mix of high-density block foam, poly fiberfill, and an array of individually wrapped comfort coil springs, just like you find on high-quality mattresses.
It’s not quite as comfortable as memory foam, but the experience is delightful regardless of what you use the chair for. You’ll be able to spend several hours daily in it without discomfort.
Assembly
One thing we love about Simmons chairs is that they arrive fully assembled no matter what you buy from them. That’s fantastic in most cases but look again at the stats of this model. The Osborn will not fit through a standard door. The back must come off to get it inside and where you want it.
Fortunately, that’s easy to do, but given the size of the chair, we recommend having a trusty assistant on standby when the chair arrives to make the job easier. Unfortunately, White Glove service is not available for this model.
Our Verdict
We love almost everything about this chair. It’s big, it’s comfortable, and it’s useful for a variety of purposes. The Osborn is an excellent choice whether you’re looking for a comfortable nursery chair, something to recover from surgery, or a new living room chair for lounging around in. It’s well-deserving of the second-place spot on our list and one of the best recliner chairs to sleep in on the market today.
Value Pick: Simmons Cuddler
Recommended For: Anyone. This is a great chair for couples who want to cuddle, or bigger, taller folks. An excellent sleeper recliner!
If the Simmons Osborn isn’t a good fit for you, whatever the reason, then the Simmons Cuddler might be a better fit. Like its cousin, the Osborn, this is a big piece of furniture, and unfortunately, it doesn’t have the benefit of Wall Hugger technology, so you’ll need even more space to use this one effectively. Check out the basic stats for this chair.
Chair Specifications
Although somewhat lighter than the Osborn, it supports the same user weight. It’s bigger overall, but the seat width isn’t nearly as wide. Even so, it’s exceptionally roomy, which makes it a great lounging, napping, or sleeping chair. You could even fit two smaller people in it if they snuggled close, thus the model’s name.
Recline Function
As a power recliner, this model offers infinite recline positions. Although it doesn’t lay completely flat, it does come close enough that you’ll have no difficulty finding a comfortable position to sleep through the night.
Comfort
The Cuddler is exceptionally well-padded, featuring a combination of high-density block foam, poly fiberfill, and a network of support springs. Releasing in this chair is very similar to relaxing on a good-quality mattress. Add a blanket, and you’re ready for a delightful night’s sleep!
Assembly
It’s also proudly made in the US of A, and if you decide to order one, it will arrive at your door fully assembled and ready for its first use.
We love that, but there’s a catch—the same catch we mentioned when discussing the Osborn. Check out those dimensions again. There’s no way this chair will fit through your front door fully assembled. You’ll have to take the back off to get it inside the house and into whatever room you want to place it in.
The good news is that this chair is somewhat lighter than the Osborn. Even so, since White Glove Service is unavailable, you’ll probably want an assistant on standby when the chair arrives to make things easier.
Our Verdict
The chair has incredible production values and is built to last. If you buy one, you can count on it delivering years of reliable service. While it’s not quite as versatile as the Osborn, it’s an outstanding second choice if the Osborn proves to be unworkable for you for any reason.
Also Great
La-Z-Boy Niagara Rocker Recliner
Recommended For: Anyone up to 6’4” in height, weighing 300 pounds or less.
La-Z-Boy is one of the best-known names in the American furniture industry. Not only have they been in the business for a long time, but they’ve also earned a reputation for excellence, reflected in the quality of their products and their post-sales service and support.
The Niagara is an excellent example of their work. Let’s start by reviewing the chair’s basic stats.
Chair Specifications
This is a fairly sizeable (though surprisingly lightweight), stylish piece of furniture, offered in your choice of Fossil or Platinum-colored fabric. Both are neutral colors, which makes it easy for this attractive chair to blend seamlessly into your home’s existing décor scheme, whatever it might be.
Unfortunately, this model doesn’t incorporate wall-hugging technology into its design, so you’ll need to ensure at least 15” of space between the back of the chair and the wall you plan to place it near.
Based on the stats above, we’d judge this to be a good chair for anyone up to about 6’4” in height, weighing 300 pounds or less, which makes it a good fit for the vast majority of the market.
Recline Function
Understand that this is a standard three-position manual recliner, with its default position, “TV Mode,” and “Fully Reclined” mode available. That makes it less flexible than power recliners, which typically offer infinite recline positions. Still, if you’re not too particular, those three positions will work well enough.
One detail worth mentioning is that you can recline the seat back without engaging the footrest, making it more versatile than a conventional three-position recliner.
Note that when fully reclined, the Niagara doesn’t lay completely flat. It gets you about 80% of the way there, which is fine for most purposes. If you need a lay-flat recliner, this isn’t the one you want.
Comfort
Where comfort is concerned, the Niagara delivers via a mix of block foam, poly fiberfill, and a supporting layer of springs, delivering a delightful seating, napping, or sleeping experience. Granted, it’s not next-level comfort like you get with chairs that offer memory foam or other advanced comfort materials, but it is wonderfully comfortable. You’ll have no difficulty snuggling into this chair and drifting to sleep.
