Best Massage Chair for Tall and/or Big People

TL;DR Summary

Due to the vast number of solutions for this particular space, we divided our research into five different sub-categories of massage chairs for tall and/or big people: Overall Best, Best Value-Price ratio, Mid-Range price and quality, for the Hobbyist, and Therapeutic.
Below we show you the winners for each category. But make sure to go through the notes, reasoning and conclusions of our research, on the sections that follow.

Are you a tall person? Then you know that finding a great massage chair can be a bit of a challenge.

The unfortunate reality is that if you’re taller, most manufacturers don’t pay a lot of attention to you.

From a practical standpoint, this lack of attention doesn’t significantly impact the back massage, because most massage chairs incorporate body scanning technologies or other means to adjust the rollers. The big hit comes in the area of the leg and foot massage. Without an extendable ottoman, taller users get a sub-par experience here.

In this article, we’re going to take an in-depth look at massage chairs offered by a variety of manufacturers that are geared specifically toward taller users to identify the very best on the market today.

Of course, “best” is a highly subjective term, because what people want varies from one person to the next.

Because of that, we’re going to break down the short list of great massage chairs in a few different ways, using the following categories:

That way, depending on what your specific needs and budget are, you’ve got a different, customized short list to look at.

Having said that, let’s jump right in, starting with:

Amazingly low priced, yet full of popular features, including multi-region heat.

Only one Zero-G seating position. S-Track limits massage area.

No major weaknesses, but we’d love to see a second advanced massage technique added.

Tremendous therapeutic value. Recommended for all therapeutic users.

Great all around chair. Recommended for anyone.

In other words, this chair has something to offer everyone. Granted, if you suffer from severe chronic pain, you may be more interested in a chair that offers some kind of body stretch, but in terms of overall greatness, ease of use, and accessibility, the Pro Regent is the best massage chair designed for tall users that we’ve found to date.

There are other models that came close, and in fact, observant readers will note that we selected the winners of all of our other categories for inclusion in this comparison table, so you’ll find full details about the various runners up in the sections ahead.

There’s not a bad massage chair anywhere in this article, so any of these will serve you well. Mostly, Apex AP Pro Regent comes down to what features you place the most value on, and your answer to that question may cause you to reach a conclusion different from ours.

This roundup review, however, will give you all the information you need to find the perfect massage chair for you, even if you don’t agree with our assessment!

Best Value-Priced Massage Chair for Tall People

Value-priced massage chairs can range in price from under a thousand dollars to somewhere in the two-thousand-dollar range. Even at that cost, these devices represent a significant investment, but of course, you can expect chairs priced at the lower end of the spectrum to be somewhat limited in the number of features they offer.

We’ve culled through the various models produced by different manufacturers to find the best of the best in this bracket. Here’s the short list:

Overall, our winner in this category is the Kahuna LM6800. There are a variety of reasons that this model won top honors in this bracket, but in the end, it comes down to the simple fact that it just offers the best value for the money.

To put that statement into context, we need to look at the other models we considered to see what they offered, and how the LM6800 was able to overcome their advantages.

Let's start then, by taking a closer look at the Cozzia 16028.

Cozzia 16028

The Cozzia 16028 is unquestionably a great chair at its price point, but we regard it as the weakest of the four models here, for one reason. It utilizes an S-Track, where the other three contenders on this list are all built around a Hybrid L/S-Track.

There’s certainly nothing wrong with the S-Track design. It is the current industry standard, after all, and capable of rendering a fantastic massage.

The question, though, becomes, “if you can get a longer Hybrid Track for about the same money, why wouldn’t you?”

Massage Chair for Tall Person Cozzia 16028 Zero G - Chair Institute

The L/S tracks offered by the other models in this category allow the other chairs to give a massage that runs from your neck, down under the seat to your glutes and thighs, where the Cozzia’s rollers stop at about the top of your tailbone.

Even with this limitation, the Cozzia 16028 is still worth a look because it offers some outstanding therapeutic features (most notably body stretching and lumbar heat) into an attractively priced package.

Kahuna SM7300

The Kahuna SM7300 is one of the best massage chair companies in the industry today. There are two things they do better than just about anyone.

