Are you a committed Do-It-Yourselfer? Of the opinion that there’s no such thing as too many options?

If you are, and you’re looking for a massage chair that offers you all the customization you could ever want and loads of other great features besides, then you are going to love our comprehensive review of the Cozzia CZ 388.

If you haven’t heard of Cozzia, you’re not alone. The brand isn’t especially well-known, but as you’ll see, this chair, priced in the mid-range, is filled with features and has enough therapeutic benefits to make chronic pain sufferers smile with the prospect of relief—just like most of the other models in our Cozzia massage chair reviews.

In the sections that follow, we’ll outline those features for you in detail and also tell you about its limitations, so you’ve got a complete picture and can make an informed purchasing decision. Let’s get right to it!

Cozzia CZ 388 Massage Chair Features

S-Track Design & Quad Rollers

The 388 has good bones, being built around an S-Track frame, which allows its quad rollers to follow the natural curve of your body’s spine. This is the current industry standard, so it is no surprise that the model has both.

3D Body Scan

Building on the bones of the chair, the 388 also features 3D Body Scanning Technology.

Before your massage begins, the chair will scan you to find your body’s pressure points, making subtle adjustments to the position of the rollers because, let’s face it, if the rollers aren’t hitting the sore spots on your back, you’re going to have a sub-optimal massage. This technology helps make sure that doesn’t happen.

Sometimes, though, the technology gets it wrong. In those cases, the remote also features buttons that allow you to manually tweak the roller position and the width of the massage field to ensure a world-class massage every time you use it.

Zero-Gravity Seating

This is always a popular feature and highly sought after. Inspired by NASA, it enhances the massage experience by reclining you to a position such that your knees are elevated slightly above your heart.

This sees almost all of your body’s weight pressing down against the rollers, which results in a deeper and more penetrating massage—an excellent feature addition. The only quibble we have with the implementation, in this case, is the fact that the 388 only offers a single Zero-G seating position.

That’s not a reason to take a pass on this chair, but it is a bit of a disappointment and one we hope Cozzia will correct in a future model upgrade.

So Many Options It Will Blow Your Mind

In our view, this is where the Cozzia Model CZ 388 really shines. It offers more options and combinations than we’ve ever seen in a chair in its price range. Starting with the techniques, you get:

The presence of two advanced techniques is excellent because even at the mid-range, often you only get one, but it gets better. The 388 offers what it calls “Dual Action Massage,” which allows you to select any two techniques and use them together, vastly expanding the number of combinations all by itself.

That, however, is just the start. The chair also offers several pre-programmed massages, along with some partial massage modes, as outlined below.

Pre-Programmed Massages

  • Gentle
  • Relax
  • Therapy
  • Vigorous
  • Demo

Partial Massage Modes

  • Lower Back
  • Upper Back
  • Neck
  • Lumbar
  • Stretch

If that weren’t enough, the various massage options available could be further modified via the remote through five different intensity and speed levels. The industry standard is three, so even without Dual Massage Mode, this chair would still have more massage combinations than others in its price range.

The end result is more massage options than you’re likely ever to use. You can experiment to your heart’s content. Do-It-Yourselfers rejoice!

Air Massage Mode

In addition to having a massive number of roller-based options available, the 388 also has 50 Second Generation Airbags and delivers an excellent full-body air massage.

If you’d rather not have a full-body massage, you can select from several localized air massage options that focus on specific parts of your body. These are:

  • Neck
  • Hands & Arms
  • Back & Seat
  • Calves
  • Feet

As with the roller-based massage options, the air massage can be customized via the remote through five intensity levels.

Lumbar Heat

Heat is always a welcome addition to any massage chair, and this will probably be the go-to feature for people who suffer from chronic lower back pain. Heat plus massage offers a superior experience and more pain relief.

We have two small quibbles with how this feature was implemented, but in fairness, our two objections are true of most of the massage chairs on the market today.

First, there’s no way to precisely control the temperature. You can turn the heat on or leave it off, but that’s it. Second, more heat is always better. We’d love to see heated leg massage ports in this model.

