We’ve scoured the internet on a quest to find the best recliners for sleeping on the market today. During our search, we realized that it was impractical to consider all recliners in a single category, so we broke them down into two groups: Lift chairs and recliners, which include both manual and powered recliners, as well as recliner-rockers.

We identified a short list of the best chairs in each class and evaluated them against each other, ultimately declaring two winners. We’ll tell you all about the winning chairs just below, and if you disagree with our top picks, we’ll provide full details on all of our finalists. Before we do that though, let’s start by taking a high-level look at the chairs that made our short list in each category.

Because there are more standard recliners on the market today than there are lift chairs, we ended up with a list of regular recliners and another list of lift chair finalists. Before we proceed, let’s introduce them.

Best Recliners for Sleeping in 2024

Best Lift Recliner Chairs for Sleeping

Do you suffer from a mobility issue that makes it exceedingly difficult to get into and out of bed? Are you recovering from a recent surgery? Do you have a medical condition like sleep apnea? Are you a new or expectant mother?

These are just a few reasons why sleeping in your bed might be impractical, if not downright impossible. Whatever your reasons for wanting a sleeper recliner, this roundup review was written with you in mind.

But before we start talking about the details of our top picks and our selection criteria, we should say a few words about why we chose to break this roundup into two lists: Lift Recliners and Non-Lift Recliners.

Lift vs Non-Lift Sleeper

While both types of recliners offer some excellent sleeper options, they generally cater to two very different groups of the market.

Lift chairs tend to be much more highly sought after by people who suffer from some type of mobility issue, where the lift mechanism provides a bit of mechanical assistance that helps get the user back on his or her feet again after spending time in the chair.

People with mobility issues may find it extremely difficult or problematic to get into and out of bed, which prompts them to seek a chair that provides both a reliable lift function and serves as a good sleeping platform.

Non-lifting recliners, by contrast, are appealing to a much broader cross-section of the market. Some users will be interested in a recliner that pulls double duty as a sleeper simply because they want a big, comfy chair to nap and hang out in.

New or expectant mothers might want a rocking recliner for the nursery. Sleep apnea sufferers might be very interested in a sleeper recliner but have no need of a chair with a lift function, and so on.

Answering the lift/no-lift question is the first, most fundamental question on the table. After that, it comes down to a few very specific features.

Selection Criteria

Zeroing in on the best recliners for sleeping was no easy task, but as we dove into the depths of the research, some common threads began emerging. In our view, here are the key elements of a great sleeper recliner:

Broadly speaking, there are two categories of recliner upholstery: Fabric and Leather

Leather is very pretty, but we absolutely do not recommend it if you’re buying a recliner to sleep on.

There’s a reason you don’t put leather sheets on your bed. It’s not breathable. If you try to sleep on it, you’ll wind up soaked in sweat. The only solution, really, is to cover the recliner in a sheet before you sleep on it, but why go to that trouble? Just buy a fabric-clad recliner to start with.

Of course, “fabric” is a broad category, and some fabrics are more breathable than others. Our recommendation on that front would be to visit a showroom and try out the sleeper recliner you’re most interested in to get a firsthand sense of it, but generally speaking, even the least breathable fabric is still heads and shoulders better than trying to sleep on leather.

Another factor to consider here is: Many leather recliners are upholstered in bonded leather. That’s real leather, but it’s made with scraps fused together.

Unfortunately, bonded leather is much less supple and durable than genuine grain leather. After a year or two of heavy use, it will start showing its age by peeling and cracking, so on top of making you hot and sweaty, it won’t stand up to long-term use.

Obviously, one of the keys to getting a decent night’s sleep in a recliner is the size factor. If the recliner you buy is too small, you’ll feel confined and constricted. You won’t be able to shift and move in the chair, which means you’re bound to be uncomfortable.

It’s important to take careful measurements to make sure the chair you buy is going to be a good fit for you. But, when taking those measurements, you’ll want to add a few inches to the seat width if you plan on using the chair as a sleeper. More room is almost always better!

It doesn’t matter how big and roomy the chair you pick is if the comfort system isn’t robust and doesn’t at least closely mimic the feeling of sleeping in a bed. At a minimum, the chair you pick should feature generous block foam padding and poly fiberfill.

That’s reasonably comfortable, but the best chairs will go far beyond that, with the next step being those two forms of padding supported by a network of springs. A step beyond that would be various forms of padding supported by comfort coils.

That provides a delightful night’s sleep, but if you can find a chair padded with memory foam, that’s even better.

This is a somewhat less important feature, but it still matters. Manual recliners typically only have three settings: Upright, “TV Mode,” or Fully Reclined. Even so, manual recliners can make good sleepers, but you’ll almost certainly want to test them out at a showroom to be sure you’re happy with the recline angles on offer.

In general, though, power recliners make better sleepers than manual ones, because most power recliners offer an unlimited number of recline angles, which allows you to tweak the position of the chair until it’s in the exact angle you like.

Surprisingly, the ability of a recliner to lay perfectly flat isn’t a huge consideration. It could be in some instances, but in others, that’s actually the last thing you want. Consider:

  • If the reason you’re in the market for a chair is that you’ve recently had surgery, then the most comfortable recliner for sleeping is almost certainly not one that lays flat anyway.
  • In a similar vein, if you suffer from a condition like sleep apnea, sleeping while lying perfectly flat might be outright impossible.

Again, some people will insist on a lay-flat recliner, but it’s by no means a universal requirement.

This is a somewhat open-ended category, but as you read the reviews below, you’ll notice that most of the chairs that ranked highest on our list feature some kind of surprise, high-value feature. There’s no one “thing” that fits the bill here. Examples include things like:

  • Ergonomic features on offer (lumbar support, whole back support).
  • A USB charging port to keep your favorite device fully changed while you’re spending time in the chair.
  • The ability of the seatback to recline without engaging the footrest.
  • A superior comfort system utilizing advanced materials (memory foam).
  • The presence of onboard storage.
  • The presence of a battery backup system.
  • Complimentary products are sold that provide synergy with the chair itself.
  • And so forth.

White Glove Service could even be considered a viable extra.

These were the key factors we zeroed in on when evaluating our finalists. Obviously, different people will place different levels of importance on these factors, which is why, by the time you reach the end of this roundup review, your top pick may differ from ours.

That’s okay, in fact, that’s exactly why we made sure to publish details about not just our overall winners, but all of the chairs on our list of finalists as well!

Our Pick: Catnapper Owens Power Lay Flat Recliner

Our Pick

Catnapper is one of the most well-respected brands in the American furniture industry today, so it’s no great surprise that the company won top honors here. The Owens Lay Flat recliner is a masterpiece of design and a great-looking chair to boot, but it’s not without its limitations.

Chair Specifications

Before we get into the specifics, let’s start with the basic statistics that define the model:

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 42” x 43” x 44”
  • Chair Weight: 140 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 250 pounds
  • Seat Width: 22”
  • Seat Depth: 20”
  • Seat to Floor Height: 20”
Doe Fabric Color, Catnapper Owens with Power Headrest and Lumbar Support, in Left-Front Position

As you can see, this is a sizeable piece of furniture, and it doesn’t incorporate Wall Hugger technology into its design, which means you’re going to need a significant amount of space to use it. If you have a smaller home or apartment, that could be problematic.

The other thing these stats highlight is the chair’s one significant shortcoming. It only supports a modest amount of user weight, which means that it’s not going to be useful for a significant minority of the market.

Power Recline Function

Having said that, you might be wondering how and why this chair managed to snag top honors. That comes down to the fact that in every other respect, this chair is an absolute masterpiece. As a power recliner, it gives you an unlimited number of recline angles to choose from

Adjustable Headrest

That’s not at all uncommon where power recliners are concerned, but the Owens takes things one step farther. The headrest is independently adjustable and offers an unlimited number of adjustment options. That’s huge, and it’s the only chair we’ve seen on the market today that offers that feature. We love it, and we think you will too!