The first thing is, nobody caters to the big and tall crowd like Kahuna. They offer more models that accommodate tall users than just about anybody.

Second, they have one of the best, most therapeutic body stretching routines in the industry. Their Yoga stretch is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced and is far superior to the body stretch offered by just about everybody else in the business.

Honestly, it was hard to choose between this model and the one we ultimately gave the top spot to, because the SM7300 has so many great features.

It would be impossible to name just one or two standouts for this model, so we encourage you to have a look at the detailed review, but here are some of the highlights:

Feature Summary

  • Built around a Hybrid L/S-Track
  • Built with space saving technology
  • Zero-G Seating (single position)
  • Tons of options
  • Lumbar Heat
  • An amazing six-roller system

Again, there’s so much to like here that it’s hard to find flaws in the design. One could quibble that multiple Zero-G seating options could be made available, or that MP3 support would be a nice addition, but truthfully, those are minor gripes.

Quad rollers are the current industry standard, and this model is the only one we’ve seen to offer a six-roller array. Typically, such innovations only appear in mid-range or top-end chairs, which makes the SM7300 even more impressive.

Massage Chair for Tall Person Kahuna SM7300 Air Massage - Chair Institute

The only drawback to this SM7300 model is its price. It occupies a strange place in the ecosystem. Some would say it’s too expensive to be considered a value-priced chair, but not quite expensive enough to be regarded as truly a part of the mid-range.

Although SM7300 offers exceptional value for the money, it narrowly missed claiming the top spot in this category, being beaten out by another Kahuna design.

Apex Aurora

Massage Chair for Tall Person Apex Aurora Space Saving - Chair Institute

Our second runner up was the Apex Aurora. It should be noted that these two chairs are quite similar, with the key difference being that where the Cozzia offers lumbar heat + body stretching, the Aurora offers lumbar heat + a Hybrid L/S-Track, which delivers something closer to a full-body massage.

The truth is that these two models are quite similar, so if depending on what features you’re more interested in, you may prefer the Cozzia.

For instance, where the Aurora offers only basic massage techniques, the Cozzia tops it by providing one advanced technique (Shiatsu). On the flip side, the Cozzia only offers a single Zero-G seating position, where the Aurora offers two. They’re both solid contenders, but they’re not quite as good as our first runner up.

Massage Chair for Tall Person Kahuna LM6800 - Chair Institute

Kahuna LM6800 Massage Chair

And that brings us to our top pick in the value-priced category, the LM6800.

This model is about as close to perfect as you’re likely to find in the value-priced segment of the market. It’s designed for home use, being built with space-saving technology, and despite its modest price tag, it doesn’t skimp on features.

Feature Summary

Among other things, you get:

  • Not one, but two Zero-G seating positions.
  • Yoga Body Stretching.
  • A generous number of options, including one advanced massage technique (Shiatsu).
  • An impressive number of airbags (36!).
  • Heat for both your back (lumbar) and calves.

This LM6800 chair is a dream come true for its price, offering tremendous therapeutic value and built to accommodate people up to 6’4”. Truly the best massage chair for a tall person in its price range. You’re going to love it.

Best Mid-Range Massage Chair for Tall Users

Once you step up into the mid-range, you start seeing a lot more features and options in general. Again, we’ve singled out four that really shine brightly. As before, in order to fully understand why we chose one over the rest, we’ll start by looking at our summary table before moving on to the second runner up:

Pros

This chair tied the Inada Dreamwave in our head to head competition, which is widely held as the best massage chair in the world.

Robust feature set, space saving design.

Exceptional design, lots of massage combinations, surprisingly easy to use.

Good feature mix.

Cons

No major weaknesses, but we’d love to see a second advanced massage technique added.

Deep tissue massage may be too intense for casual users.

No major weaknesses, though we’d like to see calf heat and MP3 support in a future upgrade.

Tri-rollers means a slightly inferior roller-based massage.

The Infinity 8100

The Infinity 8100 is an undeniably great chair with a lot to offer, but the reason it winds up in the position it’s in has a lot to do with its roller array.

Quad rollers are the current industry standard, and the Infinity skimps a bit here, only offering Tri-rollers.

