Catnapper is one of the most well-respected brands in the American furniture industry today, so it’s no great surprise that the company won top honors here. The Owens Lay Flat recliner is a masterpiece of design and a great-looking chair to boot, but it’s not without its limitations.

Before we get into the specifics, let’s start with the basic statistics that define the model:
As you can see, this is a sizeable piece of furniture, and it doesn’t incorporate Wall Hugger technology into its design, which means you’re going to need a significant amount of space to use it. If you have a smaller home or apartment, that could be problematic.

Recommended For: Anyone weighing 400 pounds or less, who has enough space for it.
Simmons is the oldest furniture company on our list of finalists. Although they didn’t claim top honors in this category, they managed to secure both the #2 and #3 slots, which is no small feat! Let’s start our review of the Simmons Osborn by taking a closer look at the stats that define the model.
Chair Specifications
As you can see, this is a mammoth chair that’s capable of supporting a generous amount of user weight. While we love the size, the simple truth is that it might be too big for some homes.
Wall Hugging
If you’re cramped for space, this chair is going to be a non-starter. That said, this chair does incorporate Wall Hugging technology into its design, so you’ll only need about 6” of space between the back of the chair and whatever wall you put it near.
Power vs Manual Configuration
Assuming space isn’t an issue for you, the Osborn rocker would make a fantastic addition to just about any home. First and foremost, it can pull double duty as both a rocker and a power recliner with an unlimited number of recline positions on offer, thanks to its powerful, quiet motor.
Note that you can, if you prefer, order a manual variant of the Osborn. If you do, you’ll lose out on some of the flexibility. In the place of an infinite number of recline positions, you’ll get a standard three-position recliner.
No Lay Flat Position
Also note that whichever variant you choose, the Osborn doesn’t lay completely flat. Value Pick: Simmons Cuddler
Recommended For: Anyone. This is a great chair for couples who want to cuddle, or bigger, taller folks. An excellent sleeper recliner!
If the Simmons Osborn isn’t a good fit for you, whatever the reason, then the Simmons Cuddler might be a better fit for you. Like its cousin, the Osborn, this is a big piece of furniture, and unfortunately, it doesn’t have the benefit of Wall Hugger technology, so you’ll need even more space to use this one effectively. Check out the basic stats for this chair.

Although it’s somewhat lighter than the Osborn, it supports the same amount of user weight. It’s bigger overall, but the seat width isn’t nearly as wide. Even so, it’s exceptionally roomy, which makes it a great lounging, napping, or sleeping chair. You could even fit two smaller people in it if they snuggled close, thus the name of the model.
Recline Function
As a power recliner, this model offers infinite recline positions. Although it doesn’t lay completely flat, it does come close enough that you’ll have absolutely no difficulty finding a comfortable position to sleep through the night.

We love that, but there’s a catch. It’s actually the same catch we mentioned when we were talking about the Osborn. Check out those dimensions again. There’s no way this chair will fit through your front door fully assembled. You’re going to have to take the back off to get it inside the house and into whatever room you want to place it in.
The good news on that front is that this chair is somewhat lighter than the Osborn. Even so, since White Glove Service is not available, you’ll probably want an assistant on standby when the chair arrives to make things a little easier.
Our Verdict
The chair has incredible production values and is built to last. If you buy one of these, you can count on it delivering years of reliable service. While it’s not quite as versatile as the Osborn, it’s an outstanding second choice if the Osborn proves to be an unworkable choice for you for any reason.