Recliner With Footrest, Catnapper Owens with Power Headrest and Lumbar Support, Doe Fabric
Lay Flat

Even better, when fully reclined, the Owens lays flat, making it a perfect sleeper.

No Memory Function

The only thing we wish is that, especially given the ability to adjust the chair itself and the headrest to an infinite number of positions, we wish the company had included a memory function allowing you to save your favorite settings and recall them again with one-touch convenience.

That feature exists on a few massage chairs, so we know it’s within the realm of possibility, and in our view, would be a great addition to a future model upgrade.

Comfort System

In terms of comfort, the Owens doesn’t disappoint either. It offers a fairly advanced comfort system comprised of high-density block foam and poly fiberfill, supported by an array of individually wrapped, gel-infused comfort coils, just like you see on some models of high-quality mattresses sold today.

It’s not quite as comfortable as memory foam, but it comes pretty close, and it provides a wonderful level of comfort, whether you’re lounging or sleeping in a chair.

Lumbar Support

On top of that, when you’re sitting up, you’ll get the advantage of the chair’s well-implemented lumbar support! While ergonomic features are quite common in the world of office furniture, there aren’t many recliners that offer them. We were thrilled to see the Catnapper Owens break from the pack in this regard!

Seal Fabric Color, Catnapper Owens with Power Headrest and Lumbar Support, in Left-Front Position

Extras

Although this chair doesn’t come with a side storage pocket, it does feature a handy USB port so you can keep your favorite device fully charged while you’re spending time in the chair.

Easy Assembly

As with most chairs in this category, it doesn’t arrive at your door fully assembled, but the process is quick and easy. If you’d rather not be bothered though, White Glove service is available, making the process of getting the chair ready for first use completely hassle-free.

Our Verdict

In other words, the Catnapper Owens does just about everything, including several surprise features that add tremendous value to the chair. If you weigh 250 pounds or less, this chair should be the standard by which all your other options are measured against. It’s one of the best premium sleeper recliners on the market today. It is highly recommended.

Runner-Up: Simmons Osborn Rocker and Recliner

Runner-Up
Simmons Osborn Rocker Recliner
4.6

Recommended For: Anyone weighing 400 pounds or less, who has enough space for it.

Check Latest Price Read Detailed Review

Simmons is the oldest furniture company on our list of finalists. Although they didn’t claim top honors in this category, they managed to secure both the #2 and #3 slots, which is no small feat! Let’s start our review of the Simmons Osborn by taking a closer look at the stats that define the model.

Tan Color, Simmons Osborn Power Rocker Recliner, in Left-Front Position

Chair Specifications

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 51” x 37” x 42”
  • Chair Weight: 150 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 400 pounds
  • Seat to Floor Height: 21”
  • Seat Width: 30”
  • Seat Depth: 22”

As you can see, this is a mammoth chair that’s capable of supporting a generous amount of user weight. While we love the size, the simple truth is that it might be too big for some homes.

Wall Hugging

If you’re cramped for space, this chair is going to be a non-starter. That said, this chair does incorporate Wall Hugging technology into its design, so you’ll only need about 6” of space between the back of the chair and whatever wall you put it near.

Power vs Manual Configuration

Assuming space isn’t an issue for you, the Osborn rocker would make a fantastic addition to just about any home. First and foremost, it can pull double duty as both a rocker and a power recliner with an unlimited number of recline positions on offer, thanks to its powerful, quiet motor.

Note that you can, if you prefer, order a manual variant of the Osborn. If you do, you’ll lose out on some of the flexibility. In the place of an infinite number of recline positions, you’ll get a standard three-position recliner.

No Lay Flat Position

Also note that whichever variant you choose, the Osborn doesn’t lay completely flat. That’s not necessarily a deal-breaker, because if you have trouble getting a decent night’s sleep in your bed, the odds are good that you won’t want to lay perfectly flat in your recliner anyway. Even if that’s not the case, this chair lays close enough to flat that you’ll get a good night’s sleep.

Comfortable Block Foam Padding, Simmons Osborn Power Rocker Recliner, Tan

Wide Seat

Take another look at those basic stats. The seat width is incredible. It’s almost as wide as a loveseat! In fact, the seat is so wide that you’re not likely to be able to make comfortable use of both armrests simultaneously. The tradeoff is that when you recline back to go to sleep, the extra room will make the experience that much more comfortable.

Comfort

Where comfort is concerned, the Osborn features a mix of high-density block foam, poly fiberfill, and an array of individually wrapped comfort coil springs just like you find on high-quality mattresses.

It’s not quite as comfortable as memory foam, but the experience is delightful, regardless of what you’re using the chair for. You’ll be able to spend several hours each day in the chair without any discomfort.

Assembly

One thing we love about Simmons chairs is the fact that no matter what you buy from them, they will arrive at your door fully assembled. That’s fantastic in most cases but look again at the stats of this model. There’s no way the Osborn will fit through a standard door. The back will have to come off to get it inside and where you want it.

Fortunately, that’s easy to do, but given the size of the chair, we recommend having a trusty assistant on standby when the chair arrives to make the job easier. Unfortunately, White Glove service is not available for this model.

Our Verdict

We love almost everything about this chair. It’s big, it’s comfortable, and it’s useful for a variety of purposes. Whether you’re looking for a comfortable nursery chair, something to recover from surgery in, or you just want a new living room chair for lounging around in; the Osborn is an excellent choice. It’s well-deserving of the second-place spot on our list and one of the best recliner chairs to sleep in on the market today.

Value Pick: Simmons Cuddler

Value Pick
Simmons Jaguar Cuddler Recliner
4.5

Recommended For: Anyone. This is a great chair for couples who want to cuddle, or bigger, taller folks. An excellent sleeper recliner!

Check Availability Read Detailed Review

If the Simmons Osborn isn’t a good fit for you, whatever the reason, then the Simmons Cuddler might be a better fit for you. Like its cousin, the Osborn, this is a big piece of furniture, and unfortunately, it doesn’t have the benefit of Wall Hugger technology, so you’ll need even more space to use this one effectively. Check out the basic stats for this chair.

Mocha Color, Simmons Cuddler Recliner, in Left-Front Position

Chair Specifications

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 44” x 56” x 44”
  • Chair Weight: 106 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 400 pounds
  • Seat Width: 23”
  • Seat Depth: 21”
  • Seat to Floor Height: 21”

Although it’s somewhat lighter than the Osborn, it supports the same amount of user weight. It’s bigger overall, but the seat width isn’t nearly as wide. Even so, it’s exceptionally roomy, which makes it a great lounging, napping, or sleeping chair. You could even fit two smaller people in it if they snuggled close, thus the name of the model.

Recline Function

As a power recliner, this model offers infinite recline positions. Although it doesn’t lay completely flat, it does come close enough that you’ll have absolutely no difficulty finding a comfortable position to sleep through the night.

Comfort

The Cuddler is exceptionally well-padded, featuring a combination of high-density block foam, poly fiberfill, and a network of support springs. When reclining in this chair, the feeling is very similar to relaxing on a good-quality mattress. Add a blanket, and you’re ready for a delightful night’s sleep!

Comfortable Foam Padding, Simmons Cuddler Recliner, Mocha

Assembly

On top of that, it’s proudly made right here in the US of A, and if you decide to order one, it will arrive at your door fully assembled and ready for its first use.

We love that, but there’s a catch. It’s actually the same catch we mentioned when we were talking about the Osborn. Check out those dimensions again. There’s no way this chair will fit through your front door fully assembled. You’re going to have to take the back off to get it inside the house and into whatever room you want to place it in.

The good news on that front is that this chair is somewhat lighter than the Osborn. Even so, since White Glove Service is not available, you’ll probably want an assistant on standby when the chair arrives to make things a little easier.

Our Verdict

The chair has incredible production values and is built to last. If you buy one of these, you can count on it delivering years of reliable service. While it’s not quite as versatile as the Osborn, it’s an outstanding second choice if the Osborn proves to be an unworkable choice for you for any reason.