Rocker
In addition to being a high-quality, low-priced recliner, it pulls double duty as a rocker, making it a great addition to any home nursery. Even better, this is one of only a handful of recliners on the market today that is built with ergonomic features woven into the mix. Here, you’ll find both lumbar support and well-implemented whole-back support.
Not only does that help make the chair even more comfortable, but it’s also a nice compliment to your home office chair, assuming you have one. It’s incredibly likely that whatever office chair you’re using sports ergonomic features, but most other home furnishings don’t. Kudos to La-Z-Boy for the inclusion. A nice touch, indeed.
Our Verdict
All that to say, it’s an exceptionally well-made, versatile piece of furniture suitable for various purposes. The only (minor) drawbacks to the model are these:
Neither of those is a deal-breaker, though. Given the modest price this chair is being offered, it’s an excellent choice for just about anyone. As long as you don’t need to lay perfectly flat, it’s one of the best recliners to sleep in for the money.
Ashley Ludden Rocker and Recliner
Recommended For: Anyone who weighs less than 350 pounds (the swivel option will support users weighing up to 250 pounds).
The Ashley Ludden is one of the most versatile pieces of furniture today, offered by a company with a history of excellence in the American furniture market. It’s also a good-looking chair, offered in four different colors, which makes it easy for this chair to blend in seamlessly with the rest of your home’s décor scheme, no matter what it might be.
Chair Specifications
Before we get into specifics, though, here are the basic stats that define this model:
This model isn’t big enough to be a big and tall chair. The relatively lightweight and maximum supported weight values don’t support it, but it’s a delightfully overstuffed chair. Even better, you can get yours in either power or manual configurations and on a standard or swiveling base. However, be aware that if you order the swivel base, it will significantly reduce the weight the chair can support.
Even so, counting the color options gives you a dozen configurations, which is impressive.
Unfortunately, none of the Ludden options incorporate wall-hugging technology into their design, so you’ll need to place the chair about 20” from whatever wall you plan on setting it near.
Power vs Manual
You’ll get a standard three-position recliner if you choose the manual option. If you choose the power option, you’ll have unlimited recline options. Whichever you choose, the chair will lay about 80% flat at the Ludden’s maximum recline angle.
While it doesn’t lay flat, that’s good enough for most of the market and certainly enough to get a decent night’s sleep. After all, if you have a condition like sleep apnea or are recovering from surgery, it may be outright impossible to get a good night’s sleep while lying flat on your back.
Comfort
On the comfort front, the Ludden features a wonderfully soft pillowed upholstery covering generous amounts of block foam and poly fiberfill, supported by steel springs. While it’s not the most comfortable chair we’ve ever had the pleasure of sitting in, it does offer a spectacularly relaxing seating experience.
It gets better because this is one of the few recliners on the market today that offers ergonomic support! The lumbar support system and the chair’s whole-back support are expertly implemented, enhancing the chair’s comfort.
Our Verdict
So, it’s a rocker, a recliner, it lays mostly flat, and it is comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep. You can get yours in a dozen different configurations, counting the Ludden’s color options. That’s pretty spectacular, making it an easy chair to love.
The only real drawbacks are these:
However, none of those are deal-breakers, and this is a superb chair — one of the best reclining chairs for sleeping on the market today.
La-Z-Boy Calvin Recliner Rocker
Recommended For: Anyone who wants a strong and reliable recliner.
This is La-Z-Boy’s second entry on our list of finalists, and the company needs no introduction. As we said earlier, just about everybody living in the United States has at least heard the name. That’s because they have an outstanding reputation in the American furniture market and make great products, the Calvin Rocking Recliner being no exception.
Chair Specifications
Here’s a quick breakdown of the chair’s basic stats:
As you can see, this is a surprisingly lightweight chair, but despite that, it can support an impressive amount of user weight. The seat width is a little narrow compared to other recliners on our list of finalists, but overall, the chair is built to appeal to a broad cross-section of the market.
It doesn’t incorporate Wall Hugger technology, but it’s also not an enormous piece of furniture, so unless your house has super cramped space, it should be possible to find a permanent home for this model.
Comfort
Comfort-wise, this chair is a delight. It’s padded with generous amounts of block foam supported by a network of springs. Granted, it’s not next-level comfort, but sitting or sleeping in it is a joy. Although the Calvin didn’t score quite as well as the La-Z-Boy Niagara, it is slightly more comfortable, making this the best lazy boy recliner for sleeping on the market today.
Recline Function
As a power recliner, it also offers an infinite number of possible recline positions, though note that there are no presets, so you’ll have to hold the recline button down until the chair is in the position you want. That’s not a huge issue, as the motor is powerful, quiet, and offers smooth recline action.
When fully reclined, the Calvin won’t lay you completely flat, but it certainly comes close enough that you won’t have any issues getting comfortable and drifting off to sleep. Besides, depending on why you’re in the market for a sleeper recliner, laying perfectly flat may be impractical for you to sleep.
We were somewhat disappointed that this chair doesn’t offer any advanced seating options, so there are no Zero-G or Trendelenburg positions. But the Calvin makes up for that by providing exceptional lumbar support and very well-implemented whole-back support, making it one of the very few recliners to offer ergonomic features. Kudos to La-Z-Boy on that front!