La-Z-Boy is one of the best-known names in the American furniture industry. Not only have they been in the business for a long time, but they’ve got a reputation for excellence that’s reflected both in the quality of their products and in their post-sales service and support.
The Niagara is an excellent example of their work. Let’s start with a review of the chair’s basic stats.
Chair Specifications
This is a fairly sizeable (though surprisingly lightweight), stylish piece of furniture, offered in your choice of Fossil or Platinum-colored fabric. Both are neutral colors, which makes it easy for this attractive chair to blend seamlessly into your home’s existing décor scheme, whatever it might be.
Unfortunately, this model doesn’t incorporate Wall Hugging technology into its design, so you’ll need to be sure you’ve got at least 15” of space between the back of the chair and whatever wall you plan on placing it near.
Based on the stats above, we’d judge this to be a good chair for anyone up to about 6’4” in height, weighing 300 pounds or less, which makes it a good fit for the vast majority of the market.
Recline Function
Understand that this is a standard three-position manual recliner, with its default position, “TV Mode” and “Fully Reclined” mode available. That makes it less flexible than power recliners, which typically offer an infinite number of recline positions, but as long as you’re not too particular, those three positions will work well enough.
One detail worth mentioning though is the fact that you can recline the seat back without engaging the footrest, which makes it somewhat more versatile than a conventional three-position recliner.

You’ll have no difficulty snuggling into this chair and drifting off to sleep.

In addition to being a high-quality, low-priced recliner, it also pulls double duty as a rocker, which makes it a great addition to any home nursery. Even better, this is one of only a handful of recliners on the market today that is built with ergonomic features woven into the mix. Here, you’ll find both lumbar support and well-implemented whole-back support.
Not only does that help make the chair even more comfortable, but it’s also a nice compliment to your home office chair, assuming you have one. The Ashley Ludden is one of the most versatile pieces of furniture on the market today, offered by a company with a history of excellence in the American furniture market. Not only that, but it’s a good-looking chair, offered in four different colors, which makes it easy for this chair to blend in seamlessly with the rest of your home’s décor scheme, no matter what it might be.
Chair Specifications
Before we get into specifics though, here are the basic stats that define this model:
This model isn’t quite big enough to count as a big and tall chair. The relatively lightweight and maximum supported weight values don’t support it, but it’s definitely a delightfully overstuffed chair. Even better, you can get yours in either power or manual configurations, and on a standard or swiveling base. Be aware, however, that if you order the swivel base, it will significantly reduce the amount of weight the chair can support.
Even so, counting the color options, that gives you a dozen different configurations to choose from, which is impressive.
Unfortunately, none of the Ludden options incorporate Wall Hugging technology into their design, so you’ll need to place the chair about 20” from whatever wall you plan on setting it near.

While it doesn’t lay completely flat, that’s good enough for the vast majority of the market, and certainly, enough to get a decent night’s sleep. After all, if you have a condition like sleep apnea or are recovering from a surgery, it may be outright impossible to get a good night’s sleep while lying flat on your back.

On the comfort front, the Ludden features a wonderfully soft pillowed upholstery covering generous amounts of block foam and poly fiberfill, supported by a system of steel springs. While it’s not the most comfortable chair we’ve ever had the pleasure of sitting in, it does offer a spectacularly relaxing seating experience.
It gets better though because this is one of the few recliners on the market today that offers ergonomic supports! Both the lumbar support system and the chair’s whole-back support are expertly implemented, both of which enhance the chair’s comfort.
Our Verdict
So, it’s a rocker, it’s a recliner, it lays mostly flat, and is comfortable enough to get a good night’s sleep in, and you can get yours in a dozen different configurations, counting the Ludden’s color options. That’s pretty spectacular, making it an easy chair to love.
The only real drawbacks are these:
None of those are deal-breakers, however, and this is a superb chair — one of the best reclining chairs for sleeping on the market today.
La-Z-Boy Calvin Recliner Rocker
Recommended For: Anyone who wants a strong and reliable recliner.
This is La-Z-Boy’s second entry on our list of finalists, and the company needs no introduction. As we said earlier, just about everybody living in the United States has at least heard the name. That’s because they have an outstanding reputation in the American furniture market and make great products, the Calvin Rocking Recliner being no exception.