La-Z-Boy Niagara Rocker Recliner

La-Z-Boy Niagara Recliner
4.5

Recommended For: Anyone up to 6’4” in height, weighing 300 pounds or less.

Check Latest Price Read Detailed Review

La-Z-Boy is one of the best-known names in the American furniture industry. Not only have they been in the business for a long time, but they’ve got a reputation for excellence that’s reflected both in the quality of their products and in their post-sales service and support.

The Niagara is an excellent example of their work. Let’s start with a review of the chair’s basic stats.

Fossil Color, La-Z-Boy Niagara Reclina-Rocker Recliner, in Front Position

Chair Specifications

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 39” x 41” x 41”
  • Chair Weight: 82 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 300 pounds
  • Seat to Floor Height: 19.5”
  • Seat Width: 19”
  • Seat Depth: 21.5”

This is a fairly sizeable (though surprisingly lightweight), stylish piece of furniture, offered in your choice of Fossil or Platinum-colored fabric. Both are neutral colors, which makes it easy for this attractive chair to blend seamlessly into your home’s existing décor scheme, whatever it might be.

Unfortunately, this model doesn’t incorporate Wall Hugging technology into its design, so you’ll need to be sure you’ve got at least 15” of space between the back of the chair and whatever wall you plan on placing it near.

Based on the stats above, we’d judge this to be a good chair for anyone up to about 6’4” in height, weighing 300 pounds or less, which makes it a good fit for the vast majority of the market.

Recline Function

Understand that this is a standard three-position manual recliner, with its default position, “TV Mode” and “Fully Reclined” mode available. That makes it less flexible than power recliners, which typically offer an infinite number of recline positions, but as long as you’re not too particular, those three positions will work well enough.

Recliner Position, La-Z-Boy Niagara Reclina-Rocker Recliner, Fossil

One detail worth mentioning though is the fact that you can recline the seat back without engaging the footrest, which makes it somewhat more versatile than a conventional three-position recliner.

Note though, that when fully reclined, the Niagara doesn’t lay completely flat, but it gets you about 80% of the way there, which is fine for most purposes. If you absolutely need a lay-flat recliner though, this isn’t the one you want.

Comfort

Where comfort is concerned, the Niagara delivers via a mix of block foam, poly fiberfill, and a supporting layer of springs which deliver a delightful seating, napping, or sleeping experience. Granted, it’s not next-level comfort like you get with chairs that offer memory foam or other advanced comfort materials, but it is wonderfully comfortable. You’ll have no difficulty snuggling into this chair and drifting off to sleep.

Rocking Relaxtion, La-Z-Boy Niagara Reclina-Rocker Recliner, Fossil

Rocker

In addition to being a high-quality, low-priced recliner, it also pulls double duty as a rocker, which makes it a great addition to any home nursery. Even better, this is one of only a handful of recliners on the market today that is built with ergonomic features woven into the mix. Here, you’ll find both lumbar support and well-implemented whole-back support.

Not only does that help make the chair even more comfortable, but it’s also a nice compliment to your home office chair, assuming you have one. It’s incredibly likely that whatever office chair you’re using sports ergonomic features, but most other home furnishings don’t. Kudos to La-Z-Boy for the inclusion. A nice touch, indeed.

Our Verdict

All that to say, it’s an exceptionally well-made, versatile piece of furniture, suitable for a variety of different purposes. The only (minor) drawbacks to the model are these:

  • It doesn’t offer any sort of onboard storage.
  • And it doesn’t arrive at your door, and sadly, White Glove service is unavailable, so you’ll want to have an assistant close at hand for when the chair arrives.

Neither of those is a deal-breaker though, and given the modest price this chair is being offered at, it’s an excellent choice for just about anyone. As long as you don’t need to lay perfectly flat, it’s one of the best recliners to sleep in for the money.

Ashley Ludden Rocker and Recliner

Ashley Ludden Contemporary Rocker Recliner
4.5

Recommended For: Anyone who weighs less than 350 pounds (the swivel option will support users weighing up to 250 pounds).

Check Latest Price Read Detailed Review

The Ashley Ludden is one of the most versatile pieces of furniture on the market today, offered by a company with a history of excellence in the American furniture market. Not only that, but it’s a good-looking chair, offered in four different colors, which makes it easy for this chair to blend in seamlessly with the rest of your home’s décor scheme, no matter what it might be.

Cocoa Color, Ashley Furniture Signature Design - Ludden Rocker Recliner, in Front Position

Chair Specifications

Before we get into specifics though, here are the basic stats that define this model:

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 40” x 43” x 43”
  • Chair Weight: 94 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 350 pounds (250 pounds for the swivel variant)
  • Seat to Floor Height: 20”
  • Seat Width: 24”
  • Seat Depth: 21”

This model isn’t quite big enough to count as a big and tall chair. The relatively lightweight and maximum supported weight values don’t support it, but it’s definitely a delightfully overstuffed chair. Even better, you can get yours in either power or manual configurations, and on a standard or swiveling base. Be aware, however, that if you order the swivel base, it will significantly reduce the amount of weight the chair can support.

Even so, counting the color options, that gives you a dozen different configurations to choose from, which is impressive.

Unfortunately, none of the Ludden options incorporate Wall Hugging technology into their design, so you’ll need to place the chair about 20” from whatever wall you plan on setting it near.

Power vs Manual

If you choose the manual option, you’ll be getting a standard three-position recliner. If you go with the power option, you’ll have an unlimited number of recline options available. Whichever you choose, at the Ludden’s maximum angle of recline, the chair will lay about 80% flat

While it doesn’t lay completely flat, that’s good enough for the vast majority of the market, and certainly, enough to get a decent night’s sleep. After all, if you have a condition like sleep apnea or are recovering from a surgery, it may be outright impossible to get a good night’s sleep while lying flat on your back.

Recliner Footrest, Ashley Furniture Signature Design - Ludden Rocker Recliner, Cocoa

Comfort

On the comfort front, the Ludden features a wonderfully soft pillowed upholstery covering generous amounts of block foam and poly fiberfill, supported by a system of steel springs. While it’s not the most comfortable chair we’ve ever had the pleasure of sitting in, it does offer a spectacularly relaxing seating experience.

It gets better though because this is one of the few recliners on the market today that offers ergonomic supports! Both the lumbar support system and the chair’s whole-back support are expertly implemented, both of which enhance the chair’s comfort.

Our Verdict

So, it’s a rocker, it’s a recliner, it lays mostly flat, and is comfortable enough to get a good night’s sleep in, and you can get yours in a dozen different configurations, counting the Ludden’s color options. That’s pretty spectacular, making it an easy chair to love.

The only real drawbacks are these:

  • The chair has no storage pocket.
  • The power recliner variants could benefit from a battery backup system.
  •  And we’d love it if the company offered White Glove Service to make the setup process hands-free.

None of those are deal-breakers, however, and this is a superb chair — one of the best reclining chairs for sleeping on the market today.

La-Z-Boy Calvin Recliner Rocker

La-Z-Boy Calvin PowerReclineXR
4.5

Recommended For: Anyone who wants a strong and reliable recliner.

Check Availability Read Detailed Review

This is La-Z-Boy’s second entry on our list of finalists, and the company needs no introduction. As we said earlier, just about everybody living in the United States has at least heard the name. That’s because they have an outstanding reputation in the American furniture market and make great products, the Calvin Rocking Recliner being no exception.

Granite Color, La-Z-Boy Calvin PowerReclineXR Reclina-Rocker Recliner, in Front Position

Chair Specifications

Here’s a quick breakdown of the chair’s basic stats:

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 39.5” x 41” x 41”
  • Chair Weight: 80 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 300 pounds
  • Seat Depth: 21”
  • Seat Width: 18”
  • Seat to Floor Height: 20.5”

As you can see, this is a surprisingly lightweight chair, but despite that, it’s capable of supporting an impressive amount of user weight. The seat width is a little on the narrow side compared to other recliners on our list of finalists but both overall, the chair is built to appeal to a broad cross-section of the market.