Extras
In addition, the chair has a handy USB charging port, so you can charge your favorite device fully while you’re in it.
One of the more common failings of power recliners is that while lift chairs almost always offer a battery backup system, power recliners rarely do. While the standard Calvin doesn’t come with one, it is an optional feature you can add if you order directly from the company’s website. That’s a great move and a high-value addition to the chair. Again, kudos to La-Z-Boy!
Color and Variant Options
Finally, we should note that this model is available in two colors and that La-Z-Boy makes several variants. So, if the stats above aren’t an exact fit for you but you like the chair in general, visit the company’s website directly to see if there’s a Calvin variant closer to what you’re looking for.
Our Verdict
All things considered, this is a great, versatile, comfortable piece of furniture you’ll be proud to own. It’s made right here in the United States and offered by one of the most respected companies in the market today. We love it, and we think you will, too. Recommended!
Catnapper Cloud 12
Recommended For: Anyone who has the space for it. This chair is awesome.
Catnapper makes a second appearance on this portion of our list with the Cloud 12, a superb, basic three-position rocker and recliner. While it doesn’t offer any extras, it’s a great-looking chair, available in a trio of colors that make it easy to blend in with your existing home décor scheme.
Chair Specifications
Before we go any deeper than that, though, let’s have a quick look at the chair’s core stats:
As you can see, this is a big piece of furniture that will require a significant amount of space in whatever room you decide to put it in. Its design does not incorporate Wall Hugger technology, so you’ll need even more space to use this chair to its fullest potential.
The Cloud 12 would be a fabulous addition to a nursery if you have a new baby or are expecting one (and again, provided you can fit it comfortably into the room). With a wider-than-average seat and rocking capabilities, it provides a great platform for baby feeding time and is more than comfortable enough to give weary parents a place to sleep if they want to stay close to the crib.
Comfort
The comfort system comprises delightfully comfortable upholstery, stretched over a blend of block foam and poly fiberfill, supported by a network of more than fifty individually wrapped comfort coil springs. While the level of comfort this system provides isn’t quite as good as memory foam, it is incredibly comfortable. It’s easy to see how this chair got its name!
Recline Function
In addition to being a well-padded rocker, it’s also a manual, three-position recliner that lays almost completely flat when fully reclined. You won’t have any difficulty sleeping through the night in this chair.
Even if you’re not interested in sleeping in the chair, you’ll find it surprisingly versatile. Although it is just a standard three-position manual recliner, it does allow you to recline the seat back without engaging the footrest, which gives you a few more options regarding recline angles and seating configurations.
White Glove Service
As with most of the chairs on this list, the Cloud 12 doesn’t come fully assembled, but the company offers White Glove Service. So, if you’d rather not deal with getting the chair ready for first use, you certainly don’t have to.
Our Verdict
Whatever your reason for being in the market for a rocking recliner, the Cloud 12 is an exceptional choice for lounging, napping, or even sleeping through the night. Even better, it’s expertly crafted using high-quality materials and is built to provide years of reliable service. It’s one of the best chairs to sleep in on the market today. You won’t be disappointed.
Flash Furniture Contemporary Rocker and Recliner
Recommended For: Anyone looking for a cozy rocker recliner and weighing 250 pounds below.
We love Flash Furniture! They’re a smallish brand and much less well-known than the heavy hitters in the industry. Still, they make regular appearances on our roundup reviews, and the Contemporary Rocker and Recliner is a solid example of their work, well-deserving of a spot on this list.
Chair Specifications
Before we tell you more about it, let’s have a quick look at this model’s basic stats:
The first thing that jumps out is that this is a surprisingly big chair. Even more surprising is that despite its impressive dimensions, it’s also very lightweight. Because of that, it doesn’t support much user weight, and the seat width is a bit disappointing, at a scant 17”.
Unfortunately, that limits the chair’s appeal. Assuming you weigh less than 250 pounds and that the seat width isn’t an issue, though, you’ll find this chair to be a good option and an excellent addition to almost any home.
We should also add that the chair isn’t as big as it first appears. It’s like a giant fluffy cat. All that fur on the cat makes it look big, but once you start petting it, you find the cat’s not huge.
Comfort
In this case, the chair’s size is a bit of an illusion made possible by generous amounts of padding, a combination of conventional block foam, and poly fiberfill. Since the padding is abundant and the chair is upholstered in “Softsuede” fabric, it is a delight to sit or sleep in.
Rocking Function
As its name indicates, it’s a rocking recliner, but unfortunately, you can’t rock while reclining. A couple of chairs on the market are capable of this, but the Flash Furniture offering is unfortunately not one of them.
In addition to providing smooth rocking action, it’s also a standard three-position manual recliner, allowing you to sit up straight, partially recline into “TV Mode” (which is also great for napping), or fully recline. When fully reclined, the chair doesn’t lay completely flat, but it comes close enough to get a decent night’s sleep if you like.
No Extras
While there are no extras on offer (though you can order this model in a modest selection of colors), this is a surprisingly capable chair, offered at a price that will make you smile.
