Are you a gamer? Is your current gaming chair leaving you feeling a bit underwhelmed? Are you looking for something comfortable and versatile that won’t break the bank?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, or if you consider yourself a hipster home worker looking for a home office chair with unconventional styling, then you’re going to be intrigued by this Furmax Gaming Chair review.

Furmax is one of the legions of small, off brands selling furniture in this part of the market. Their chairs are made in China and imported here for sale, so the production quality tends to be a bit on the low side. These chairs aren’t built to last over the long term, but their key advantage is the fact that you can get them for a song.

We’ll be quick to admit that the Furmax chair isn’t perfect and it won’t be for everyone, but for a value-priced gaming chair, it hits most of the right notes and it managed to impress us on a couple of different fronts.

In the sections that follow, we’ll tell you about the chair in detail so you can decide for yourself if this belongs in your bedroom, gaming room, or home office. Let’s jump right in and see what this racy little chair can do!

Overview of the Furmax Gaming Office Chair

Not your typical office chair. That’s the first thing you’ll likely find yourself thinking when you see the Furmax for the first time. It’s got a bold, racing style design with curved armrests and a bucket seat that has an edgy appearance due to the two-color design. If you decide to order one, you can get yours in eye-popping blue and black, or more subdued black and white.

While the overall design of the chair is quite handsome in our view, the bold color scheme might be off-putting to people who want a chair that blends seamlessly into pretty much any environment you put it into. This isn’t that chair. It stands out. It demands to be noticed. If you like that, you’ll be drawn to it immediately.

Chair Specifications

Before we talk about the specific features this model brings to the table, let’s begin our Furmax Gaming Chair review with a quick rundown of the basic stats that define it.

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 33.1” x 26” x 26.9”
  • Chair Weight: 51.8 pounds
  • Maximum Supported Weight: 310 pounds
  • Seat Width: 20.9”
  • Seat Depth: 19.7”
  • Seat to Floor Height Adjustment Range: 15” to 18.7”

So, the first thing that jumps out at us is the fact that this is a super versatile chair. At its lowest seat height setting, it’s a good fit for shorter people, and it manages to touch the low end of the big and tall seat height range, which typically starts at 18” and extends to 22” or higher.

The weight limit doesn’t support the idea of this model as a big and tall chair, but given the height adjustment range, it’s a great fit for all but the extreme ends of the market. Big and Tall folk and super short people will need to look for some other option, but pretty much everybody else will find it to be a good fit.

Adjustability

This Furmax Gaming Office chair takes a very simplistic approach to ergonomic features. It uses pillows to provide ergonomic lumbar and head/neck support. As such, both are adjustable since you can simply move the pillows around where you want them.

On the whole, this is a decent approach, but we find the lumbar support to be better than the head and neck support. Still, it’s a simple, effective way to implement both features and although it’s not as good as a proper lumbar support band, it’s not bad, either.

Although the armrests aren’t ergonomically designed, they are independently height adjustable, which gives you some means of tweaking and personalizing your seating experience.

The standout feature in this design, though is the footrest, and the fact that the chair lays completely flat. It can serve as a decent recliner in a pinch, which is great for those marathon working or gaming sessions when you need to take a bit of a break, and the footrest is well-padded and comfortable although if you’re at the upper end of the chair’s maximum supported weight limit, it might feel a bit flimsy to you.

Comfort

Comfort-wise, the Furmax Gaming Chair with footrest is good but falls well short of greatness. It utilizes conventional block foam with PU stretched over it.

We don’t really have an issue with block foam, although since this is a gaming chair, we feel that it could use a bit more in the way of padding. After all, gamers are famous for spending extended periods of time in their chairs playing their favorite games, and there’s no such thing as too much padding!

Of course, it would have been even better if the company had opted for an advanced comfort material like memory foam, but doing so would have dramatically increased the price, so we understand why it wasn’t considered.