It doesn’t incorporate Wall Hugger technology, but it’s also not an enormous piece of furniture, so unless space is just super cramped at your house, it should be possible to find a permanent home for this model.

Comfort

Comfort-wise, this chair is a delight, being padded with generous amounts of block foam supported by a network of springs. Granted, it’s not next-level comfort, but it is a joy to sit or sleep in. Although the Calvin didn’t score quite as well as the La-Z-Boy Niagara, it is slightly more comfortable, making this the best lazy boy recliner for sleeping on the market today.

Recline Function

As a power recliner, it also offers an infinite number of possible recline positions, though note that there are no presets, so you’ll have to hold the recline button down until the chair is in the position you want it. That’s not a huge issue, as the motor is powerful, quiet, and offers smooth recline action.

Full Recliner Position, La-Z-Boy Calvin PowerReclineXR Reclina-Rocker Recliner, Granite

When fully reclined, the Calvin won’t lay you completely flat, but it certainly comes close enough that you won’t have any issues getting comfortable and drifting off to sleep. Besides, depending on why you’re in the market for a sleeper recliner, laying perfectly flat may be an impractical way for you to sleep in any case.

We were somewhat disappointed by the fact that this chair doesn’t offer any type of advanced seating option, so no Zero-G or Trendelenburg positions. But, the Calvin makes up for that by providing exceptional lumbar support and very well-implemented whole-back support, making it one of the very few recliners to offer ergonomic features. Kudos to La-Z-Boy on that front!

Recliner Footrest, La-Z-Boy Calvin PowerReclineXR Reclina-Rocker Recliner, Granite

Extras

On top of that, you’ll find a handy USB charging port on the chair so you can keep your favorite device fully changed while you’re spending time in it.

One of the more common failings of power recliners is the fact that while lift chairs almost always offer a battery backup system, power recliners rarely do. While the standard Calvin doesn’t come with one, it is an optional feature you can add if you order direct from the company’s website. That’s a great move and a high-value addition to the chair. Again, kudos to La-Z-Boy!

Color and Variant Options

Finally, we should note that this model is available in two different colors and that La-Z-Boy makes several variants. So if the stats above aren’t an exact fit for you but you like the chair in general, be sure to visit the company’s website direct to see if there’s a Calvin variant that’s closer to what you’re looking for.

Our Verdict

All things considered then; this is a great, versatile, comfortable piece of furniture you’ll be proud to own. It’s made right here in the United States and offered by one of the most respected companies doing business in the market today. We love it, and we think you will too. Recommended!

Catnapper makes a second appearance on this portion of our list with the Cloud 12, a superb, basic three-position rocker and recliner. While it doesn’t offer anything in the way of extras, it’s a great-looking chair, available in a trio of colors that make it easy to blend in with your existing home décor scheme.

Sage Fabric Color, Catnapper Cloud 12 6541-2 Manual Chaise Rocker Recliner Chair, in Left-Front Position

Chair Specifications

Before we go any deeper than that though, let’s have a quick look at the chair’s core stats:

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 44” x 45” x 42”
  • Chair Weight: 115 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 300 pounds
  • Seat Width: 21”
  • Seat Depth: 23”
  • Seat to Floor Height: 21”

As you can see, this is a big piece of furniture that will require a significant amount of space in whatever room you decide to put it in. Its design does not incorporate Wall Hugger technology, either, so you’ll need even more space to use this chair to its fullest potential.

The Cloud 12 would be a fabulous addition to a nursery if you have a new baby or are expecting one (and again, provided you can fit it comfortably into the room). With a wider-than-average seat and rocking capabilities, it provides a great platform for baby feeding time and is more than comfortable enough to give weary parents a place to sleep if they want to stay close to the crib.

Comfort

The comfort system is comprised of delightfully comfortable upholstery, stretched over a blend of block foam and poly fiberfill, supported by a network of more than fifty individually wrapped comfort coil springs. While the level of comfort provided by this system isn’t quite as good as memory foam, it is incredibly comfortable. It’s easy to see how this chair got its name!

Recliner Footrest, Catnapper Cloud 12 6541-2 Manual Chaise Rocker Recliner Chair, Sage Fabric

Recline Function

In addition to being a well-padded rocker, it’s also a manual, three-position recliner that lays almost completely flat when fully reclined. You won’t have any difficulty sleeping through the night in this chair.

Even if you’re not interested in sleeping in the chair, you’ll find it to be surprisingly versatile. Although it is just a standard three-position manual recliner, it does give you the ability to recline the seat back without engaging the footrest, which gives you a few more options where recline angles and seating configurations are concerned.

White Glove Service

As with most of the chairs on this list, the Cloud 12 doesn’t come fully assembled, but the company offers White Glove Service. So, if you’d rather not deal with getting the chair ready for first use, you certainly don’t have to.

Our Verdict

Whatever your reason for being in the market for a rocking recliner, the Cloud 12 is an exceptional choice for lounging, napping, or even sleeping through the night. Even better, it’s expertly crafted using high-quality materials and is built to provide years of reliable service. It’s one of the best chairs to sleep in on the market today. You won’t be disappointed.

Check Latest Price Read Detailed Review

We love Flash Furniture! They’re a smallish brand and much less well-known than the heavy hitters in the industry, but they make regular appearances on our roundup reviews, and the Contemporary Rocker and Recliner is a solid example of their work, well-deserving of a spot on this list.

Softsuede Fudge, Flash Furniture Contemporary Softsuede Fudge Microfiber Rocker Recliner, in Front Position

Chair Specifications

Before we tell you more about it, let’s have a quick look at this model’s basic stats:

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 67” x 39” x 48”
  • Chair Weight: 90 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 250 pounds
  • Seat Height: 21”
  • Seat Width: 17”
  • Seat Depth: 21”

The first thing that jumps out at us is the fact that this is a surprisingly big chair. Even more surprising, though, is the fact that despite its impressive dimensions, it’s also very lightweight. Because of that, it doesn’t support a ton of user weight, and the seat width is a bit disappointing, at a scant 17.”

That, unfortunately, limits the chair’s appeal. Assuming you weigh less than 250 pounds though, and that the seat width isn’t an issue for you, you’ll find this chair to be a good option and an excellent addition to almost any home.

We should also add that the chair isn’t as big as it first appears. It’s like a giant fluffy cat. All that fur on the cat makes it look big, but once you start petting it, you find the cat’s really not all that huge after all.

Comfort

In this case, the chair’s size is a bit of an illusion made possible by the presence of generous amounts of padding, which is a combination of conventional block foam and poly fiberfill. Since the padding is present in such abundance and the chair is upholstered in “Softsuede” fabric, it is a delight to sit or sleep in.

Recliner Position, Flash Furniture Contemporary Softsuede Fudge Microfiber Rocker, Softsuede Fudge

Rocking Function

As its name indicates, it’s a rocking recliner, but unfortunately, you can’t rock while reclining. There are a couple of chairs on the market that are capable of this, but the Flash Furniture offering is unfortunately not one of them.

In addition to providing smooth rocking action, it’s also a standard three-position manual recliner, allowing you to sit up straight, partially recline into “TV Mode” (which is also great for napping), or fully recline. When fully reclined, the chair doesn’t lay completely flat, but it comes close enough that you can get a decent night’s sleep in it if you like.

Recliner Adjustment, Flash Furniture Contemporary Softsuede Fudge Microfiber Rocker, Softsuede Fudge

No Extras

While there are no extras on offer (though you can order this model in a modest selection of colors), this is a surprisingly capable chair, offered at a price that will make you smile.

Assembly Required

Sadly, it won’t arrive at your doorstep pre-assembled, and White Glove Service is not available, so you’ll want to make sure you have a trusty assistant on hand to help out on that front. The process isn’t complicated, and it won’t take very long to get the chair ready for first use.

The only other thing to mention here is that this is a lightly built chair, so it’s not designed to stand up to the rigors of heavy daily use for years on end. Then again, since it’s such an inexpensive chair when it wears out after a few years of use, it’s easy enough to replace it with something else as your needs evolve.