As you can see, this is a surprisingly lightweight chair, but despite that, it’s capable of supporting an impressive amount of user weight. The seat width is a little on the narrow side compared to other recliners on our list of finalists but both overall, the chair is built to appeal to a broad cross-section of the market.
It doesn’t incorporate Wall Hugger technology, but it’s also not an enormous piece of furniture, so unless space is just super cramped at your house, it should be possible to find a permanent home for this model.
Comfort
Comfort-wise, this chair is a delight, being padded with generous amounts of block foam supported by a network of springs. Granted, it’s not next-level comfort, but it is a joy to sit or sleep in. Although the Calvin didn’t score quite as well as the La-Z-Boy Niagara, it is slightly more comfortable, making this the best lazy boy recliner for sleeping on the market today.
Recline Function
As a power recliner, it also offers an infinite number of possible recline positions, though note that there are no presets, so you’ll have to hold the recline button down until the chair is in the position you want it. That’s not a huge issue, as the motor is powerful, quiet, and offers smooth recline action.
When fully reclined, the Calvin won’t lay you completely flat, but it certainly comes close enough that you won’t have any issues getting comfortable and drifting off to sleep. Besides, depending on why you’re in the market for a sleeper recliner, laying perfectly flat may be an impractical way for you to sleep in any case.
We were somewhat disappointed by the fact that this chair doesn’t offer any type of advanced seating option, so no Zero-G or Trendelenburg positions. But, the Calvin makes up for that by providing exceptional lumbar support and very well-implemented whole-back support, making it one of the very few recliners to offer ergonomic features. Kudos to La-Z-Boy on that front!

One of the more common failings of power recliners is the fact that while lift chairs almost always offer a battery backup system, power recliners rarely do. We love Flash Furniture! They’re a smallish brand and much less well-known than the heavy hitters in the industry, but they make regular appearances on our roundup reviews, and the Contemporary Rocker and Recliner is a solid example of their work, well-deserving of a spot on this list.
Chair Specifications
Before we tell you more about it, let’s have a quick look at this model’s basic stats:
The first thing that jumps out at us is the fact that this is a surprisingly big chair. Even more surprising, though, is the fact that despite its impressive dimensions, it’s also very lightweight. Because of that, it doesn’t support a ton of user weight, and the seat width is a bit disappointing, at a scant 17.”
That, unfortunately, limits the chair’s appeal. Assuming you weigh less than 250 pounds though, and that the seat width isn’t an issue for you, you’ll find this chair to be a good option and an excellent addition to almost any home.
We should also add that the chair isn’t as big as it first appears. It’s like a giant fluffy cat. All that fur on the cat makes it look big, but once you start petting it, you find the cat’s really not all that huge after all.
Comfort
In this case, the chair’s size is a bit of an illusion made possible by the presence of generous amounts of padding, which is a combination of conventional block foam and poly fiberfill. Since the padding is present in such abundance and the chair is upholstered in “Softsuede” fabric, it is a delight to sit or sleep in.
Rocking Function
As its name indicates, it’s a rocking recliner, but unfortunately, you can’t rock while reclining. There are a couple of chairs on the market that are capable of this, but the Flash Furniture offering is unfortunately not one of them.
In addition to providing smooth rocking action, it’s also a standard three-position manual recliner, allowing you to sit up straight, partially recline into “TV Mode” (which is also great for napping), or fully recline. When fully reclined, the chair doesn’t lay completely flat, but it comes close enough that you can get a decent night’s sleep in it if you like.

The first thing to note about Dorel Living’s offering is that it’s a combination rocker and recliner, which would make it a great, low cost addition to most any home nursery. The recline function is manual, controlled by a simple lever on the side of the chair.
It comes with the standard three positions you find on most manual recliners, allowing you to sit upright, recline partially, or recline fully. When fully reclined, the chair lays almost flat – not completely, but close enough that you’ll be able to sleep through the night in comfort.
The chair is generously padded, but given its modest price, it relies on block foam for comfort. You won’t find any memory foam, comfort coils, or other advanced comfort systems here. Even so, there’s enough block foam that it does provide a delightful seating, lounging or sleeping space.
It should be pointed out though, that this is a lightly constructed Chinese import. This isn’t the chair you want if you’re looking to buy something that will stand up to the rigors of heavy daily use for years on end.