Assembly Required
Sadly, it won’t arrive at your doorstep pre-assembled, and White Glove Service is unavailable, so you’ll want to ensure you have a trusty assistant on hand to help out on that front. The process isn’t complicated, and preparing the chair for first use won’t take long.
The only other thing to mention here is that this is a lightly built chair, so it’s not designed to withstand the rigors of heavy daily use for years on end. Then again, since it’s such an inexpensive chair, when it wears out after a few years of use, it’s easy enough to replace it with something else as your needs evolve.
Our Verdict
While it’s not the best recliner for sleeping on the market today, it’s an excellent, comfortable budget option that will serve you well in the short to medium term.
ProLounger Wall Hugger Recliner
Recommended for: Anyone weighing under 300 pounds and up to 6’1” in height. It’s a modest little chair.
We regard the little ProLounger Wall Hugger Recliner as a hidden gem on the market. It’s delightfully low-priced and surprisingly capable. Although the ProLounger is imported from China, it’s made of surprisingly high-quality materials, and the production quality is a cut above what you usually see from low-cost imports.
Chair Specifications
Before we get into the specifics, let’s start as we have previously, with a review of the chair’s basic stats:
A couple of things jump out right away when looking at these numbers. First, this isn’t a huge chair compared to most of the other chairs on our list of finalists. Finding a permanent home for the chair shouldn’t be too difficult, even if you’re a little cramped with space at your house.
The ProLounger is also built with Wall Hugger technology incorporated into its design, which makes space needed even less of an issue.
Unfortunately, its market appeal is somewhat limited since it’s not a huge chair. With a seat width of just 17”, some people simply won’t fit into it, even though it has a fairly standard 300-pound weight limit.
Recline Function
Assuming that’s not an issue, you’ll get a standard three-position recliner if you decide to order one. You’ll be able to sit upright, partially recline into “TV Watching Mode,” which is also great for napping, or fully recline, which is a good position for sleeping.
Note that when fully reclined, the chair doesn’t lay completely flat, but it does come close enough that you won’t have any difficulty getting a good night’s sleep in the chair.
Comfort
That comes down to the fact that despite its modest price, the ProLounger features a surprisingly advanced comfort system that utilizes a combination of block foam, poly fiberfill, and individually wrapped comfort coils. The result is delightfully comfortable and easily on par with much more expensive chairs today.
No Extras & Assembly Required
While the ProLounger doesn’t offer any onboard storage or extras, and White Glove Service is not available, so when the chair arrives at your door in a single giant box, you’ll want to be sure to have a trusty assistant on hand to help you put it together.
The assembly process is straightforward and should take no more than a few minutes. Then, you’re ready to sit down and start enjoying your new favorite chair!
Our Verdict
The ProLounger isn’t perfect. It sticks strictly to the basics and doesn’t try to do too much. Its seat is too narrow for mass-market appeal. If the measurements aren’t an issue for you, though, it’s a fantastic budget option that’s well worth considering.
Many recliner chairs are available today, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more capable model for the money.
Lifestyle Power Recliner
Recommended For: Anyone 5’ to 6’ tall weighing 250 pounds or less.
Although all of the chairs we’ve discussed are excellent, we didn’t feel this portion of our review would be complete without giving a quick shout-out to the Lifestyle Power Recliner. It’s sold by a smaller, off-brand that imports its wares from China for resale. It’s a surprisingly good recliner and a delightfully inexpensive power option.
Chair Specifications
Here are the basic stats that define this model:
As you can see, it’s a lightweight chair incapable of supporting a ton of weight. So, while it’s fine for shorter to average-sized people with light to medium builds, it will be a non-starter for taller or heavier folks.
Even so, given its smallish size (for a recliner) and the Wall Hugger technology incorporated into its design, finding a permanent home for this chair should be simple, even if space is at a premium in your house.
Comfort
The chair fares reasonably well on the comfort front but relies on block foam for padding. There’s a generous amount of it, so it provides a comfortable seating and sleeping experience. But in the longer term, due to the lower quality of the padding, it will start sagging and generally losing its ability to hold its shape.
Recline Option
Also, despite being a power recliner, this model doesn’t allow infinite recline angles. You’re limited to three presets corresponding to the seating options offered by conventional, manual three-position recliners. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, and for the money, it’s certainly not a deal-breaker, but it is something to be mindful of.
The bottom line is that this is a good budget option. If you don’t have a ton of money to spend, but you want a good-looking power recliner that will lay flat (or close enough to flat to give you a decent night’s sleep), and you just need something for a couple of years, this is a great choice.
Extras & Assembly Required
In fact, it even offers one “extra”: a handy USB charging port, so you can keep your favorite smart device fully charged while you’re sitting in your chair.
This model doesn’t come assembled, and White Glove Service is unavailable, but given its lightweight and the simplicity of its design, the assembly process is quick and painless.
Our Verdict
Is it a perfect chair? Sadly, no, but again, for the money, it’s a solid choice for anyone looking for a short-term seating/napping/sleeping solution. On that basis, we provisionally recommend it.

Our Pick: Windermere Burton Power Lift Recliner
Recommended For: Anyone, but it’s an especially good fit for taller users.