Our Verdict

While it’s not the best recliner for sleeping on the market today, it’s an excellent, comfortable budget option that will serve you well in the shorter to medium term.

ProLounger Wall Hugger Recliner

We regard the little ProLounger Wall Hugger Recliner is a hidden gem on the market. It’s delightfully low-priced and surprisingly capable. Although the ProLounger is imported from China, it’s made of surprisingly high-quality materials and the production quality is a cut above what you usually see from low-cost imports.

Chair Specifications

Before we get into the specifics, let’s start as we have previously; with a review of the chair’s basic stats:

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 37.8” x 34.8” x 39.5”
  • Chair Weight: 66.1 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 300 pounds
  • Seat to Floor Height: 18.5”
  • Seat Width: 17”
  • Seat Depth: 21”
Khaki Microfiber, ProLounger Wall Hugger Recliner Chair, in Front Position

A couple of things jump out right away when looking at these numbers. First, compared to most of the other chairs on our list of finalists, this isn’t a huge chair. Even if you’re a little cramped for space at your house, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a permanent home for the chair.

The ProLounger is also built with Wall Hugger technology incorporated into its design, which makes space needed even less of an issue.

Unfortunately, since it’s not a huge chair, its market appeal is somewhat limited. With a seat width of just 17” there are some people who simply aren’t going to fit into it, even though it’s got a fairly standard 300-pound weight limit.

Recline Function

Assuming that’s not an issue for you, if you decide to order one, what you’ll be getting is a standard three-position recliner. You’ll be able to sit upright, partially recline into “TV Watching Mode” which is also great for napping, or fully recline which is a good position for sleeping.

Full Recliner Position, ProLounger Wall Hugger Recliner Chair, Khaki

Note that when fully reclined, the chair doesn’t lay completely flat, but it does come close enough that you won’t have any difficulty getting a good night’s sleep in the chair.

Comfort

That comes down to the fact that despite its modest price, the ProLounger features a surprisingly advanced comfort system that utilizes a combination of block foam, poly fiberfill, and individually wrapped comfort coils. The result is delightfully comfortable, and easily on par with much more expensive chairs on the market today.

Recliner Adjustment, ProLounger Wall Hugger Recliner Chair, Khaki

No Extras & Assembly Required

While the ProLounger doesn’t offer any type of onboard storage or extras, and White Glove Service is not available, so when the chair arrives at your door, in a single giant box, you’ll want to be sure to have a trusty assistant on hand to help you put it together.

The assembly process is straightforward and shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. After that, you’re ready to sit down and start enjoying your new favorite chair!

Our Verdict

The ProLounger isn’t perfect. It sticks strictly to the basics and doesn’t try to do too much. It’s also got a seat that’s too narrow for the chair to have mass-market appeal. If the measurements aren’t an issue for you though, it’s a fantastic budget option that’s well worth considering.

There are lots of recliner chairs you can sleep in on the market today, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more capable model for the money.

Lifestyle Power Recliner

Lifestyle Power Recliner

Recommended For: Anyone 5’ to 6’ tall weighing 250 pounds or less.

Check Latest Price Read Detailed Review

Although all of the chairs we’ve talked about to this point are excellent, we didn’t feel this portion of our review would be complete without giving a quick shout-out to the Lifestyle Power Recliner. It’s sold by a smaller, off-brand that imports their wares from China for resale here. It’s a surprisingly good recliner and a delightfully inexpensive power option.

Specification Stats, Lifestyle Power Recliner, Taupe

Chair Specifications

Here are the basic stats that define this model:

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 39” x 40.5” x 40”
  • Chair Weight: 77 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 250 pounds
  • Seat to Floor Height: 20”
  • Seat Width: 22”
  • Seat Depth: 20”

As you can see, it’s a lightweight chair and not capable of supporting a ton of weight. So, while it’s fine for shorter to average-sized people with light to medium builds, it’s going to be a non-starter for taller or heavier folks.

Even so, given its smallish size (for a recliner) and it has Wall Hugger technology incorporated into its design, finding a permanent home for this chair should be a simple matter, even if space is at a premium at your house.

Comfort

The chair fares reasonably well on the comfort front, but it relies on block foam for padding. There’s a generous amount of it, so it provides a comfortable seating and sleeping experience. But in the longer term, due to the lower quality of the padding being used, it’s going to start sagging and generally losing its ability to hold its shape.

Taupe Color, Lifestyle Power Recliner, in Front Position

Recline Option

Also, despite being a power recliner, this model doesn’t allow you an infinite number of recline angles. You’re limited to three presets which correspond to the seating options offered by conventional, manual three-position recliners. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, and for the money, it’s certainly not a deal-breaker, but it is something to be mindful of.

The bottom line is that this is a good budget option. If you don’t have a ton of money to spend, but you want a good looking power recliner that will lay flat (or close enough to flat to give you a decent night’s sleep), and you just need something for a couple of years, this is a great choice.

Extras & Assembly Required

In fact, it even has one “extra” on offer in the form of a handy USB charging port so while you’re spending time in your chair, you can keep your favorite smart device fully charged.

This model doesn’t come assembled, and White Glove Service is unavailable, but given its lightweight and the simplicity of its design, the assembly process is quick and painless.

Our Verdict

Is it a perfect chair? Sadly, it is not, but again, for the money, it’s a solid choice for anyone looking for a short-term seating/napping/sleeping solution. On that basis, we provisionally recommend it.

Our Pick: Windermere Burton Power Lift Recliner

Our Pick
Windermere Burton NM1650 Power Lift Recliner
4.6

Recommended For: Anyone, but it’s an especially good fit for taller users.

Check Latest Price Read Detailed Review

Windermere Burton is a legendary company in the industry. A subsidiary of Mega Motion, which is owned by Pride Mobility, the company has a stellar pedigree and a longstanding reputation for building quality lift chairs. It comes as no surprise then that the company wound up producing the chair that would ultimately become our top pick in this category.

Chair Specifications

Before we get into the specific features this chair brings to the table, though, let’s begin by doing a quick review of the core stats that define the model:

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 40” x 38” x 47”
  • Chair Weight: 125 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 375 pounds
  • Seat Depth: 25”
  • Seat Width: 20”
  • Seat to Floor Height: 20”
Nutmeg Fabric, Windermere Burton with Trendelenburg, in Left-Front Position

The first thing that jumps out at us about these numbers is the seat depth. At a whopping 25”, this chair was clearly designed with taller people in mind. Shorter people who sit all the way back in the seat won’t be able to bend their legs properly over the side of the chair.

Having said that, the maximum supported weight is decent, but not high enough to make it a true big and tall chair.

Assuming the measurements are a good match, you’ll find a lot to like about this design. It’s attractively styled and looks as comfortable and inviting as it feels when you walk up to it and have a seat.

Comfort

The Windermere Burton utilizes a mix of block foam and poly fiberfill, combined with a comfort coil system for added support, making the cushioning of the chair a lot like the cushioning you find on most high-quality mattresses on the market today. Granted, the comfort isn’t next level, like you’d get if the chair utilized memory foam or other advanced comfort materials, but it is delightful.

Recline Function

Comfort, however, encompasses more than one dimension, and this chair has a lot to offer besides generous padding. For one thing, the chair offers unlimited recline angles, because you can simply use the controls to tweak the angle to your liking.

Some people like having the cone-touch convenience of presets, but honestly, it doesn’t take much just to hold the button down and get the chair where you want it, so we don’t see the absence of presets as being a huge deal.

Storage, Windermere Burton with Trendelenburg, Nutmeg Fabric

Trendelenburg Seating Position

The chair also offers a Trendelenburg seating position, which reclines you to a position where you’re flat on your back with your feet elevated 15-30 degrees above your head. This is superb for people who suffer from poor circulation, as well as anyone who is recovering from a surgery of any type.