Seat Vibration

This is a feature that users either love or despise. Those who love it say that it helps improve blood flow and circulation, especially in the hips and thighs, while those who don’t like it say that it feels like the chair is trying to shake their eyes out of their head.

Note that the vibration feature can be added to any of the massage options we’ve covered so far, adding to the already massive number of combinations you can create.

Spot Massage Mode

Another small-but-important feature, Spot Massage Mode, allows you to stop any massage program when the rollers hit a tender spot, enabling them to focus on an area roughly six inches in diameter from where you pressed the button.

A second press of the button returns the chair to the massage program it was running. This allows you to give extra attention to the spots that need it most, which is fantastic.

Body Stretch

Technically, Cozzia lists this as one of its pre-programmed massage options, but we want to discuss it separately because most companies list it as a standalone feature.

Body stretching offers one of the most powerful therapeutic benefits in the massage chair industry, providing the same advantages as chiropractic adjustment. While the airbags in the leg massage ports hold you in place, the chair slowly reclines, relieving pressure on compressed discs, which are the leading cause of chronic back pain.

If you are a chronic pain sufferer, this will almost certainly become your feature and one you’ll look forward to coming home to each day.

Adjustable Timer

As mentioned, all the massage options on offer, roller, and airbag-based, default to a fifteen-minute duration.

One of the 388’s major selling points is vast customization, which extends to the massage timer. You can adjust the length of your massage up or down in five-minute increments, to a minimum of five minutes and a maximum of sixty.

Sixty minutes is, by the way, the maximum length of time you should operate this or any massage chair. Longer than that, you run the risk of a failsafe shutdown to prevent overheating.

Calf and Foot Massage

This is a weakness in a number of Cozzia models, and this one is no exception. There are no rollers in the footwells of the leg massage ports. The entire calf and foot massage is rendered via airbags.

The results are acceptable, but airbags simply don’t do as good a job as rollers do. If you spend several hours a day on your feet, you would probably be better served by a model that offers foot rollers and possibly calf heat. This one will leave you wanting more.

Cozzia CZ 388 Massage Chair Pros & Cons

As you can see, the Cozzia CZ 388 gets a lot right and has a lot to offer to a broad swath of the market. Having said that, there’s always room for improvement. Here are a few things we’d love to see added:

  • Foot Rollers – This seems to be a conscious design decision across multiple Cozzia models, and in our view, it hurts their designs. Rollers simply offer more therapeutic benefits.
  • Calf Heat – This, especially if combined with rollers in the foot well, would add tremendous value to the model and make it a no-brainer for people suffering from chronic leg and foot pain.
  • Multiple Zero-G Seating Positions – This one is a no-brainer and should be an easy addition. At this price range, most massage chairs that feature Zero-G seating offer two and sometimes three positions. This model would be well-served by doing the same.
  • Memory Function – Given the vast number of massage combinations you can create with this model, the lack of a memory function is a real disappointment, especially given how cheap and ubiquitous memory is these days.
  • An Extendable Ottoman – Taller users don’t have a lot of options where massage chairs are concerned, and that’s a real shame. The addition of an extension module would make the chair appealing to a whole new market segment, which would be a big win for everyone. As it stands, the 388 will only accommodate users up to 6’2” in height.

With the possible exception of the extendable ottoman, none of these omissions are deal-breakers, but the model would be stronger overall if they were included in some future updates.

Cozzia CZ 388 Review Conclusion

This is unquestionably a great design. Sure, there are a few shortcomings, as we mentioned in the last section, but even considering those, this is a fantastic massage chair.

To highlight one of the model’s strongest points (the sheer number of massage combinations available), we have to say something about the Cozzia CZ 388 price.

There are just one or two models in the market today that offer more combinations, but they cost twice what the 388 lists for. When you consider that, on top of all the other great features you get, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better value for the money.

We recommend this model to anyone, as long as you’re no taller than 6’2”.
