Are you in the market for a new recliner? Have you been frustrated by the relative lack of options available to people who weigh more than three hundred pounds or so?
If you answered yes to either or both of those questions, you’re going to love what you read in this review.
While Sunset Trading isn’t one of the biggest or best-known names in the furniture world, they have a long history of making world-class furniture and offering stunning designs. Sunset often builds delightful surprises into their furniture and pays exquisite attention to detail, and the Diamond recliner is an excellent example of their work.
It’s not a perfect recliner, but it has so much to offer that it’s easy to overlook the few shortcomings the chair has. In the sections that follow, we’ll tell you all about this chair, from the good to the bad, so you’ll have all the information you need to decide if this is the recliner you’re looking for, and it may well be! Let’s take a closer look.
An Overview of the Sunset Trading Diamond Recliner
The Sunset Trading Diamond Power Recliner is a one-part recliner and one-part work of art. That’s the first impression the Diamond leaves most people with, and it’s a fair assessment. The chair looks both gorgeous and inviting. Before we go into further detail, though, let’s take a closer look at the core stats that define the model. Here they are:
There are several things to talk about regarding these numbers. First, this isn’t a super heavy chair. And since it comes in pieces when it arrives at your door (which we’ll talk more about in a later section), it’s not impossible to get it into your house by yourself on the day the chair arrives at your door. That’s good because the company doesn’t offer White Glove service, so the delivery folk will bring it up to the door, but it will be on you to get it set up where you want it.
Second, it supports a generous amount of user weight, which makes it useful to a broader swath of the market.
Unfortunately, there are some limitations here. This isn’t an enormous chair, and if you’re close to the maximum supported weight of this chair, the seat may not be wide enough for you. You’ll want to take careful measurements to make sure the chair is a good fit for you before committing to a purchase.
The seat height is good, though, and marks the chair as a model built for taller folk. Having said that, compared to other recliners with comparable weight limits, it’s not as big, which means that even if you have a smaller home or apartment, it should be possible to find a permanent home for it.
Adjustability and Comfort
This is a power recliner that offers an infinite number of recline positions. Where some power recliners offer a simple remote, the controls here are built into the chair itself, right next to the included USB port, which is handy in terms of keeping your phone charged while you’re relaxing in the chair. With an infinite number of recline possibilities on offer, the Diamond is about as adjustable as it gets.
Comfort-wise, there’s a lot to like about the Sunset Trading Diamond Recliner. The seat of the chair features individually wrapped coil springs encased in foam with a generous layer of foam atop these. While it’s not quite on par with memory foam, this is a pretty advanced comfort system that delivers next-level comfort to anyone sitting in the chair.
The diamond stitching in the seat and seatback is more than simple decoration; it also helps with breathability, getting around one of the biggest problems with leather, PU, and leatherette-upholstered furniture, which is not at all breathable.
The seatback is double stuffed and features a web suspension system for additional support and comfort. Combined with the comfort of the seat cushion, the experience is out of this world.
Unfortunately, the upholstery is a bit underwhelming. It’s a hybrid material, part leather, and part PU, which won’t age well or gracefully. It is a bit more durable than standard PU, though, and you can expect that with care, it will hold up for at least two years of heavy use, perhaps up to three if you only use the chair for a few hours a day. After that, you’ll need to think in terms of having the chair reupholstered.
Fortunately, the frame is rock-solid and durable. It will provide you with years of reliable service, so it’s well worth the eventual investment to have the chair reupholstered when the day comes.
Storage & Extras
The only “surprise” this particular model has besides the USB port is the diamond stitching on the seat and in the seatback, which greatly improves the breathability of the chair. Where most leather chairs make you hot and sweaty in short order, you’ll be cool and comfortable sitting in this chair, even for extended periods, and that’s awesome.
Note that Sunset Trading makes a matching loveseat, which is well worth a look (see the company’s brand page, above), which includes a hidden storage compartment and a pair of cupholders.
Minor Assembly Required
As we mentioned, this chair will arrive at your door unassembled. The seatback is not attached to the seat itself, but the assembly process is pure simplicity. Just slide the seatback onto the clips and lock it into position. That’s all there is to it. It will likely take you longer to get the chair out of the box than it will to put it together.
Pros and Cons of Sunset Trading Diamond Power Recliner
We like almost everything about this chair. In our view, its two shortcomings are these:
First, the upholstery is a bit underwhelming. The company makes a deluxe accent chair with much better and more robust upholstery, and we’d love to have seen that adopted here. Sadly, that was not meant to be.
We understand why. Adding deluxe upholstery to this modestly priced chair would have dramatically increased the price, and the company clearly wanted to offer a chair that mere mortals could afford.
Second, for a company known for offering extras and other surprises, we were a little disappointed to only find two offered here. Again, we understand. The more extras on offer, the more expensive the chair, but we were a shade disappointed.
We don’t regard either of these as deal-breakers, and the positive aspects of the chair outweigh them by a wide margin.
Sunset Trading Diamond Power Recliner Review Conclusion
We love the Sunset Trading Diamond Power Recliner. In our view, it’s one of the best high weight capacity recliners on the market today. Assuming the seat width isn’t an issue for you, you’re going to absolutely love it. We highly recommend it.