Personally, we would have preferred to see one or more Zero-G seating positions in place of Trendelenburg, but they offer similar benefits, so this serves as a decent substitute.

This model has two motors: one to drive the recline function and the other that drives the lift function. Both are powerful, quiet, and offer smooth action.

Storage and Extras

The Windermere Burton features a total of three storage pockets, all of them generously sized. That’s enough to give you plenty of room to store your favorite books, magazines, and other assorted supplies you might need while spending several hours in your new favorite chair.

Remote Control, Windermere Burton with Trendelenburg, Nutmeg Fabric
Battery Backup

In addition to that, this model offers a simple, effective battery backup system, which is a lot more important than you might first think. Here’s why:

Most people who invest in a good lift chair do so because they struggle to get their feet back under them if they’ve been sitting for an extended period. The lift function provides the boost they need, and it’s all good.

Except of course, for when the lights go out. In that case, if you’re reclining when the power fails and you don’t have a chair with a battery backup, you’re stuck until somebody comes along and finds you to give you an assist.

The battery backup solves that. It gives you a greater degree of freedom and independence, allowing you to get up without assistance. Hopefully, you’ll never need it. The first time you do, though, it’ll become your favorite feature of the chair’s design.

USB Port

Finally, this model offers a handy USB charging port so you’ll be able to keep your favorite device fully charged while sitting in your chair. That gives you a whole world of entertainment options, at your fingertips.

Our Verdict

It’s loaded with extras, it’s delightfully comfortable, and it offers an advanced seating position with genuine therapeutic benefits. Those are all good things, but again, it’s worth mentioning that the seat depth marks this as a chair designed for taller people.

If you’re on the short side, it’s going to be difficult to sit properly in the chair, although even then, you’ll find sleeping in it to be a delight. This is a superb product, and we absolutely recommend it. A nearly perfect sleeper recliner.

Serta Hampton 872 Perfect Comfort Lift Chair
4.5

Recommended For: Anyone between 5’4” and 6’4,” weighing 375 pounds or less.

Check Availability Read Detailed Review

Our second-place chair is offered by another company with a long, proud history in the American furniture industry. Serta is best known for its world-class mattresses, but the company makes a whole range of furniture, including this impressive lift chair.

Given that the chair is designed for long-term sitting, napping, and sleeping through the night as an alternative to a bed, Serta’s mattress expertise is invaluable, and they put their experience to good use in this design. Before we get into the particulars, we’ll start with a review of the core stats that define the model.

Walnut Brown, Serta Hampton with Infinite Position Dual Motor, in Left-Front Position

Chair Specifications

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 32” x 37.25” x 41.5”
  • Chair Weight: 153 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 375 pounds
  • Seat to Floor Height: 20”
  • Seat Width: 21”
  • Seat Width: 21”

As was the case with our first-place winner, this is a hefty piece of furniture, and it doesn’t incorporate Wall Hugger technology into its design, so if space is at a premium at your house, it might be a struggle to find a permanent home for this chair.

If the chair’s size is not an issue for you, and the other measurements are a good fit, you’ll find a lot to like here.

The Serta Hampton is a relatively unassuming design. It’s not unattractive, the design team simply put a greater emphasis of function over form, and given the dimensions above, it’s well-suited to users ranging in height from 5’4” to about 6’4”. That, combined with its weight range, makes it a good fit for the vast bulk of the market, although big and tall users will have to look elsewhere.

Although the chair isn’t flashy or showy, lurking beneath the upholstery, you’ll find a well-made piece of furniture. The frame is composed of hardwoods, and marine-grade plywood and the lift mechanism is solid steel. This chair was built to last. With proper care, it should provide you with years of reliable, mostly hassle-free service.

Recline Function

As a power recliner, the Hampton offers an infinite number of recline options, although you’ll have to tweak the settings to get the angle you want. There are no pre-set, pre-defined positions on offer. That’s not a deal-breaker, but if you’re looking for one-touch convenience, you won’t find it here.

Household Uses, Serta Hampton with Infinite Position Dual Motor, Walnut Brown

Comfort

Aesthetics and production quality are all well and good, but the thing that most people who buy a lift chair are interested in is comfort. It probably won’t surprise anyone to know that given Serta’s experience in the mattress market, the Hampton delivers in style where comfort is concerned.

You won’t find any block foam here; the chair is padded with gel-infused memory foam, which makes it one of, if not the most comfortable recliner to sleep in on the market today.

There are two drawbacks to be aware of, however. First, unlike our top pick, this chair does not feature any advanced seating positions, so there’s no Zero-G or Trendelenburg seating option available.

Second, one of the most persistent complaints about the Hampton is that although the motors are quiet, they’re also somewhat slower than the average. It’s not a huge deal, but it does take a little longer for this chair to recline to your preferred angle or to help you to your feet when you engage the lift function.

Remote Control, Serta Hampton with Infinite Position Dual Motor, Walnut Brown

Assembly Required

Finally, be aware that the chair does not arrive at your doorstep fully assembled. It’s not difficult to put together, but if you suffer from some kind of a mobility issue, it may be a bit daunting.

The two best solutions here would be to either have a trusty assistant on standby the day the chair arrives or to pay a little extra for Serta’s White Glove service, which makes getting the chair ready for its first use an entirely hands-free process.

Storage and Extras

In addition to being delightfully comfortable, the Serta Hampton has three extras on offer: A generously sized storage pocket, a battery backup system, and a USB port. All of these enhance the value of the chair, and all three are great additions.

From a practical perspective, the battery backup is the most valuable, but ample storage room for supplies and a USB port for keeping your favorite device fully charged are super handy features that make the chair easier and more convenient to use, especially if you plan on spending several hours of each day sitting in it.

Our Verdict

The Serta Hampton is not just a recliner you can sleep in, it’s the most comfortable recliner in its class, and it only narrowly missed being our top pick. If you value comfort over advanced seating options and aesthetics, this is a superb choice.

Value Pick: Catnapper Burns Power Lift Recliner

Value Pick
Catnapper Burns 4847 Lift Chair
4.4

Recommended For: Anyone up to 400 pounds who is looking for a great, basic power lift recliner. If you’re looking for tons of extras, this one’s not a good fit.

Check Latest Price Read Detailed Review

Catnapper is another of the titans operating in the American furniture industry, and they’ve claimed the third-place position in our power lift roundup with their amazing Catnapper Burns Power Lift Recliner. Before we get into the specifics, we’ll start as we have previously, by reviewing the basic stats that define the model.

Ash Fabric, Catnapper Burns 4847 Power Dual with 400 lb Capacity, in Left-Front Position

Chair Specifications

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 44” x 39” x 42”
  • Chair Weight: 138 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 400 pounds
  • Seat to Floor Height: 20”
  • Seat Width: 22”
  • Seat Depth: 22”

As with the other models we’ve talked about so far, this is a big piece of furniture, so it may prove somewhat difficult to find a home for it if you live in a smaller house or apartment. Assuming that’s not an issue, this is a great choice for bigger, taller folks, with the highest amount of supported user weight in its class.

Aesthetics & Design

It’s not the most attractive chair in the world, but it’s certainly not ugly. Actually, its unobtrusive nature, combined with the fact that it’s available in a modest selection of colors makes it super easy to blend the chair in with your home’s existing décor scheme.

So far, the chairs we’ve talked about in this section have all had a little something extra — either a next-level comfort system or an advanced seating position on offer – something. The Catnapper Burns focuses on the basics, and every feature the chair offers is executed brilliantly. It does not, however, have a huge number of extras on offer.

Basil Fabric, Catnapper Burns 4847 Power Dual with 400 lb Capacity, in Right-Front Position

Recline Function

It has two powerful, quiet motors that offer smooth reclining and lift action, an infinite number of recline angles possible. It also lays flat, providing a good platform for a decent night’s sleep, helped along by the presence of comfort coils supporting block foam and poly fiberfill.

Extras

Where extras are concerned, it offers a battery backup system and a generous amount of built-in storage in the form of a pair of side pockets.

