We arbitrarily decided to use 400 pounds as our minimum standard. The more supported weight, the better, but 400 pounds was the absolute minimum we were looking for even to be considered.

Our Pick: CAF Amish Heavy Duty Mission Porch Glider

There’s so much to like about this piece of furniture that it’s hard even to know where to begin. We’ll start then by doing a quick review of the core stats that define this model. Here they are:

If you decide you have to have one, you’ll be pleased to know that you can get it in either a four-foot or five-foot length. We find the five-foot variant to be the more useful and versatile of the two. But your opinion on that may vary if you’re cramped for space.

Comfort-wise, it’s about what you’d expect from solid wood furniture. The good news is that if you want to, you can incredibly easily enhance the seat’s comfort by adding a seat and seatback pad of whatever thickness you desire.

There’s a tradeoff involved with that, though. Adding a seat pad will hide the wood’s natural beauty.

It mostly depends on how you plan to use the bench. If you intend for it to serve as occasional seating for relatively short periods, you probably won’t need additional padding. However, if you want your guests to be able to rock the afternoon away, adding a seat pad becomes an increasingly attractive option.

Overall, this is one of the best high-weight capacity pieces of furniture on the market today. We love just about everything about it. The only potential flies in the ointment are these:

First, it’s a bit on the expensive side, and if you’re on a budget, it may be out of reach, or you may have to spend some time saving up for it before you can get one.

Second, the pre-stained versions are a bit underwhelming in our view. They’ll be fine for a few years, but you must sand and re-stain when the finish starts to age. However, it gives you a means of quickly putting your new bench glider into service.

Like our top pick, it’s made right here in the USA by Amish craftsmen, though this chair is made from cedar wood rather than pressure-treated pine. It’s a gorgeous, well-made piece of furniture, but before we say more, let’s take a moment to do a quick stats review:

This is a worthy substitute if you want the bench glider but don’t have space. However, you won’t be able to fit more than one person on it, and it doesn’t support nearly the weight that our top pick does.

The seat is comfortably wide, but if you weigh anywhere close to the chair’s maximum supported weight limit, you’ll want to take a quick measurement to be sure that you and the chair will fit well together. Also, note that the seat height is only 15”, which is well below the big and tall range (which typically starts at 18” and goes up). It may not be a deal-breaker, but you’ll want to keep it in mind if you’re taller.

Also note that the production quality is very high, and the instructions are clear, which makes the process quick and painless and should take you no more than 45 minutes, counting the time you’ll spend getting the pieces out of the box and organizing everything.

This is almost certainly why the company doesn’t offer this product with an expert assembly option. It’s easy enough that it’s simply unnecessary, even if you’re somewhat averse to putting your furniture together.

This chair looks great, comes with a coating of Silicone Magic, which helps to protect it from the sun’s rays and the elements, and is just plain fun to sit in. Our third-place entry is a departure from the world of gliders. Adirondack chairs are incredibly popular, but they’re not for everyone. Before we talk further about that, and if or whether this is a good option for you, let’s continue as we have been by taking a quick look at the stats to get us started:

Several things jump out at us here. First, we love the weight limit. At five hundred pounds, this chair offers the second-highest supported weight limit of everything we evaluated for this review.

Unfortunately, check out the seat width. It’s a smidgeon over 19”, so if you’re even close to the chair’s maximum supported weight limit, you’ll need to take measurements and think long and hard about whether this is the right chair for you. If you fit at all, you may feel a bit cramped.

In addition to that, the seat height is super low, so if you have any mobility issues, getting into and out of this chair might be a bit of a challenge. That’s true of all Adirondack chairs and not unique to this model in particular, and this is the reason why Adirondack chairs are seen as a niche product.

The stats above also reveal that if you decide you want one of these, you’re not just getting a chair but a matching ottoman, which is a bit of a rarity. Most Adirondack chairs don’t come with one, and we think it’s a nice touch, although it does add significantly to the price of the chair.

In addition to that, since these chairs aren’t made of wood, there’s no downside to adding a seat or seatback pad, which means you can make the chair as comfortable as you’d like it to be. These are attractive chairs, but nobody will mistake them for solid wood furniture.

Even better, although these chairs aren’t assembled, there’s little work to prepare them for first use. It will likely take you longer to get the pieces out of the box than to complete the assembly, making this option close to instant gratification.

Our fourth-place entrant surprised us because we’re not huge fans of wicker furniture, and Luckyermore is a tiny brand that almost no one has heard of. While reviewing dining room chairs, we discovered the brand and came across a real hidden gem.

While this chair isn’t as impressive as the company’s dining chair, it’s still a surprisingly good option. Let’s take a moment to do a quick stats review.

Luckyermore tries hard to create a chair accessible to just about everybody, and with one exception, they more or less succeed. The seat height is only an inch shy of the big and tall range, so even if you’re taller, it should still work for you. Of course, it supports a generous amount of user weight.

Unfortunately, check out the seat width. At under 18”, if you’re anywhere close to the chair’s maximum supported weight limit, you’re almost certainly not going to fit comfortably into this chair. It’s worth taking a quick measurement of yourself, but that narrow seat will be a deal-breaker for some folks. There’s just no way around it.

Also note that since the chair is wicker, it’s incredibly light. If you plan on keeping it outside, you’ll want to ensure it’s in a relatively sheltered area because a strong gust of wind can knock it over.