PU Upholstery

The real problem with the chair in terms of comfort is the upholstery. It’s PU, which means it’s not at all breathable. Given that the chair was designed for gamers, and given that die-hard gamers spend hours on end in their chairs, this is a poor fit.

In addition to the fact that spending lots of time in this chair will make you sweat, PU isn’t known for its durability, so if you’re a power gamer, using the chair for several hours a day, you can expect that the upholstery will start peeling and cracking after about a year of heavy daily use. If you’re super careful with it, you might be able to coax two years out of it, but it’s just not going to hold up much beyond that, no matter how careful you are.

That’s not necessarily a deal-breaker. The Furmax Ergonomic Racing chair is built with lower quality materials, so two years of life is about as much as you can reasonably expect from it in any case. After that, given its low price, it’s easy enough to just dispose of it and buy another one.

Assembly Can Be a Challenge

Most people intuitively understand how a conventional office chair goes together. You’ve got the base, you’ve got the seat, you’ve got arms and a seatback. It’s all pretty straightforward.

Here though, the brightly colored upholstery and the addition of the footrest and the mechanics that support it do complicate the issue somewhat. Add to that the fact that this is a sizeable piece of furniture, and putting it together can be a daunting task if you’re doing it solo.

The instructions are reasonably good, but the production quality is a little on the low side, so you may find a few instances where things don’t align quite as precisely as they should, resulting in the need to force them together.

If you’re putting the Furmax Gaming Chair High Back Racing Chair together by yourself, expect it to take 30 to 45 minutes. You can cut that down to 25-30 minutes if you have an assistant on standby the day the chair arrives.

The good news here is that if you don’t want to be bothered with the assembly process at all, you do have the option of paying extra for “expert assembly” which is essentially White Glove service for the chair. Granted, the cost for that service will add more than 50% to the total cost of the chair, but if you really don’t want to mess with having to put it together, you may find it worth the extra expense.

Pros and Cons of the Furmax Gaming Office Chair

This is really a self-selecting chair. If you’re looking for a gaming chair, then this one has all the basic features you’ll want, offered at a super attractive price. If you’re looking for an office chair, the aesthetic and bold color scheme will either put you off, and you won’t seriously consider this model, or it will speak to you, and you’ll naturally gravitate toward it.

Feature-wise, we only have one complaint. The upholstery.

This chair would be far better served with fabric upholstery. Here’s why: Gamers tend to spend a lot of time in their chairs. They’re the ultimate power users. Unfortunately, PU upholstery isn’t breathable, so the longer you sit in the chair, the more you’re going to sweat. It’s just not a great upholstery option for a chair designed for heavy daily use, and if you do use it for several hours at a stretch, every day, the upholstery is going to start breaking down after about a year.

Of course, the flip side to that is that the chair is really inexpensive. When that inevitably happens, it’s easy enough just to toss it and get another one. Given the lower quality materials used in its construction, we wouldn’t recommend taking the time and expense to have it reupholstered. The frame simply isn’t durable enough to stand up to years of continuous either, though it will outlast the upholstery.

Feature-wise though, it’s excellent and stacks up well against others in its price range, handily beating a fair number of them. Anything we could recommend to improve it, like a more ruggedized frame or higher quality materials used in its construction would have the effect of increasing its price and taking it out of the value segment of the market.

Given that, we can’t say we’d change anything beyond swapping out the PU upholstery for durable fabric, though we would love to see an all-black model, which would, in our view, make the chair more attractive to professionals who work from home and are looking for an edgy, stylish office chair, but who find the bold colors to be off-putting.

Furmax Gaming Chair Review Conclusion

You’re either going to be drawn to the aesthetic of this model, or you aren’t. If it appeals to you and assuming the chair’s measurements are a good fit for your own, this is a great budget-priced gaming chair that will serve you well for about a year before you need to replace it.

We’d say here in our Furmax Gaming Chair review that if the aesthetic doesn’t do anything for you, you’ll almost certainly give this chair a pass without a second thought. On that basis, we provisionally recommend it.