A couple of things you won’t find on this model though, are a USB charging port or any type of advanced seating position, making this a somewhat basic chair that doesn’t offer as many bells and whistles as some of the other models we’ve talked about in this section.

Our Verdict

The biggest single point of differentiation between this model and the others on our list of finalists is the fact that it supports slightly more user weight. If the weight limits of the other chairs on our list of finalists are problematic for you, this slight increase might be enough to push this one to the top of your personal list.

While it’s not best in class, this model is a case study of well-rounded excellence. It’s not the most exciting model on the market, but it’s a great all-around power lift chair, proudly made right here in the US of A. It won’t disappoint. A great sleeper recliner design.

UltraComfort isn’t as big or well-established as most of the others that made their way into our list of finalists, which speaks volumes about its quality. Since the brand doesn’t have the same heft as Serta, Catnapper, and the rest, they’ve got to work that much harder to make up the difference.

Their work paid off, as evidenced by their respectable fourth-place ranking in our review. This is an impressive, American-made piece of furniture that will serve you well. Before we take a closer look at what it brings to the table, let’s start with a stats review.

Rustic Color, UltraComfort UC546-JPT with Eclipse, in Left-Front Position

Chair Specifications

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 33.5” x 36” x 47” (82” when fully reclined)
  • Chair Weight: 138 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 375 pounds
  • Seat Width: 23”
  • Seat Depth: 21”
  • Seat to Floor Height: 21.5”

Like the other power sleeper recliners we’ve talked about so far, this is a hefty piece of furniture that will tend to dominate smaller rooms.

Also, like the others we’ve highlighted, it doesn’t incorporate Wall Hugger technology into its design, so you’ll need to place it quite some distance from whatever wall you plan to place it near, which means that it will take up even more space in the room you choose to place it in.

It’s a reasonably attractive piece of furniture though and offered in a modest selection of colors (see our full review for the specifics), so you won’t have any particular difficulty getting the chair to blend seamlessly with your existing home décor scheme.

Despite its impressive size, this isn’t a great chair for bigger, taller folks. Not only is the weight limit too low to support that idea, the chair’s other dimensions mark it as being most appropriate for users ranging in height from about 5’3” to about 5’10”. If you’re much taller than that, one of the other models on our list of finalists will almost certainly be a better fit for you.

Zero Gravity Position, UltraComfort UC546-JPT with Eclipse, Rustic Color

If you are especially interested in this model, however, note that the company offers this chair in a variety of size variants, so if this is the one you decide you’ve got to have, you can probably find it on the company’s website.

Eclipse Technology

One of the key features this chair offers is its proprietary “Eclipse Technology,” which, based on their description, is a seating position that gives you a feeling of weightlessness.

In practice, this is mostly the same thing as standard Zero-G seating, but with one important difference. Eclipse Technology provides the experience while keeping the chair in a constant, gentle rocking motion. It’s an interesting feature, but we’re not convinced that it’s different enough to warrant all the time and R&D dollars spent on its development, but your mileage may vary. If you love it, then you’ll love this chair!

Recline Options

The remote offers three preset seating positions, which align with the standard three reclining positions you find on manual recliners: Upright, TV Mode, and Full Recline. On top of that, the buttons on the remote allow you to veer from the presets and set your own recline angle precisely.

We love that both options are available. One-touch convenience is great, but paired with infinite recline angles is even better. The only thing this chair is missing is a memory function that would allow you to save your preferred settings.

Comfort

It’s also a delightfully comfortable chair, featuring a comfort system that mirrors those we’ve talked about previously: Block foam, supported by a system of comfort coils. UltraComfort does a great job on that front, and the chair makes a delightful platform for sitting, napping, and even sleeping through the night.

Technical Details, UltraComfort UC546-JPT with Eclipse, Rustic Color

Extras

Unfortunately, the chair does come up a bit short where storage is concerned. The single pocket on offer is a bit undersized for our tastes, but the battery backup is well-designed and effective.

Of particular interest, the company offers a variant of this chair that offers both heat and massage functionality, which makes it unique among our list of finalists. Granted, the massage function is quite basic, relying on a network of stationary massage heads that render a simple vibration-style massage.

Still, some massage is better than none, and massage plus heat makes it even better!

Assembly

Again, like the other top contenders we’ve talked about so far, the UltraComfort does not come assembled, but the assembly process is fairly simple, and if you’d rather not contend with it yourself, White Glove service is available.

Our Verdict

Bear in mind that if you’re not brand conscious and remove the Brand Reliability metric from consideration, this chair places second, and only narrowly loses to our overall top pick. That speaks volumes about the quality of the product UltraComfort has created here. In the world of power sleep recliners, this one’s a hidden gem. We recommend it.

Med Lift 5555

5555 Full Sleeper Lift chair by Med-Lift

Recommended For: Users between 5’6” and 6’4,” weigh 375 pounds or less, and are looking for a durable sleeper recliner with lift functionality.

Check Latest Price Read Detailed Review

We didn’t feel this portion of our review would be complete without giving a shout-out to Med Lift for their impressive 5555.

Med Lift isn’t a big company. They don’t have the reach, reputation, and record of post-sales service and support that most of the other brands we’ve featured in this part of our roundup, but the 5555 is an awesome sleeper recliner and lift chair.

If none of the others we’ve mentioned to this point are what you’re looking for, this model is well worth consideration, and like all of the chairs that have made our list of finalists, this one has something special on offer that sets it apart from the rest of the pack.

Cabo Havanna Fabric, Med Lift 5555 Full Sleeper Lift Chair with Footrest, in Left-Front Position

Chair Specifications

Before we get into all that though, let’s run through the chair’s basic stats:

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 43” x 36” x 38”
  • Seat Width: 21”
  • Seat Depth: 21”
  • Seat to Floor Height: 21”
  • Chair Weight: 195 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 375 pounds

This is a strangely heavy chair, given that it only supports an average amount of user weight. On top of that, it’s a big piece of furniture, so the same thing we’ve said before about the struggle people with smaller homes or apartments have holds true here.

Assembly

In addition to that, since this chair doesn’t come assembled, and given the weight, you may want to spend a little extra for White Glove service, so you don’t have to deal with the assembly process at all.

Upholstery

It’s a sharp-looking, comfortable chair, offered in both fabric and leather upholstery variants. Of the two, we recommend the fabric option over the leather variant for the reasons we mentioned early on in this roundup.

Recliner TV Position, Med Lift 5555 Full Sleeper Lift Chair with Footrest, Cabo Havanna Fabric

Plus, it’s worth mentioning that Med Lift uses bonded leather, rather than genuine grain leather for their upholstery.

In addition to suffering the same basic limitations of grain leather, bonded leather is weaker structurally, and less supple because it’s made of leather scraps that have been fused together. After about a year of heavy use, it’ll start showing its age by peeling and cracking. Not good.

Recline Function

The 5555 focuses on the basics and implements them well. What you’re getting when you buy one of these is an incredibly solid, well-made infinite position lift recliner that features powerful, quiet motors, and three preset seating positions on the remote just like we described with the UltraComfort chair.

Comfort

It’s not quite as comfortable as the other models we’ve discussed so far, but it certainly offers a good seating or sleeping experience. It just relies more heavily on conventional block foam than the other options we’ve talked about. That’s one of the tradeoffs where this model is concerned: It doesn’t cost quite as much as our top picks, but the comfort system isn’t advanced.

Crypton Color, Med Lift 5555 Full Sleeper Lift Chair with Footrest, in Right-Front Position

Storage and Extras

The Med Lift 5555 comes with covers for the armrests and headrest, a single, generously sized storage compartment and a simple but effective battery backup system. All of that’s pretty standard, but this is the area where Med Lift truly shines.

If you go to the company’s page on Amazon, you’ll find that the company makes a wide range of companion products that work together beautifully with their lift chair.

Our recommendation is to buy the chair and use it for a month or two before seriously considering adding extras. Then, once you’ve got a feel for how you’re using it, you’ll have a better sense of what kinds of extras would be the best fit for you.

