Are you a bigger, taller, heavier user? Do you love enjoying the outdoor spaces your property offers?
If you answered yes to both of those questions, you’ve probably noticed that much of the patio and outdoor furniture available today isn’t big or robust enough to support you.
The good news is that high-weight capacity outdoor furniture does exist, and there are many more options available than you might think. The SCYL Rattan Rocking Recliner is one such option. It’s a great-looking, comfortable chair you’ll be proud to own, but it has one drawback to be aware of that could wind up being a deal-breaker.
In the following sections, we’ll tell you everything this chair offers, and we won’t be shy about discussing its shortcomings and limitations. That way, you’ll have all the information you need to decide if this is the outdoor chair you’ve been looking for. Let’s take a closer look!
Key Features of the SCYL Rattan Rocker Recliner
Before we say anything else, let’s address the one potentially deal-breaking issue upfront. The SCYL Rattan Rocking Recliner is pricey because you can’t buy just one. They’re only sold in pairs. If you only want one, the best option is to split the cost 50/50 with someone, and each gets one chair.
Assuming you want two (or more) and the price doesn’t cramp your budget, there is much to like here. The chairs are stained a deep, rich brown, featuring generous amounts of cream-colored padding on the seat and the seatback.
The neutral colors look great in virtually any setting, and depending on how you decorate the space around them, they can either become an understated focal point or politely fade into the background.
Most people don’t think rattan is not very strong or durable, so they don’t often associate it with big and tall furniture. In this case, it’s not the rattan that provides the bulk of the support, but rather, the tubed steel frame that underlies it.
Chair Specifications
As you’ll see, the combination of materials is delightfully effective when we take a quick look at the core stats that define this model. And these chairs are stronger than you might think. Here are the numbers:
We were pleasantly surprised by this chair’s generous 400-pound weight limit and the seat dimensions, which complement it well. The seat height, however, may be problematic for taller users. The normal big and tall height range starts at 18” and goes to 22” or higher. So, with a seat height of just 15”, this chair is a better fit for people of average height or less who are also a bit heavy.
Not to say that a taller person couldn’t enjoy the chair, especially if they spent most of their time reclining in it, but the relatively low seat may make it more difficult to get into and out of.
Rattan is known for being relatively lightweight, and these chairs don’t disappoint. They’re heavy enough that the first stiff breeze that blows won’t knock them over but light enough that most people will have no particular difficulty picking them up and moving them around as needed. That’s the sweet spot where outdoor furniture is concerned, so kudos to SCYL for hitting it!
Adjustability and Comfort
There’s only one adjustable feature here, which is the recline function itself. The seatback and the footrest recline together, so you cannot engage the footrest without reclining the backrest, as you do with some recliners. That’s not the end of the world, but it is something to be mindful of.
The SCYL Rattan Rocker Recliner’s comfort is driven by three things: the generous (but not excessive) padding, which measures nearly 3” in thickness, the recline function, and the fact that the chair rocks. Combine those three elements, and you get a delightfully comfortable chair.
Granted, these aren’t chairs you’ll want to spend an entire day lounging in – the padding is decent, but it’s not that good—but for a few hours on a leisurely afternoon, they’re pretty close to perfect.
The only real drawback here is that the footrest is not padded. That’s not the end of the world, but if you plan to recline in your bare feet, it’s likely to get uncomfortable quickly.
The padding is high-quality block foam clad in quick-drying waterproof fabric, perfect for outdoor use. Even better, the covers are removable and machine washable, making it simple to keep them looking great.
Assembly is Required
If you decide these are the chairs you’ve been looking for, they’ll arrive in a giant box in pieces. Before you can start rocking your worries away, you’ll need time to put them together.
Fortunately, SCYL did a great job with the assembly instructions. If the written instructions aren’t enough, detailed videos are available online that will make the process smooth and painless. Expect to spend about an hour on both chairs, including unboxing and sorting the parts. Note that the company does not offer an expert assembly option here.
Pros and Cons SCYL Rattan Rocking Recliner
From a technical point of view, there’s nothing wrong with the SCYL Rattan Reclining chairs. They’re well made, they have high production values, and once you’ve got them put together, they’re delightfully comfortable. With proper care, they’ll last you for years.
The only real drawbacks are these:
Neither of these is huge nor deal-breaking, and the strong points these chairs bring to the table overshadow them by a wide margin.
SCYL Rattan Rocking Recliner Review Conclusion
These are very good chairs. While SCYL isn’t exactly an industry Titan, it is a well-respected company that takes customer service and support seriously. If you’re looking for a great-looking, comfortable outdoor rocker and recliner to enhance your enjoyment of your outdoor spaces, the SCYL Rattan Rocking Recliner belongs on your shortlist. We recommend it.