Windermere Burton is a legendary company in the industry. A subsidiary of Mega Motion, owned by Pride Mobility, it has a stellar pedigree and a longstanding reputation for building quality lift chairs. Unsurprisingly, the company produced the chair that would ultimately become our top pick in this category.
Chair Specifications
Before we get into the specific features this chair brings to the table, though, let’s begin by doing a quick review of the core stats that define the model:
Seat depth is the first thing that jumps at us regarding these numbers. At a whopping 25”, this chair was designed with taller people in mind. Shorter people who sit back in the seat won’t be able to bend their legs properly over the side of the chair.
Having said that, the maximum supported weight is decent but not high enough to make it a truly big and tall chair.
Assuming the measurements match, you’ll find much to like about this design. It’s attractively styled and looks as comfortable and inviting as it feels when you walk up to it and have a seat.
Comfort
The Windermere Burton utilizes a mix of block foam and poly fiberfill, combined with a comfort coil system for added support. The chair’s cushioning is similar to that of most high-quality mattresses on the market today. Granted, the comfort isn’t next-level, like you’d get if the chair utilized memory foam or other advanced comfort materials, but it is delightful.
Recline Function
Comfort encompasses more than one dimension, and this chair has much to offer besides generous padding. For one thing, the chair offers unlimited recline angles because you can use the controls to tweak the angle to your liking.
Some people like the cone-touch convenience of presets, but honestly, it doesn’t take much to hold the button down and get the chair where you want it, so we don’t see the absence of presets as a huge deal.
Trendelenburg Seating Position
The chair also offers a Trendelenburg seating position, which reclines you to a position where you’re flat on your back with your feet elevated 15-30 degrees above your head. This is superb for people who suffer from poor circulation and anyone recovering from surgery.
We would have preferred to see one or more Zero-G seating positions instead of Trendelenburg, but they offer similar benefits, so this is a decent substitute.
This model has two motors: one to drive the recline function and the other to drive the lift function. Both are powerful, quiet and offer smooth action.
Storage and Extras
The Windermere Burton features a total of three storage pockets, all of them generously sized. That’s enough to give you plenty of room to store your favorite books, magazines, and other supplies you might need while spending several hours in your new favorite chair.
Battery Backup
In addition, this model offers a simple, effective battery backup system, which is much more important than you might first think. Here’s why:
Most people invest in a good lift chair because they struggle to get their feet back under them after sitting for an extended period. The lift function provides the boost they need, and it’s all good.
Except, of course, for when the lights go out. In that case, if you’re reclining when the power fails and you don’t have a chair with a battery backup, you’re stuck until somebody comes along and finds you to assist you.
The battery backup solves that. It gives you greater freedom and independence, allowing you to get up without assistance. Hopefully, you’ll never need it, but the first time you do, it’ll become your favorite feature of the chair’s design.
USB Port
Finally, this model offers a handy USB charging port, so you can keep your favorite device fully charged while sitting in your chair. That gives you a whole world of entertainment options at your fingertips.
Our Verdict
It’s loaded with extras, delightfully comfortable, and offers an advanced seating position with genuine therapeutic benefits. Those are all good things, but again, it’s worth mentioning that the seat depth marks this as a chair designed for taller people.
If you’re short, it’s going to be difficult to sit properly in the chair, although even then, sleeping in it will be a delight. This is a superb product, and we absolutely recommend it—a nearly perfect sleeper recliner.
Runner-Up: Serta Hampton
Recommended For: Anyone between 5’4” and 6’4,” weighing 375 pounds or less.
Another company offers our second-place chair. Serta has a long, proud history in the American furniture industry. Best known for its world-class mattresses, the company also makes a wide range of furniture, including this impressive lift chair.
Given that the chair is designed for long-term sitting, napping, and sleeping through the night as an alternative to a bed, Serta’s mattress expertise is invaluable, and they put their experience to good use in this design. We’ll review the core stats defining the model before we get into the particulars.
Chair Specifications
As with our first-place winner, this is a hefty piece of furniture. It doesn’t incorporate Wall Hugger technology into its design, so finding a permanent home for this chair might be a struggle if space is at a premium in your house.
If the chair’s size is not an issue and the other measurements are a good fit, you’ll find a lot to like here.
The Serta Hampton is a relatively unassuming design. It’s not unattractive; the design team emphasizes function over form more. Given the dimensions above, it’s well-suited to users ranging in height from 5’4” to about 6’4”. That, combined with its weight range, makes it a good fit for most of the market, although big and tall users will have to look elsewhere.
Although the chair isn’t flashy or showy, lurking beneath the upholstery, you’ll find a well-made piece of furniture. The frame comprises hardwoods, marine-grade plywood, and solid steel lift mechanism. This chair was built to last. Proper care should provide you with years of reliable, mostly hassle-free service.
Recline Function
As a power recliner, the Hampton offers infinite recline options, although you’ll have to tweak the settings to get the angle you want. There are no pre-set, pre-defined positions on offer. That’s not a deal-breaker, but if you’re looking for one-touch convenience, you won’t find it here.