In practice, the roller-based massage you get from this chair is slightly inferior than the other models on our short list, but the company has taken great pains to introduce other features, most notably body scanning and Zero-G seating with two positions to choose from that work to minimize the impact of the tri-roller decision.

The Infinity 8100 - Feature Summary

Some of the other great features of the 8100 model includes are:

  • MP3 support
  • A (somewhat) adjustable massage timer
  • Lumbar and Waist heat (therapeutic feature)
  • One advanced massage option (Shiatsu)
Massage Chair for Tall Person Infinity IT 8100 - Chair Institute

The result is a good, solid chair that’s well-priced, but it wasn’t good enough to win our top pick.

The Apex Lotus

Moving up a notch, the Apex Lotus is a powerful massage chair that may be too strong for casual and hobbyist users, which is the main reason it did not earn an even higher position on our short list.

Feature-wise, it offers most of the same benefits as the 8100, but with more of an emphasis on therapeutic benefits, and less on convenience features and extras that hobbyists tend to enjoy more. It’s an exceptional chair at this price range, but we found it to be somewhat narrowly focused.

If you’re looking for a great therapeutic chair priced at the mid-range, this one deserves special attention.

Summary of the Apex Lotus’ Therapeutic Benefits

  • Deep Tissue Massage, augmented by the following technologies.
    • Zero-G seating (two positions)
    • 3D/4D massage roller technology
    • Body Scan Technology
  • Waist Stretch – This is a weak/mild form of body stretching.
  • Negative Oxygen Ionization.
  • Excellent calf and foot massage.
Massage Chair for Tall Person Apex Lotus Front - Chair Institute

As good as these features are, Apex Lotus is still not enough to claim top honors in this category, which brings us to our runner up.

The Fujita SMK82

One of the strongest models in Fujita’s lineup, the SMK82 is fantastic chair priced at the mid-range, and it came close to claiming the top spot, mostly because it offers the strongest air massage of any chair in its price range.

With most chairs, it’s easy to pull out one feature and say “this is the best aspect of the model,” but that’s not possible with the SMK82. There are just too many good things about it.

SMK82’s Stand-Out Features

Massage Chair for Tall Person Fujita SMK82 D Brown - Chair Institute
  • Heat – Most massage chairs that offer heat provide it only in the lumbar region. The SMK82 provides whole back heat, which represents a huge upgrade.
  • Air Massage – Again, those 48 airbags simply deliver a superior experience.
  • Calf and Foot Massage – This is exceptional due, in no small part, to the superior number of airbags, many of which are in the leg massage ports. It is further helped by the presence of rollers at the bottoms of the foot wells.
  • Adjustable Deep Tissue Massage – With six levels of intensity adjustment, this model’s roller-based massage is strong enough to help chronic pain sufferers, but can be dialed back as needed to appeal to hobbyist users.
  • Body stretching – Fujita’s Thai Body Stretch is probably the second best in the industry, behind only Kahuna’s Yoga Stretch.

Put all these features together, and it’s hard to find a reason not to like this chair. Add in the fact that the well-designed remote makes it relatively easy to use, and you’ve got a solid contender by any reckoning.

The few faults we could find with the SMK82 model are all relatively minor (no MP3 support, we’d have preferred to see a memory function on the remote, etc.) are definitely not deal breaking.

Fujita did an outstanding job balancing the needs of therapeutic and casual users. The fact that the massage intensity can be fine-tuned between deep tissue and mild makes it appealing to a broad swath of the market. Despite that, it (narrowly) missed taking the top spot in this category. That honor goes to…

Summary

An exquisitely well-designed model that offers a little something for everyone. The Infinity Iyashi massage chair is recommended for anyone from chronic pain sufferers to hobbyist users, including taller people up to 6’5”.

Massage Chair for Tall Person Infinity Iyashi - Chair Institute

Infinity Iyashi Massage Chair

The first thing you should know about this model is the fact that we recently did a detailed head-to-head comparison between it and the mighty Inada Dreamwave, which is widely regarded as one of the best massage chairs in the world.