It’s much more at home on a screened porch or in a sunroom, but it can work outdoors if you need it, too. You’ll probably want to pack it away in your garage or somewhere similar until you need it. Even better, these chairs were designed to stack with each other, so if you order more than one and want to store them when you’re not using them, that’s an easy thing to do.

Unlike the chairs we’ve discussed, the Luckyermore comes with its seat pad. It’s not luxurious, being only an inch and a half thick, but it’s certainly comfortable enough for occasional seating, which is what the chair was designed for.

One thing you’ll be pleasantly surprised at, though, is this: while the seatback isn’t padded in any way, it is ergonomically sculpted and provides decent support for your back. The implementation isn’t world-class, but it’s better than we had any expectation that it would be. We were honestly impressed. You cannot often use the phrases “wicker chair” and “good for your back” in the same sentence, but in this case, it’s accurate.

If you want one, you can order yours in one of two configurations: black with white cushions or white with black cushions. Both are good choices, and you shouldn’t have much trouble getting this chair to blend in with your existing outdoor décor scheme, whatever it might be.

If you decide you want one (or several), you’ll also be pleased to know that this is one of the relatively few pieces of furniture you can buy online that doesn’t require any assembly. When this chair arrives at your door, you’ll have to take it out of the box, put the seat cushion in place, decide where you want it, and have a seat. They’re delightfully inexpensive, too, so buying one isn’t likely to pinch your budget.

Overall, these are great little chairs and of surprisingly high quality. The narrow seat width will likely be a deal-breaker for a significant segment of the market this chair is targeting. Because of that, we can only give it a provisional recommendation.

Like Luckyermore, Walcut is a brand most people won’t have heard of. Also, like Luckyermore, this is the second time Walcut has found its way into one of our roundup reviews. They also made the cut for their surprisingly good solid wood lounger. They’re back again with a matched pair of Adirondack chairs.

As we mentioned earlier in this review, we consider this type of chair a niche product when looking at the Highwood Adirondack. They’re popular with certain segments of the outdoor furniture market. They’re surprisingly comfortable, but they also sit quite low to the ground, so heavier people, especially those suffering from mobility issues, sometimes have difficulty getting into and out of them.

If that’s not a deal-breaker, you’ll find much to like here. Let’s begin as we’ve been doing by taking time to do a quick review of basic stats:

Some of these numbers are problematic, given the segment of the market Walcut is targeting here. We’ve already mentioned that Adirondack chairs tend to be fairly low to the ground, and sure enough, the numbers bear that out.

While the seat is wider than the one found on Luckyermore’s offering, it’s still not generous. If you weigh close to the upper limit of this chair’s maximum supported weight, you’ll want to measure to be sure you’ll fit comfortably into it.

The chair is relatively lightweight, which may make it prone to being blown over by strong winds. However, it is also collapsible, making it easy to fold and store it in your garage or somewhere until and unless you need it.

At first glance, you might balk at the price, but it’s important to remember that you’re not getting a single chair here; you’re getting two, so the average price per chair is quite modest. If you don’t need two of these, you can find someone interested in one and split the cost, or just bite the bullet and have an extra chair.

While these chairs are all wood, they also come pre-painted in a color the manufacturer describes as “Natural Ramin.” It’s not an especially attractive color, but it is neutral, so blending a set of these with whatever outdoor décor scheme you’ve developed should not be difficult. Even better, you’re not risking or losing anything by adding a seat and/or seatback pad since the color is a little on the drab site.

As with most of the products we’ve discussed thus far, if you get a set of these, you’ll have to put them together when they arrive at your door. Walcut’s production quality is pretty good, but a step or two down from our top picks. The pieces go together fairly well, and the instructions are clear enough to make the process painless.

Expect to spend the better part of an hour putting both chairs together. If you hate putting your furniture together, you can order the expert assembly service, which is entirely hands-free.

We don’t recommend the expert assembly option because a big part of the attraction of these chairs is the surprisingly modest price, and expert assembly is expensive, which blunts the value proposition these chairs offer. But if you need it, you need it, and that’s that.

Overall, we regard these as good but not great chairs. They support a generous amount of user weight and are pretty much a blank slate to which you can add flair by incorporating a seat and seatback pad for a dash of color.

Unfortunately, the fact that their Adirondack chairs and the seats are somewhat narrow will make this an unsuitable choice for some users, so we can only give these a provisional recommendation. Still, for the right user, and especially for someone on a budget and looking to get the most outdoor seating bang for their buck, this is a solid option to consider.

FlowerHouse Hanging Sports Lounge Chair

Another niche product snagged our sixth-place slot, but it’s too interesting not to give a shout-out.

FlowerHouse is another tiny brand that you probably haven’t heard of. They import a wide range of products from China for resale here, including dabbling a bit in the furniture market. They offer three different variants of their hanging sports lounger. One is in the shape of a football, another is like a basketball, and a third is like a soccer ball, making these chairs perfect for sports lovers.

Continuing with the convention we’ve established in this review, here are the basic stats that define these chairs:

As you can see, many normal measurements are simply missing here. That’s because, as hanging loungers, the seat wraps around you when you settle into it. It’s as wide and deep as you need it to be, in much the same way as a hammock.

Also, note that these are by no means lightweight chairs. They weigh in at close to a hundred pounds, and almost all of that weight is tied up in the large tubed steel frame upon which the chair hangs. This frame sports rubberized caps on the “feet,” which means that you could, in theory, use these indoors without scuffing up your flooring, but honestly, there are only a few places they’d fit in well.