Comfort
Aesthetics and production quality are all good, but most people who buy a lift chair are interested in comfort. Given Serta’s experience in the mattress market, the Hampton delivers in style regarding comfort.
You won’t find any block foam here; the chair is padded with gel-infused memory foam, which makes it one of, if not the most comfortable recliner to sleep in on the market today.
However, there are two drawbacks to be aware of. First, unlike our top pick, this chair does not feature advanced seating positions, so no Zero-G or Trendelenburg seating option is available.
Second, one of the most persistent complaints about the Hampton is that although the motors are quiet, they’re also somewhat slower than the average. It’s not a huge deal, but it does take a little longer for this chair to recline to your preferred angle or to help you to your feet when you engage the lift function.
Assembly Required
Finally, be aware that the chair is not assembled at your doorstep. It’s not difficult to put together, but it may be a bit daunting if you suffer from a mobility issue.
The two best solutions here would be to either have a trusty assistant on standby the day the chair arrives or pay a little extra for Serta’s White Glove service, which makes getting the chair ready for its first use entirely hands-free.
Storage and Extras
In addition to being delightfully comfortable, the Serta Hampton offers three extras: a generously sized storage pocket, a battery backup system, and a USB port. These enhance the chair’s value and are great additions.
From a practical perspective, the battery backup is the most valuable feature. Still, ample storage room for supplies and a USB port for keeping your favorite device fully charged are super handy features that make the chair easier and more convenient to use, especially if you plan on spending several hours each day sitting in it.
Our Verdict
The Serta Hampton is not just a recliner you can sleep in; it’s the most comfortable recliner in its class, and it only narrowly missed being our top pick. This is superb if you value comfort over advanced seating options and aesthetics.
Value Pick: Catnapper Burns Power Lift Recliner
Recommended For: Anyone up to 400 pounds who is looking for a great, basic power lift recliner. If you’re looking for tons of extras, this one’s not a good fit.
Catnapper is another titan in the American furniture industry. With their amazing Catnapper Burns Power Lift Recliner, they’ve claimed third place in our power lift roundup. Before we get into the specifics, we’ll start as we have previously by reviewing the basic stats that define the model.
Chair Specifications
As with the other models we’ve discussed, this is a big piece of furniture, so it may be difficult to find a home for it if you live in a smaller house or apartment. Assuming that’s not an issue, this is a great choice for bigger, taller folks with the most supported user weight in its class.
Aesthetics & Design
It’s not the most attractive chair in the world, but it’s certainly not ugly. Its unobtrusive nature, combined with its availability in a modest selection of colors, makes it super easy to blend the chair into your home’s existing décor scheme.
So far, the chairs we’ve discussed in this section have all offered a little something extra—either a next-level comfort system or an advanced seating position. The Catnapper Burns focuses on the basics, and every feature the chair offers is executed brilliantly. However, it does not offer a huge number of extras.
Recline Function
It has two powerful, quiet motors that offer smooth reclining and lift action and an infinite number of recline angles possible. It also lays flat, providing a good platform for a decent night’s sleep, helped along by the presence of comfort coils supporting block foam and poly fiberfill.
Extras
Where extras are concerned, it offers a battery backup system and a pair of side pockets with generous built-in storage.
A couple of things you won’t find on this model, though, are a USB charging port or any type of advanced seating position. This makes this a somewhat basic chair that doesn’t offer as many bells and whistles as some of the other models we’ve talked about in this section.
Our Verdict
The biggest single point of differentiation between this model and the others on our list of finalists is that it supports slightly more user weight. If the weight limits of the other chairs on our list of finalists are problematic for you, this slight increase might be enough to push this one to the top of your personal list.
While it’s not the best in class, this model is a case study of well-rounded excellence. It’s not the most exciting model on the market, but it’s a great all-around power lift chair, proudly made in the US of A. It won’t disappoint. A great sleeper recliner design.
Also Great
UltraComfort UC 546
Recommended For: Users 5’2” and under, weighing 300 pounds or less.
UltraComfort isn’t as big or well-established as most of the others on our list of finalists, which speaks volumes about its quality. Since the brand doesn’t have the same heft as Serta, Catnapper, and the rest, it’s got to work that much harder to make up the difference.
Their work paid off, as evidenced by their respectable fourth-place ranking in our review. This is an impressive, American-made piece of furniture that will serve you well. Before we take a closer look at what it offers, let’s start with a stats review.
Chair Specifications
Like the other power sleeper recliners we’ve talked about, this is a hefty piece of furniture that will tend to dominate smaller rooms.
Also, like the others we’ve highlighted, it doesn’t incorporate Wall Hugger technology into its design, so you’ll need to place it quite some distance from whatever wall you plan to place it near, which means that it will take up even more space in the room you choose to place it in.
It’s a reasonably attractive piece of furniture, though, and offered in a modest selection of colors (see our full review for the specifics), so you won’t have any particular difficulty getting the chair to blend seamlessly with your existing home décor scheme.
