Do you weigh more than 300 pounds? Do you enjoy camping?
If you answered yes to both of those questions, then you’ve probably run into a fairly common problem. Most camp chairs on the market today are rated to support somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 pounds. That works for most of the market, but if you happen to weigh more than that, you’ve probably noticed that your camp chair options are few.
The good news is that Guide Gear is one of a handful of brands that makes products with heavier people in mind, and their Oversized Club Camp chair is one of the best we’ve ever seen. You’re going to like what you read in this review.
In the following sections, we’ll tell you everything about the Guide Gear Oversized Club Camp chair so you can decide if this is the model you’ve been looking for. We think you’ll still be impressed even if you ultimately decide it isn’t. Let’s take a closer look!
Key Features of the Oversized Folding Club Camp Chair
The Guide Gear Oversized Club Camp chair is big, and it looks inviting as if it’s just begging to be enjoyed. That’s likely the first thought that enters your mind when you see the chair set up and ready to use. The padding is evident, even at first glance, and padding is something that most camp chairs skimp on.
Granted, it’s not as well-padded as your typical living room chair, but that’s not really a fair comparison. When stacked up against other camp chairs, we haven’t found anything else that can compare. In terms of styling, the comparison to a club chair is apt. It looks like a scaled-down, outdoorsy version of the chair in a home office, study, or library.
Actually, sitting in the chair confirms what your eyes tell you. It’s surprisingly comfortable, and if you’re not sitting in it, you can bet someone else in your camping party will be. Even better, it’s offered in three different color choices. You can order one in navy, red plaid, or tan if you want one.
Chair Specifications
Moving on from aesthetics, here are the basic stats of the chair:
As you can see, this is a big chair, but it’s not as heavy as you might think. It collapses nicely and comes with a handy carrying bag, making packing it into your campsite a relatively simple matter.
There’s no locking mechanism to contend with, either. You pull firmly to unfold the Oversized Folding Club Camp chair. Once it is unfolded, the tension in the support struts is more than sufficient to keep it from collapsing back in on itself. When you’re sitting in the chair, your weight makes that an impossibility, so there’s no worry that it will collapse in on you while you’re lounging. It’s a simple, elegant engineering that serves the chair well.
You’ll also find a small storage pocket built into the chair’s right arm as you’re sitting in it. It’s not especially roomy, but there’s space for a water bottle, a few trail snacks, or other sundries.
Adjustability and Comfort
While there’s nothing adjustable about the Oversized Club Camp Chair, as we mentioned, it is big and surprisingly comfy, but there’s a catch. This chair was designed for use in cooler climates. The fabric isn’t breathable, and on a hot summer day, you’re likely to get overheated if you spend extended periods sitting in it.
The fabric is also not waterproof, which is something to be mindful of. If it gets wet, it will take quite a bit to dry the padding out.
There are a couple of easy solutions to counter this. One is, if you expect inclement weather while you’re camping, bring a tarp and cover the chair while it’s raining, or fold it up and put it away till the rain stops.
Another approach would be to treat the fabric with the same stuff people put on oilskin coats to give it moisture protection. Any of those are viable solutions, so it mostly depends on your needs and preferences.
No Assembly Required
While most home furnishings you can buy online come unassembled, most camp chairs will arrive at your door collapsed but otherwise ready to use, and that’s the case with this chair as well. Just take it out of the box, unfold it, and have a seat. That’s all you have to do.
Pros and Cons of Oversized Club Camp Chair
We like the Guide Gear Oversized Club Camp Chair 500-lb. Capacity. It offers tremendous value for the money, much like other Guide Gear products, and is the most comfortable camp chair we’ve come across.
There aren’t any serious negatives to discuss, but three potential negatives to keep in mind are the modest size of the onboard storage, the fact that the fabric isn’t breathable, and the fact that the material doesn’t arrive at your door waterproofed.
Again, though, there are a few easy fixes for the waterproofing issue, and storage is easy to deal with if you don’t mind doing a bit of DIY engineering. Overall, this chair is awesome.
Guide Gear Oversized Club Camp Chair Review Conclusion
We love the Guide Gear Oversized Club Camp Chair and think you will, too. If you buy one, the biggest problem you’re likely to have is that if you get up from the chair to do something else, you’ll probably come back to find someone else sitting in it! This one comes highly recommended.