Although the Iyashi is a fraction of the Dreamwave’s price, it tied that model for points. We gave the Dreamwave a technical victory, but the reality is that the two chairs are incredibly evenly matched, and that’s a big win for anyone looking for a massage chair with top-end features offered at a mid-range price.

The Infinity Iyashi - Feature Summary

Here are just some of the great things about this model:

Massage Chair for Tall Person Infinity Iyashi BlacknBlack - Chair Institute
  • Hybrid L/S Track – The longest massage track of all the massage chairs on our short list.
  • 3D/4D – Extension arms on the rollers allow for an amazingly deep and penetrating massage.
  • Zero-G Seating (two positions), which further enhance the basic massage experience.
  • Space-Saving Technology – making this an easy model to fit into just about any home.
  • Body Stretching & Waist Twist – This is a fabulous feature combination that provides two different methods of body stretching, one intense, and one mild, so you can pick between them depending on your pain level.
  • Customizable Calf and Foot Massage – Something we haven’t seen offered in many other chairs. This gives you the ability to independently set the roller intensity of the foot rollers, customizing to taste. Even with fewer airbags than Fujita’s offering, this makes the Iyashi’s foot massage comparable, and possibly even superior.

There’s just no way around it. The Infinity Iyashi is the hands-down best mid-range massage chair geared toward tall users. It is an amazing piece of engineering.

Pros

A rare perfect five star rating from us on the basis of its dizzying array of features.

Awesome air massage, surprisingly easy to use.

Amazingly low priced, yet full of popular features.

Solid design, space saving.

Cons

None.

Lack of MP3 support can put some casual users off.

Lack of MP3 support is a downer for some casual users.

Massage can be too intense for some users.

Casual massage chair users have different priorities than people who buy them for therapeutic reasons. There’s obviously a lot of overlap here, but in general, a casual user is more interested in extras, convenience features, and the number of massage options and combinations available.

On the other hand, a therapeutic user is typically more interested in therapeutic features that solve for their particular problem. Here, it’s things like deep tissue massage, and technologies that enhance it, heat, body stretching, and the like.

This is not to say that hobbyist users don’t like these options – they’ll typically embrace as many features as they can get, but it does influence the priority they’re given.

That said, let’s take a look at our Honorable Mention, a chair we’ve seen mentioned before in this report, the Apex Lotus.

The Apex Lotus

While the Lotus lacks MP3 support, which is a popular feature, especially well-loved by casual users, it does come with a number of other bells and whistles casual users like, including:

  • A good number of massage combinations, including two advanced massage techniques.
  • App control for convenience.
  • A space-saving design, making it accessible to even people living in smaller homes or apartments.
  • Air ionization.
  • 4D Roller Tech allowing for a deep tissue massage if one is desired.

As good as it is though, Apex Lotus did not prove robust enough to claim the top spot.

Massage Chair for Tall Person Apex Lotus Beige - Chair Institute

Second Runner Up – The Fujita SMK82

This is another model we’ve seen before, and it makes an appearance here for good reason. Although many of the features it offers has therapeutic value, as we said earlier, there’s often significant overlap between the two groups, and casual users tend to like as many features as they can get their hands on.

Summary of the SMK82’s Features

Some of the things hobbyist users like best includes in SMK82:

  • Zero-G Seating.
  • 4D massage roller technology, allowing for a broad range of massage experiences from mild to deep tissue.
  • An amazing number of total massage combinations, including two advanced techniques (Swedish and Shiatsu).
  • A simply awesome air massage, which translates into a superior calf and foot massage as well.
  • Whole back heat is amazing, whether you have a therapeutic need for it or not.
  • Its relative simplicity and ease of use.
Massage Chair for Tall Person Fujita SMK82 Front Black - Chair Institute

No matter how you slice it, the SMK82 is a good chair with a lot to offer!

Runner Up – The Kahuna LM6800

The Kahuna LM6800 is one of our favorite chairs because it’s offered at such a low price and yet, it has a feature set befitting a much more expensive chair, making it one of the best values in the industry.

Like the much more expensive SMK82, many of its features have therapeutic value, but its low cost and varied capabilities make it extremely attractive to hobbyist users, and it nearly took top honors for that reason alone.