Despite its impressive size, this isn’t a great chair for bigger, taller folks. Not only is the weight limit too low to support that idea, but the chair’s other dimensions mark it as most appropriate for users ranging in height from about 5’3” to about 5’10”. If you’re much taller than that, one of the other models on our list of finalists will almost certainly be a better fit for you.
If you are especially interested in this model, however, note that the company offers this chair in a variety of size variants. If you decide you’ve got to have this one, you can probably find it on the company’s website.
Eclipse Technology
One of the key features this chair offers is its proprietary “Eclipse Technology,” which, based on their description, is a seating position that gives you a feeling of weightlessness.
In practice, this is mostly the same as standard Zero-G seating, but with one important difference. Eclipse Technology provides the experience while keeping the chair in a constant, gentle rocking motion. It’s an interesting feature, but we’re not convinced that it’s different enough to warrant all the time and R&D dollars spent on its development. Your mileage may vary. If you love it, then you’ll love this chair!
Recline Options
The remote offers three preset seating positions that align with the standard reclining positions found on manual recliners: upright, TV mode, and full recline. The buttons on the remote also allow you to veer from the presets and set your own recline angle precisely.
We love that both options are available. One-touch convenience is great, but paired with infinite recline angles, it’s even better. This chair only lacks a memory function that allows you to save your preferred settings.
Comfort
It’s also a delightfully comfortable chair featuring a comfort system that mirrors those we’ve discussed: Block foam supported by a system of comfort coils. UltraComfort does a great job on that front, and the chair makes a delightful platform for sitting, napping, and even sleeping through the night.
Extras
Unfortunately, the chair falls short on storage. The single pocket is a bit undersized for our tastes, but the battery backup is well-designed and effective.
Of particular interest is the fact that the company offers a variant of this chair with both heat and massage functionality, which makes it unique among our list of finalists. Granted, the massage function is quite basic, relying on a network of stationary massage heads to render a simple vibration-style massage.
Still, some massage is better than none, and massage plus heat makes it even better!
Assembly
Again, like the other top contenders we’ve talked about so far, the UltraComfort does not come assembled. Still, the assembly process is fairly simple, and if you’d rather not contend with it yourself, White Glove service is available.
Our Verdict
Bear in mind that if you’re not brand-conscious and remove the Brand Reliability metric from consideration, this chair places second and only narrowly loses to our overall top pick. That speaks volumes about the quality of the product UltraComfort has created here. This one’s a hidden gem in the power sleep recliners. We recommend it.
Med Lift 5555
Recommended For: Users between 5’6” and 6’4,” weigh 375 pounds or less, and are looking for a durable sleeper recliner with lift functionality.
We didn’t feel this portion of our review would be complete without giving a shout-out to Med Lift for their impressive 5555.
Med-Lift isn’t a big company. It doesn’t have the reach, reputation, and record of post-sales service and support of most other brands we’ve featured in this part of our roundup, but the 5555 is an awesome sleeper recliner and lift chair.
If none of the others we’ve mentioned are what you’re looking for, this model is well worth consideration. Like all of the chairs that have made our list of finalists, this one has something special that sets it apart from the rest of the pack.
Chair Specifications
Before we get into all that, though, let’s run through the chair’s basic stats:
This is a strangely heavy chair, given that it only supports average user weight. It’s also a big piece of furniture, so the same thing we’ve said before about the struggle people with smaller homes or apartments have holds true here.
Assembly
In addition, since this chair doesn’t come assembled and is heavy, you may want to spend a little extra for White Glove service so you don’t have to deal with the assembly process at all.
Upholstery
It’s a sharp-looking, comfortable chair available in fabric and leather upholstery. For the reasons we mentioned earlier in this roundup, we recommend the fabric option over the leather variant.
Also, it’s worth mentioning that Med Lift uses bonded leather rather than genuine grain leather for its upholstery.
In addition to suffering the same basic limitations as grain leather, bonded leather is weaker structurally and less supple because it’s made of leather scraps that have been fused together. After about a year of heavy use, it will start showing its age by peeling and cracking. Not good.
Recline Function
The 5555 focuses on the basics and implements them well. When you buy one of these, you get an incredibly solid, well-made infinite-position lift recliner that features powerful, quiet motors and three preset seating positions on the remote, just like we described with the UltraComfort chair.
Comfort
It’s not quite as comfortable as the other models we’ve discussed, but it offers a good seating or sleeping experience. It relies more heavily on conventional block foam than our other options. That’s one of the tradeoffs concerning this model: It doesn’t cost quite as much as our top picks, but the comfort system isn’t advanced.
Storage and Extras
The Med Lift 5555 comes with covers for the armrests and headrest, a single, generously sized storage compartment, and a simple but effective battery backup system. That’s pretty standard, but this is where Med Lift truly shines.
If you go to the company’s page on Amazon, you’ll find that the company makes a wide range of companion products that work together beautifully with their lift chair.
We recommend buying and using the chair for a month or two before seriously considering adding extras. Then, once you’ve got a feel for how you’re using it, you’ll better understand what kinds of extras would be the best fit for you.
Our Verdict
Even without the extras, this is a well-designed chair and exceptional value for the money. It’s sure to be the top pick for people who like to use products with a lot of natural synergy between them—a very good sleep chair recliner with a lot to offer the right owner.
