Does your current office chair leave a lot to be desired? Do you find that you’re stiff and sore after spending several hours at a stretch sitting in it? Are you looking for an alternative that places an emphasis on comfort? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you’re going to be very interested in this review!
Haven’t heard of Secretlab? We’d be surprised if you had. The company doesn’t have a lot of brand heft, and they’re not especially well-known, but by the time you finish reading this review, we think you’ll agree, they certainly know their way around the office furniture market!
Note that the Secretlab Titan Prime is a gaming chair. That’s significant because if there’s one thing that’s true about gamers, it’s that they tend to spend a lot of time playing their favorite titles, which invariably sees them spending a lot of time in their chairs. This chair, the Titan, was designed specifically to accommodate them.
We’ll be quick to say that it’s not a perfect model, and it does have a few shortcomings that you need to be aware of. We’ll cover all of that in the sections below, so you’ve got all the information you need to decide for yourself if this is the model you’ve been looking for. If that sounds good to you, let’s get right to it!
An Overview of the Secretlab Titan Prime Gaming Chair
When you first lay eyes on the Secretlab Titan Prime Gaming Chair, you’re likely to think that it looks like it belongs in a race car. It has a racing style seat and prominent logos on display. While some people are put off by the racing style design, most aren’t, and in truth, it blends in pretty well with most home décor schemes, or at least it would, but for one thing--those logos, they’re in your face.
We get it. We understand that the chair was designed for games, and for that crowd, the logos don’t factor into the equation in a major way. If you’re not a gamer, however, and are looking at this chair to use professionally, the in-your-face logos might be a knock against this model.
In our view, it doesn’t detract horribly from the overall design, but it does make it a bit harder for the Titan Prime to blend seamlessly into a wide range of home décor schemes. It’s certainly not a fatal blow, but as one of the first things you’ll notice about the chair, it’s worth mentioning.
Assuming you’re not put off by that, let’s take a closer look at the model. Specifically, the core stats that define it. Here are the basics:
A couple of things to note about these stats. First, you’ll probably be surprised by how heavy this chair is. While many office chairs are built with polyurethane bases, the Titan uses an aluminum base. Granted, it’s not as durable as some office chairs, like Flash Furniture’s impressive Hercules series, but it’s a nice touch that adds heft to the chair and makes it feel more substantial when you’re sitting in it.
You’ll also note that the height adjustment range marks this as a chair best suited for bigger and taller folk. Typically, the big and tall height adjustment range is 18” to 22,” and this not only starts above that line but extends a bit beyond it, making this chair a good choice for people up to about 6’9”.
Unfortunately, the weight limit isn’t as good a fit for that segment of the market. Three hundred pounds is decent but far from great. You can find plenty of big and tall chairs with weight limits of 400, or even 500 pounds or more, so in that regard, the Titan is a bit underwhelming. Even so, it should serve the vast majority of the market well enough.
Most of the gaming chairs on the market today don’t come with many options, so the Titan is a pleasant surprise on that front. When you place your order, you can select from three different upholstery options: Fabric, PU, or Napa Leather.
Personally, we feel that the fabric option is the best overall, providing a good mix of breathability and durability. But if you love leather upholstered chairs, then the Napa leather option is hands down the one you want.
We don’t recommend the PU leather option. Although it is the least expensive of the lot, it tends to start showing its age rather quickly even if you’re careful with it, and it doesn’t stand up well to the rigors of heavy daily use. In our view, upholstering a chair of this quality with PU is a tragedy.
On top of that, when you place your order, you can select from one of a modest selection of custom logos if you don’t want the default Secretlab/Titan logo. Some of your options include:
Color-wise, you can choose from:
Honestly, we were blown away by the options available on this chair. Kudos to Secretlab for going the extra mile on that front!
There’s more to talk about in this section of our Secretlab Titan Prime review. We’ll start with comfort and then get into the various adjustment features this model brings to the table.
The seat is a waterfall-edge style design which helps improve leg circulation; an important detail for people who plan on spending several hours a day in it. The chair is also generously padded with cold-cured block foam, which is slightly superior to conventional block foam in that it keeps its shape better in the longer term and helps distribute weight more evenly.