The Kahuna LM6800 - Feature Summary

As a hobbyist user, here’s what you’ll like best about it:

  • Hybrid L/S Track, resulting in something close to a full-body, roller-based massage.
  • Built with Space-Saving Technology.
  • Zero-G seating.
  • A dizzying array of massage options, thanks to the spot/partial massage button.
  • Back heat.
  • Heated foot wells for a luxuriant foot massage experience.
  • Yoga body stretching (arguably the best in the industry).
  • Super easy to use!

Pros

Made in the USA, super easy to use, despite the number of options on offer.

Specifically designed for therapeutic users (Deep Tissue massage).

The best heat system of any chair on the market.

Specifically designed for big and tall users, loaded with convenience as well as therapeutic features. Six-roller system!

Cons

Only one Zero-G seating position.

No intensity adjustment.

No body stretch feature.

Only one Zero-G seating position.

As mentioned above, therapeutic users tend to have a different list of features in mind when looking for the “right” massage chair for them. It’s not that they don’t care about extras like MP3 support and Chromotherapy, it’s just that they’re more interested in features that help make them feel better.

With that in mind, we’ve constructed a short list of top-notch massage chairs designed specifically with tall people who suffer from chronic pain in mind. As we’ve been doing, although our winner in this category is the, we’ll start with the second runner up, so that the reasons for our top pick have context.

Honorable Mention – The Kahuna SM7300

Massage Chair for Tall Person Kahuna SM7300 Black - Chair Institute

The Kahuna SM7300 has a great design, and one of our emotive favorites, because it’s the only massage chair we’ve ever found that is specifically designed with big and tall users in mind. In fact, it’s so specialized that shorter users might have a hard time sitting in it (kind of the opposite problem that tall users have with most of the massage chairs sold today).

As good as it is, however, there are a few other models that simply did a better job at offering therapeutic benefits, which is why this one only gets an honorable mention.

Kahuna SM7300 - Feature Highlights

  • Space-saving design.
  • Six-rollers – even better than the industry standard quad rollers, and something we haven’t seen in ANY other massage chair on the market.
  • Zero-G seating.
  • Yoga Stretch (arguably the best in the industry).
  • Lumbar heat.
  • Triple-technique (rolling, scraping, kneading) foot massage that’s unlike anything you’ve ever felt.

Second Runner Up – The Infinity Escape

Where the Kahuna SM7300 is specifically engineered for big and tall people, the Escape is specifically engineered with chronic pain sufferers in mind. It is definitely not a chair designed for casual use, because there’s no way to adjust massage intensity. It’s deep tissue, all the time.

In addition to that, Infinity Escape offers a raft of great features including:

  • Zero-G seating
  • Body Stretching
  • Therapeutic (Lumbar) Heat
  • A calf and foot massage that utilizes tri-rollers, in the place of the dual rollers that most chairs utilize (well, the ones that have foot rollers, anyway)
Massage Chair for Tall Person Infinity Escape Front - Chair Institute

The reason it didn’t get an even higher rating in our roundup comes down to the fact that there were other chairs that had a more robust set of features. That brings us to the first runner up, which we’ll mention next.

The Omega Montage Pro

While the Omega Montage Pro is an excellent design, the single biggest reason it didn’t claim our top spot was the absence of any advanced massage techniques when in manual mode.

It gives a great basic massage, and offers a wide range of therapeutic and convenience features that includes everything that the lesser chairs bring to the table, plus:

  • MP3 support.
  • An innovative foot massage that utilizes a combination of airbags, dual foot rollers and magnetic therapy.
  • An excellent adjustable timer.
  • The Montage Pro’s standout feature, heat everywhere.

This last feature more than makes up for the lack of advanced massage techniques, but by itself, isn’t quite enough to land this model the top spot. Even so, if the feature you’re most interested in is therapeutic heat, then Montage Pro is the chair you want.

This last feature bears special mentioning for two reasons. First, because it’s something that not many chairs offer at all, and second, because it makes it easy to program your favorite settings, save them, and recall with the touch of a single button. That’s a huge plus given how many massage combinations the Luraco i7 makes available.

If you suffer from chronic pain, and you’re a tall user, then this is the model you want.
