Are you a heavier individual, or do you regularly entertain guests who are?

If you answered yes to that question, and you’re in the market for outdoor furniture, then you’ve probably already run into a frustrating problem.

Finding furniture that’s sturdy enough to support more than 300-pounds of user weight can be a real challenge, with most of the larger, well-established companies operating in the market simply ignoring the segment of the market you fall into.

The good news is that since the big brands have opted not to make furniture for heavier people, it created a tremendous opportunity for smaller brands you may not have heard of. Also, they’ve happily stepped up and started offering a variety of furniture specifically designed for heavier people.

Walcut is one of those brands, and their all-wood Chaise Lounger is an excellent example of their work. The WALCUT Garden Patio Chaise Lounger is not perfect, and it’s not going to be for everyone. Still, it might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

In the sections that follow, we’ll tell you everything it has to offer and fill you in on the limitations inherent in the design, so you’ll have all the information you need to decide if it’s the right chair for you. If that sounds good to you, let’s take a closer look.

An Overview of the Walcut Garden Patio Chaise Lounge Chair

The first thing you’ll notice about the WALCUT Garden Patio Chaise lounger is that it’s all wood. That’s rare. Most loungers are a combination of aluminum or steel, wrapped with rattan and covered in some type of water-resistant fabric. Some are pure rattan or similar materials.

The fact that this one is all wood is both a blessing and a curse. If you’re a fan of wooden furniture, you’re going to automatically love it. But as a lounger, you’re also almost certainly going to want to buy some type of pad that will fit it so it’s more comfortable. Lounging for hours at a time on solid wood furniture with nothing beneath you doesn’t make for a comfortable experience, after all.

The wood the chair is made from is hemlock, which is durable and attractive, but really should be regarded as a blank slate. You can paint it, stain it, or cover it with any type of padding you choose, changing the look of the chair dramatically, depending on the choices you make.

Before we go further, let’s take a look at the core stats of the model. Here are the basics:

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 24.02” W x 75.59” L x 11.81” H
  • Chair Weight: 34.17 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 400 pounds

This is not the longest lounger on the market but should be fine for most people. At just over 24” wide, even if you’re quite close to the chair’s maximum supported weight limit, you should have no problems fitting comfortably into the chair, which is a good thing. Of course, we’re quite happy with the maximum supported weight limit itself.

Walcut makes a point of saying that this chair can be collapsed and taken with you, implying that this would make a good beach chair, but we disagree with that assessment. At nearly 35 pounds, unless you live practically on the beach, it’s too heavy to be used in the capacity, in our view. There are plenty of other, lighter loungers that would be a better fit if that’s what you plan to use it for.

On the other hand, it is light enough that if you wanted to pack it away for storage in the offseason or when you’re not using it, it’s easy to do that. It’s also heavy enough that if you decide to leave it out year-round, a stout wind is unlikely to move it around your deck, porch, or patio.

Adjustability and Comfort

You can adjust the seatback of the WALCUT Garden Patio Chaise Lounge chair via your choice of four different recline settings, including a setting that allows you to lay completely flat in the chair if you wish.

As we said in the section above, by itself, the chair isn’t all that comfortable. However, it should be viewed more as a blank slate, allowing you to customize it for comfort to your heart’s content. If you decide to buy one of these, there’s absolutely no reason it should provide you with an uncomfortable seating experience. You can simply keep adding padding until you’re happy with it.

Adjustable back, WALCUT Garden Patio Chaise Lounger

There are two other things to note here. The first is that this is a pretty low chair, sitting less than a foot off the ground. If you suffer from some type of mobility issue, then getting into and out of this lounger may be a bit of a challenge. It should be fine for most people, but it is something that bears thinking about.

Second is the fact that this chair comes with a fun little surprise. There’s a pull-out side table built in that measures 9.84” wide and 12.6” long. It’s not huge but is certainly big enough to accommodate a cold drink, a snack tray, or other miscellaneous items you want to keep with you while you’re enjoying a leisurely afternoon.

We love the built-in table. It’s a small thing, but it absolutely enhances the value of the chair.

Some Assembly is Required

As is the case with most of the furniture you can buy online these days, if you decide you want one of these, it will arrive at your door in a large box and mostly, but not completely assembled.

The production quality is a cut above average, and all the pieces go together pretty much as you’d expect them to, and the assembly instructions are clear. From unboxing to completion, you can expect the process to take about thirty minutes, and you won’t be able to shave that down significantly by adding an extra pair of hands.

Note, however, that this chair is unfinished. If you want to extend its longevity, you’re going to want to sand and stain it, or at the very least, coat it with a couple of coats of polyurethane to help protect it from the elements.

The good news is that the sky’s the limit in terms of what this chair ultimately looks like. You can paint or stain it any color you please. The downside is that taking the time to do so will add a few days on the clock in terms of actually being able to use it for the first time. It’s by no means a deal-breaker, but it’s certainly something to be mindful of.

Also note that this chair does not come with an expert assembly option, so you’re going to have to put it together yourself or convince a friend to lend you a hand.

Pros and Cons of Walcut Garden Patio Chaise Lounge Chair

In our view, here are the things we think you’ll like best about the Walcut Chaise Lounger:

  • It’s delightfully low priced for a solid wood piece of furniture.
  • It’s essentially a blank slate, allowing you to paint or stain it any color you wish, and add as much padding as you desire.
  • It comes with a handy little pull-out table that adds to its versatility.

On the flip side:

  • It’s unfinished wood, so if you want it to last, you’ll have to take steps to protect it, even if you opt to leave it in its natural state.
  • You’re just getting the chair itself, so if you want to add padding, you’ll have to buy that separately.
  • Since it’s unfinished, getting this chair ready for first use is a more time-consuming process than you’ll face with most other chairs. If you want to stain it, then you’ll want to do that before putting it together. And since you typically have to let the stain coat dry overnight, you’re looking at a 2-3 day process before you can even think about actually putting it together.

All that to say, if you’re looking for something you can take out of the box and use immediately, this isn’t the chair you want.

WALCUT Garden Patio Chaise Lounger Review Conclusion

We love wood furniture, and we really like this lounger, but we readily admit that it won’t be for everyone. In our view, the ideal buyer for the WALCUT Garden Patio Chaise Lounger is someone who:

  • Weighs between 300 and 400-pounds
  • Loves wood furniture
  • Doesn’t need a lounger that they can use immediately, which will give you plenty of time to stain or paint it to properly protect it before you put it into service.

If all three of those apply to you, then we recommend this chair. If only one or two apply, we provisionally recommend it.