That, combined with the overall racing style design, makes you feel like you’re cocooned in comfort while you’re sitting in the chair. We would love to see Secretlab incorporate memory foam into the design, but that would add significantly to the price of the chair, so we understand why they refrained from doing so.
As it stands, the only place you’ll find memory foam is in the bonus headrest pillow that comes with it. That’s a nice touch of course, and the fact that it offers any extras at all is a point in the model’s favor, but yes – in a perfect world, we’d love to see this handsome chair padded with memory foam everywhere!
This is another area where Secretlab really nails it. While there aren’t a huge number of adjustable features on offer, the company hit all the high spots and did a great job implementing them.
The Secretlab Titan PU Leather Gaming Chair reclines to a maximum angle of 150 degrees, which is fantastic, but it does make us wish that there was a pull-out footrest mounted on the bottom or that the chair came with an ottoman.
It’s easy enough to engineer one if you’d like to prop your feet up, but we do regard the absence of some kind of footrest as a missed opportunity.
The chair also features a very well implemented lumbar support system and it too, is adjustable, which allows you to get exactly the lower back support you need, exactly where you need it. While many gaming chairs feature lumbar support, most of them are stationary which limits their value because every body shape is unique and lacking the ability to fine-tune the amount of support you get and its position is a limitation. Fortunately, it’s not a limitation you’ll have to worry about with this model!
Not only are the armrests well-padded and comfortable, making them well-suited for use over extended periods, they’re also both height and sideways adjustable, allowing you to customize them to fit your body perfectly.
A lot of people don’t fully appreciate the value of highly adjustable armrests, but once you’ve sat in a chair that gives you the option, you’ll wonder how you ever got along without them.
Finally, although this isn’t an adjustable feature, it’s worth mentioning that the Titan features oversized casters that work as well on thick carpeting as they do on hardwoods and other flat, smooth flooring surfaces. Although Secretlab isn’t especially well known at the moment, it’s this kind of attention to detail that we feel is going to make them a force to be reckoned with in the years to come.
Does Not Come Assembled
Very few pieces of office furniture being sold today come pre-assembled, so it will probably come as no surprise that when this one arrives at your door, it will show up in a large box and in several pieces. Here, we wish we could give Secretlab high marks, but honestly, their assembly instructions leave a lot to be desired.
They’re not the worst we’ve ever seen, but they’re near the bottom. That’s a pity because the production quality is fairly high and all the pieces fit together well. Had the company taken time to draft clear, concise instructions, this chair would come together fairly quickly, despite its impressive size.
As it stands, you’ll find yourself with a few head-scratching moments, and there are a couple of points during the assembly process that will be generally tough if you’re trying to put the chair together on your own.
Going solo, expect the process to take the better part of an hour from start to finish, and if you enlist the aid of a trusty assistant, you’ll have it wrapped up in thirty minutes or so. Sadly, this is something the company could easily address and at a nominal cost to themselves. We were a little disappointed because it detracts a bit from what is generally a pretty solid design. It’s not a deal breaker by any means, but it is an easily avoided issue. We wish the company had taken the time to do so.
Pros and Cons of Secretlab Titan Prime
On balance, we love the Secretlab Titan Prime PU Leather Stealth Gaming chair! Sure, it’s got a few shortcomings, with the biggest being the in-your-face logo work that might be off-putting to some and the fact that Secretlab doesn’t have a huge amount of brand heft and is relatively unknown.
Neither of those are deal breakers, and if you’re not particularly brand conscious, the latter point won’t give you any pause at all.
Set against these things are the facts that the chair offers:
It’s a delightfully comfortable chair, and as long as you don’t order it with PU upholstery, well-suited to the rigors of heavy daily use.
Secretlab Titan Prime Review Conclusion
People either like racing-style chairs, or they don’t. If you’re not a fan, and if the highly visible logo work bothers you, you’re not going to seriously consider this chair, no matter what other features it might have to offer.
If you like the styling and don’t mind the logos, you’ll find that the Secretlab Titan Prime is easily on par with, and in some ways, superior to most of the office furniture on the market today. If the company had the same kind of brand recognition as the heavy hitters in the office furniture market, this chair would be at or near the top of every roundup review.
It’s clear that Secretlab knows and understands the furniture market, and we can’t wait to see how they grow as a company and as a brand in the years ahead. We absolutely recommend the Titan. A great, well-designed chair.