Our Verdict

Even without the extras, this is a well-designed chair and an exceptional value for the money, but it’s sure to be the top pick for people who like to use products with a lot of natural synergy between them — a very good sleep chair recliner with a lot to offer the right owner.

Other Options to Consider

Flash Furniture Kids Recliner with Cup Holder

Flash Furniture Microfiber Kids Recliner
4.1

Recommended For: A good-looking, fun, basic recliner for children under 90 pounds.

Check Latest Price Read Detailed Review

While this chair doesn’t fit neatly into the categories we defined at the start of this review, if you have a small child who, for whatever reason, is having difficulty sleeping in their bed and you’re looking for a good recliner that can serve as a napping chair, or even provide something that can be used to sleep through the night, it’s hard to beat the Flash Furniture Kids Recliner with Cup Holder.

It may be small, but it’s delightfully comfortable, and even better, it’s offered in an amazing array of fun colors and upholstery options, so you can almost certainly get it in your child’s favorite color.

While it doesn’t lay perfectly flat, it does recline far enough that your child can get a decent night’s sleep in it, and even better, it’s small size makes it easy to squeeze into whatever room your full-sized recliner occupies, which means you can sit next to your child and keep them company.

Chair Specifications

Blue Color, Flash Furniture Contemporary Blue Microfiber Kids Recliner with Cup Holder, in Front Position

For your reference, here are the core stats that define this model:

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 28” x 24.5” x 25” (39” when fully reclined)
  • Seat to Floor Height: 14.5”
  • Seat Width: 13.75”
  • Seat Depth: 12”
  • Chair Weight: 25 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 90 pounds

As you can see, based on these numbers, this isn’t a chair you’ll be buying for long term use. Your child is destined to outgrow this model fairly quickly but, if you need something like this, you need it, and given the modest price Flash offers this model at, it’s a great investment indeed.

It relies on conventional block foam for padding, and there’s a generous amount of it, which makes it delightfully comfortable. On top of that, it comes with a cup holder built into one armrest, which should reduce the number of spills you have to clean up.

Best of all, it arrives at your door fully assembled, so all you have to do is unbox it, decide where you want it, and invite your little one to have a seat. When bedtime rolls around, just add a warm, comfy blanket, and you’re all set!

The last option we wanted to bring to your attention is a little off the beaten track, but it’s such an interesting chair with such an intriguing mix of capabilities that we couldn’t resist including it here. Before we start talking about the features this chair brings to the table though, let’s review the chair’s core statistics.

Tan Color, Dorel Living Padded Dual Massage Recliner, in Left-Front Position

Chair Specifications

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 41” x 36” x 40”
  • Chair Weight: 75 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 250 pounds
  • Seat Depth: 21”
  • Seat Width: 18”
  • Seat to Floor Height: 21”

The first thing that jumps out at us when we look at these numbers is that it’s definitely a niche product. With a seat width that’s not as wide as many of the other products we’ve looked at and a modest amount of supported weight, this chair will simply be too small for many prospective buyers to use.

Assuming that’s not an issue for you, and you’re no taller than 6’, here’s what you have to look forward to if you decide to buy this model.

The first thing to note about Dorel Living’s offering is that it’s a combination rocker and recliner, which would make it a great, low cost addition to most any home nursery. The recline function is manual, controlled by a simple lever on the side of the chair.

It comes with the standard three positions you find on most manual recliners, allowing you to sit upright, recline partially, or recline fully. When fully reclined, the chair lays almost flat – not completely, but close enough that you’ll be able to sleep through the night in comfort.

Room Decoration, Dorel Living Padded Dual Massage Recliner, Tan

The chair is generously padded, but given its modest price, it relies on block foam for comfort. You won’t find any memory foam, comfort coils, or other advanced comfort systems here. Even so, there’s enough block foam that it does provide a delightful seating, lounging or sleeping space.

It should be pointed out though, that this is a lightly constructed Chinese import. This isn’t the chair you want if you’re looking to buy something that will stand up to the rigors of heavy daily use for years on end.

At its price point, it’s the kind of chair you buy to provide a few years of service, and then you retire it and either replace it with something else or get rid of it and do something else with the space it once occupied.

So far, all of that sounds rather lackluster, but this chair has a surprise that may delight you. It offers a surprisingly robust vibration-style massage with lumbar heat!

Granted, there are limitations here, because the massage is rendered by way of a series of stationary massage heads which simply vibrate in place, but this model does offer you some ability to control and customize the massage.

There are heads in both the seat and the seatback, and switches on the side of the chair allow you to activate them independently. On top of that, the switch allows you two different intensity settings, low or high.

The heat function is tied to the massage function, so you can’t have one without the other, but that’s not at all uncommon.

Recliner Position, Dorel Living Padded Dual Massage Recliner, Tan

Proper massage chairs are expensive, with the best ones often running as much as a decent used car. While this little chair can’t hold a candle to those kinds of chairs, it does provide real therapeutic benefit and is offered for a song.

If you’re in the market for a chair that can serve as a rocker, a napping or sleeping recliner and a basic massager, all in one delightfully low-cost package, this chair is hard to beat. Again, it’s certainly not for everyone, but for the right user, this chair is close to perfect!

Final Thoughts on the Best Recliners for Sleeping in 2024

So, what is the best recliner to sleep in? Ultimately, that depends on what you’re looking for. As we said at the start, when we began our search, we broke the sleeper recliner market into two segments: Chairs with lift functionality and chairs without that feature. After an exhaustive search, we declared a winner for each category, and we absolutely stand by our two top picks.

In our view, the best recliners for sleeping are the Catnapper Owens if you don’t need a lift chair, and the Windermere Burton power lift recliner if that functionality is of critical importance to you.

We do understand, however, that tastes and preferences will differ, and our top pick may not meet your needs as well as some of the other chairs that we compared our winners against. Here then, is a quick summary of why one of the other models in our roundup may be of greater interest to you:

In the Non-Lift Recliner Category:

  • The Catnapper Owens is our top pick, and the best power recliner on the market today.
  • The Simmons Osborn and Cuddler are great alternatives and both appeal to a broader swath of the market. In our view, the Osborn is the best manual recliner on the market today, and the best rocking recliner.
  • The La-Z-Boy Niagara is the best overall value for the money.
  • The Ashley Ludden is a delightfully low-priced name-brand chair and one of the most versatile recliners on the market today.
  • The La-Z-Boy Calvin and the Catnapper Cloud 12 are great name-brand alternatives if none of the others are exactly what you want.
  • And the Flash Furniture, ProLounger, and Lifestyle chairs are tremendously good off-brand choices if you’re not especially brand conscious and are looking for a shorter-term seating solution.

In the Lift Recliner Category:

  • Our top pick is, of course, the Windermere Burton.
  • The Serta Hampton offers the most advanced comfort system of any chair on the list, so if you place a premium on comfort, this one likely moves to the head of the line, even if the Windermere Burton edges it out in other ways.
  • The Catnapper Burns 4847 supports the most user weight of any chair in its class. If you’re bigger and taller, this one almost certainly deserves a closer look.
  • For those that aren’t especially brand conscious and looking for a slightly less expensive option, the UltraComfort has a lot to offer.
  • And for people interested in accessorizing their chairs with companion products designed to work well with their recliners, the Med Lift is a solid product, and the company sells many such accessories, making it an excellent choice.

In addition to that, we also talked about two alternatives that didn’t neatly fit into our main categories:

  • The Flash Furniture Kids Recliner is an excellent, low-cost option if you have a small child with a mobility issue, or who has a condition that makes it difficult to sleep in a regular bed. For that matter, it’s a handsome piece of pint-sized furniture for general use that would make an excellent addition to any home.
  • And finally, the Dorel Living Chair is a manual three-position recliner that offers reasonable comfort paired with a basic vibration-style massage and glorious lumbar heat.

At the end of the day then, the real question is which of these awesome sleeper recliners is the best fit for you?