Other Options to Consider
Flash Furniture Kids Recliner with Cup Holder
Recommended For: A good-looking, fun, basic recliner for children under 90 pounds.
While this chair doesn’t neatly fit into the categories we defined at the start of this review if you have a small child who, for whatever reason, is having difficulty sleeping in their bed and you’re looking for a good recliner that can serve as a napping chair or even provide something that can be used to sleep through the night, it’s hard to beat the Flash Furniture Kids Recliner with Cup Holder.
It may be small, but it’s delightfully comfortable. Even better, it’s offered in an amazing array of fun colors and upholstery options, so you can almost certainly get it in your child’s favorite color.
While it doesn’t lay perfectly flat, it reclines far enough for your child to get a decent night’s sleep. Even better, its small size makes it easy to squeeze into whatever room your full-sized recliner occupies, so you can sit next to your child and keep them company.
Chair Specifications
For your reference, here are the core stats that define this model:
As you can see, based on these numbers, this isn’t a chair you’ll be buying for long-term use. Your child is destined to outgrow this model fairly quickly, but if you need something like this, you need it, and given the modest price Flash offers this model, it’s a great investment indeed.
It relies on conventional block foam for padding, and a generous amount of it makes it delightfully comfortable. On top of that, it comes with a cup holder built into one armrest, which should reduce the number of spills you have to clean up.
Best of all, it arrives at your door fully assembled, so all you have to do is unbox it, decide where you want it, and invite your little one to have a seat. When bedtime rolls around, add a warm, comfy blanket, and you’re all set!
Dorel Living Padded Dual Massage Recliner
Recommended For: Users between 5’ and 6’ tall, weighing less than 250 pounds.
The last option we wanted to bring to your attention is a little off the beaten track, but it’s such an interesting chair with such an intriguing mix of capabilities that we couldn’t resist including it here. Before we start talking about the features this chair brings to the table though, let’s review the chair’s core statistics.
Chair Specifications
When we look at these numbers, the first thing that jumps out at us is that it’s a niche product. With a seat width that’s not as wide as many of the other products we’ve looked at and a modest amount of supported weight, this chair will be too small for many prospective buyers to use.
Assuming that’s not an issue for you, and you’re no taller than 6’, here’s what you have to look forward to if you decide to buy this model.
The first thing to note about Dorel Living’s offering is that it’s a combination rocker and recliner, making it a great, low-cost addition to almost any home nursery. The recline function is manual, controlled by a simple lever on the side of the chair.
It comes with three standard positions on most manual recliners: upright, partially reclined, and fully reclined. When fully reclined, the chair lays almost flat—not completely, but close enough that you’ll be able to sleep comfortably through the night.
The chair is generously padded, but given its modest price, it relies on block foam for comfort. You won’t find any memory foam, comfort coils, or other advanced comfort systems here. Even so, there’s enough block foam to provide a delightful seating, lounging, or sleeping space.
However, it should be pointed out that this is a lightly constructed Chinese import. It isn’t the chair you want if you’re looking to buy something that will withstand the rigors of heavy daily use for years.
At its price point, it’s the kind of chair you buy to provide a few years of service, and then you retire it and either replace it with something else or get rid of it and do something else with the space it once occupied.
So far, all of that sounds rather lackluster, but this chair has a surprise that may delight you. It offers a surprisingly robust vibration-style massage with lumbar heat!
Granted, there are limitations here because the massage is rendered using a series of stationary massage heads that vibrate in place, but this model does offer some ability to control and customize the massage.
There are heads in both the seat and the seatback and switches on the side of the chair allow you to activate them independently. The switch also allows you to choose between two different intensity settings: low or high.
The heat function is tied to the massage function, so you can’t have one without the other, but that’s not uncommon.
Proper massage chairs are expensive, with the best ones often costing as much as a decent used car. While this little chair can’t compare to those chairs, it provides real therapeutic benefits and is offered for a song.
If you’re in the market for a chair that can serve as a rocker, a napping or sleeping recliner, and a basic massager, all in one delightfully low-cost package, this chair is hard to beat. Again, it’s certainly not for everyone, but this chair is close to perfect for the right user!
Final Thoughts on the Best Recliners for Sleeping in 2025
So, what is the best recliner to sleep in? Ultimately, that depends on what you’re looking for. As we said at the start, when we began our search, we broke the sleeper recliner market into two segments: Chairs with lift functionality and chairs without that feature. After an exhaustive search, we declared a winner for each category, and we stand by our two top picks.
In our view, the best recliners for sleeping are the Catnapper Owens if you don’t need a lift chair and the Windermere Burton power lift recliner if that functionality is critical to you.
However, we understand that tastes and preferences will differ, and our top pick may not meet your needs and some of the other chairs that we compared our winners against. Here, then, is a quick summary of why one of the other models in our roundup may be of greater interest to you:
In the Non-Lift Recliner Category:
In the Lift Recliner Category:
In addition to that, we also talked about two alternatives that didn’t neatly fit into our main categories:
At the end of the day, the real question is, which of these awesome sleeper recliners is the best fit for you?
